Short answer: a Mac mini is the more conventional general-purpose desktop, while Raspberry Pi 5 is a smaller, hands-on computer with specific power-supply and boot-media requirements. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish that its computer will reliably run an unattended 24/7 YouTube playlist stream. Choose based on your actual playback and encoding workflow, software compatibility, existing hardware, and a measured test—not processor or power-supply figures alone.
What matters for a 24/7 playlist stream
The computer is only one part of the setup. A continuous stream also depends on compatible playback or streaming software, sufficient upload capacity, stable power and networking, playlist and storage behavior, and a way to recover if the application, computer, or YouTube connection stops. YouTube’s current requirements for an unattended continuous stream, eligibility, looping, and archives have not been established here; check current YouTube Help before relying on a setup.
First determine whether your workflow needs to encode video in real time or can transmit a pre-encoded loop. Then verify that the specific operating system, application, and encoder path support that workflow. A listed video decoder or media engine is not proof that a particular OBS or FFmpeg configuration can stream it successfully.
Mac mini vs Raspberry Pi 5
| Factor | Mac mini | Raspberry Pi 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware listed by the manufacturer | Apple lists current Apple-silicon configurations and hardware media engines. See Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications. | Raspberry Pi Ltd’s April 2026 product brief lists a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor, RAM configurations from 1 GB to 16 GB, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. See the Raspberry Pi 5 product brief. |
| Networking | Apple lists Ethernet; its current specifications show 2.5Gb Ethernet and configurable faster networking for relevant configurations. | Raspberry Pi lists Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. |
| Power figures | Apple lists a 155 W maximum continuous-power rating. This is not a measurement of typical draw while streaming. | Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. Raspberry Pi introductory material describes peak use around 12 W in demanding cases; neither figure is a comparable 24/7 stream measurement. |
| Setup implications | A conventional desktop with internal storage and built-in ports. Exact configurations and included accessories vary. | Allow for an appropriate power supply and OS boot media; a case and cooling depend on the build. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation explains that an OS image must be written to boot media before starting. |
| Streaming-software certainty | Compatibility and long-duration reliability for your exact streaming workflow are not established by the hardware specifications. | Current OBS support on Raspberry Pi OS/ARM and the relevant hardware-encoding workflow are not established by the hardware specifications. |
Which one fits your situation?
Choose a Mac mini if you want a conventional desktop
The Mac mini is the more natural starting point if you want a general-purpose desktop platform and are prepared to justify its acquisition cost for your needs. Apple’s listed media engines and networking options describe hardware features, not the performance or reliability of your chosen livestream setup. Confirm support for your exact application and stream settings, then test the full workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Raspberry Pi 5 if you want a small, hands-on build
Pi 5 is a more involved small-computer route for someone comfortable with OS imaging, setup, and troubleshooting—and only after verifying that the intended software and encoder workflow are compatible. Its 4Kp60 HEVC decoder is a decoding specification; it does not establish real-time encoding capacity for a YouTube stream.
Plan for a compatible 27 W USB-C supply and microSD boot media. Do not select a card capacity based on a generic recommendation: the right size depends on whether playlist files are stored locally, their total size, logs, and the rest of the software setup. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s April 2026 product brief says, “Raspberry Pi 5 will remain in production until at least January 2036.” That availability statement does not establish livestream compatibility or reliability.

How to decide without guessing about reliability or cost
- Write down the workflow. Specify whether the video is pre-encoded or needs real-time encoding, where playlist files live, and which streaming application and operating system you plan to use.
- Check software support. Verify that the exact application and encoder path support your chosen computer, OS, input format, and output settings. Do not infer OBS or FFmpeg capability from processor, decoder, or media-engine specifications.
- Check the connection. Confirm that your internet service and router can sustain the stream’s upload rate. Ethernet options on the computer do not guarantee sufficient or stable internet service.
- Run a long-duration test. Test the whole playlist and stream behavior under the settings you intend to use. Check for application crashes, playback gaps, storage exhaustion, overheating or power issues, and what happens after a network interruption or restart. A short successful test is not proof of unattended reliability.
- Measure power at the wall. Compare both candidates under the same intended workload using a suitable power meter. Include the power supply and attached storage, then use your local electricity rate and the measured draw to estimate ongoing cost. Apple’s maximum rating and Raspberry Pi’s PSU recommendation are not like-for-like consumption measurements.
- Compare complete costs and recovery effort. Use actual regional purchase prices for the configurations and accessories you need. Include your time for setup, monitoring, and recovery; no comparable purchase-cost or stream-load energy figures are established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube playlist live rather than maintain another computer, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI works; cards are available in India and worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
