Install the 7 Days to Die-specific uMod/Oxide build that matches your server’s operating system and game build, copy its files over the existing dedicated-server installation, then restart and run oxide.version. Once the framework responds, place unchanged .cs plugin files in oxide/plugins (or umod/plugins on installations that use that name). This guide covers local, remote and hosted-panel installations, verification, plugin loading and update recovery.

What Oxide (uMod) does on a 7 Days to Die server
Oxide, distributed through the uMod project, is the server-side framework that allows supported 7 Days to Die plugins to load and run. It is installed into the dedicated server’s existing files; it is not a separate game client and players do not install it on their own computers.

The framework and plugins are version-sensitive. A package intended for a different game build, operating system or server installation can fail silently or produce startup errors. Treat every game update as a compatibility check: revisit the official uMod 7 Days to Die page, select the current build for Windows or Linux, replace the framework files, and test both the framework and your plugins.
Before you install
Confirm that you have a dedicated server
You need an existing 7 Days to Die dedicated-server installation with access to its files and console. A single-player or locally hosted game session is not the same installation target. If the server is remote, access normally comes through FTP, SFTP or the host’s file manager; the exact method depends on the provider.

Stop the server and make a backup
Stop the dedicated server before replacing framework files. Back up the complete server directory and your save data first. A backup gives you a rollback point if the selected build is incompatible or a replacement overwrites a file you still need.
Record the operating system and current game build
Identify whether the server runs Windows or Linux and note the current 7 Days to Die build shown by your server installation or host panel. uMod publishes separate downloads and guidance for these environments. Do not assume that a Windows package will work on Linux, or that an older framework package remains compatible after a game update.
Choose the correct uMod/Oxide package
Open uMod’s official 7 Days to Die page and select the build that matches both the server operating system and the current game build. The page lists version information, game-build notes and Linux-specific guidance. The uMod getting-started documentation’s central rule is: “Download the version specific to your game.”
- Windows server: choose the Windows build.
- Linux server: choose the Linux build and follow the Linux-specific instructions.
- Recently updated game: check the page again rather than reusing an older framework archive.
- Uncertain build: verify the game version in the server console or control panel before downloading.
Download the archive locally so you can inspect it and keep a copy with your backup. Do not mix files from different operating-system packages or different game-build releases.
Install uMod on a self-hosted or directly managed server
1. Stop the dedicated server
Use the normal stop command or service control for your installation and wait until the process has fully exited. Replacing files while the server is still running can leave a partial installation or cause changes to be lost when the process closes.

2. Locate the existing server directory
Find the directory that already contains the 7 Days to Die dedicated-server files. This is the directory that your startup script, service or launcher uses—not merely a downloads folder and not the directory containing the game client. On a remote machine, open the same location through FTP, SFTP or the provider’s file manager.

Extract the downloaded uMod/Oxide archive and copy its contents into the existing dedicated-server directory. Allow files and folders to merge with the server installation. Do not create an extra nested directory such as a second server folder inside the real one; the framework files must sit alongside the existing server files that the startup process reads.
Keep the original backup until you have completed a successful startup and plugin test. If your file-transfer tool asks whether to overwrite matching files, use the package intended for your exact operating system and game build, then allow the framework files to replace their older counterparts.
4. Start the server
Start the server with the same script, service or panel action you normally use. Watch the console during startup. A successful framework installation should make the uMod/Oxide console commands available; startup warnings or file-not-found errors indicate that the files may be in the wrong directory or that the package does not match the server.
5. Verify with oxide.version
Run the following command in the server console or, where your permissions allow it, in server chat:

oxide.versionThe command is the documented uMod check for an installed Oxide framework. Record the version it reports. If the command returns no response, repeat the directory and operating-system checks before attempting to install plugins.
Installing uMod on a hosted server panel
Many managed 7 Days to Die hosts expose an installation button for uMod/Oxide. In that case, stop the server if the panel requests it, choose the uMod or Oxide option, and allow the panel to apply the files. Control-panel labels and menus vary, so the button may appear under an installer, mod manager, extensions page or server-software selector.
A one-click installer does not remove the compatibility requirement. Confirm that the panel selected a build for your current game version and operating system. After it finishes, start the server and run oxide.version in the panel console or through the supported console/RCON interface.
If no installer is available, use the panel’s file manager or FTP access and follow the same copy-and-merge procedure as a self-hosted server. Ask the provider where its active server directory is before uploading files; uploading to a backup, staging or inactive instance will not affect the running server.

