Enable oxygen in the server’s world configuration, save the file, and restart the server. In Sandbox_config.sbc, set <EnableOxygen>true</EnableOxygen>. If players must breathe inside sealed rooms, also set <EnableOxygenPressurization>true</EnableOxygenPressurization>. After that, supply oxygen with Ice, a powered O2/H2 Generator, conveyors, and an oxygen destination such as an Air Vent or tank.

What you must change on the server
Space Engineers treats oxygen as both a world rule and an in-game resource. Changing blocks alone cannot turn oxygen mechanics on if the world disables them. Conversely, enabling oxygen does not create breathable rooms without a working production chain and an airtight enclosure.

Open the world’s Sandbox_config.sbc file. A commonly documented managed-server path is config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc, where World is the save directory for the world you are running. Self-hosted installations may place the save under a different server root, so identify the active world rather than editing an unused copy.
- Stop the server before editing the world file. This prevents the running instance from overwriting your changes when it saves.
- Make a backup of
Sandbox_config.sbcso you can restore the previous world settings if the server fails to load. - Open the file in a plain-text editor.
- Locate the oxygen settings and use the exact XML values shown below.
- Save the file without changing its extension or XML structure.
- Start or restart the server, then join the same world and test a vent, cockpit, medical room, or oxygen bottle.
| Setting | Value | Effect |
|---|---|---|
EnableOxygen |
true |
Turns oxygen requirements on. Players can suffocate in environments without an oxygen source. |
EnableOxygenPressurization |
true |
Allows airtight-room calculations so an Air Vent can pressurize a sealed habitat. |
If oxygen is intentionally disabled, use <EnableOxygen>false</EnableOxygen>. With that value, players do not need oxygen in a vacuum. If oxygen is enabled but pressurization is disabled, players still need oxygen from bottles, medical rooms, cockpits, or another direct source, but open spaces cannot be turned into breathable rooms by sealing them.

Choose the oxygen mode that fits your world
The two switches are independent. Decide whether you want oxygen merely as a survival resource or as a room-management system before you configure the world.
| World configuration | What players experience | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Oxygen disabled | No vacuum suffocation requirement. Oxygen production and room pressurization are unnecessary. | Creative-style or low-maintenance survival worlds where breathing is not part of the challenge. |
| Oxygen enabled; pressurization disabled | Players must carry or access oxygen through