Install plugins after the framework loads
Use a compatible, documented plugin source
Choose plugins from a reputable source and read the plugin’s compatibility notes before downloading. Check the target 7 Days to Die build, required uMod/Oxide version, dependencies, update history and installation instructions. A plugin can be well written yet unusable if it was written for an older game or depends on another component that is missing.

- Confirm the plugin supports your current game and framework build.
- Read every listed dependency and install prerequisites in the order the author specifies.
- Look for recent maintenance or an explicit compatibility statement after major game updates.
- Read configuration and permission instructions before enabling the plugin on a live world.
- Avoid archives or files whose origin, version or contents you cannot verify.
Copy the unchanged .cs file
Download the plugin file and leave its filename and .cs extension unchanged. Upload it to the active server installation’s plugin directory:

umod/pluginsUse the directory that already exists in your installation. Do not place the file in a client-side mods folder, a general downloads directory or an inactive server copy. Do not rename a script to make it appear different; uMod detects plugin scripts by their expected file type and location.
Allow automatic detection and compilation
OxideMod documentation states that Oxide detects changes and compiles plugins automatically, so the server does not need to be shut down merely to install or update a plugin. Upload one plugin at a time when troubleshooting, and give the server console time to process the file before adding another.
Framework replacement is different: stop the server before copying a new uMod/Oxide build. Automatic plugin detection does not make it safe to overwrite framework binaries while the server is running.

Confirm that each plugin loaded
Read the server console after uploading the file. Look for a plugin-loaded message, a compilation result or an explicit error. Many plugins also create a configuration file under the installation’s configuration directory; that file is another indication that the plugin was processed, although its absence alone does not prove failure.
If the console reports an error, keep the exact message. It usually identifies a missing dependency, incompatible API, syntax problem or incorrect file path. Resolve one plugin before adding more so that the next startup message remains attributable.
Updating after a 7 Days to Die game patch
Game updates can invalidate a previously working framework or plugin. After a 7 Days to Die update:
- Stop the server and back up the server directory and saves.
- Return to the official 7 Days to Die uMod page.
- Select the framework build matching the new game build and the server’s Windows or Linux environment.
- Replace the framework files in the active dedicated-server directory.
- Start the server and run
oxide.version. - Review every plugin’s compatibility notes and update plugins or dependencies as required.
- Watch the console for compilation errors and test the affected commands in a safe area of the world.
Do not infer compatibility from the fact that the server starts. The framework may load while an individual plugin fails to compile, loses a dependency or behaves differently after an API change. Keep the previous framework archive and backup until the updated installation is stable.
Troubleshooting uMod and plugin problems

Safe rollback and isolation
Roll back the framework
Stop the server, restore the backed-up framework files and start it again. Run oxide.version to confirm that the restored framework responds. If the game itself has changed, an older framework may no longer be compatible; use the rollback to recover the installation while you obtain the correct current build, not as a permanent substitute for version matching.
Isolate a failing plugin
When one plugin causes errors, remove or move only that plugin’s .cs file from the active plugin directory, restart or allow the framework to process the change, and inspect the console. Keep its configuration and a copy of the original script so you can restore it after obtaining a compatible release. Test plugins one at a time after a major update.

Install the framework by stopping the server and merging the correct package into the dedicated-server directory. Keeping those two workflows separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that a plugin file can compensate for a missing or incompatible framework.
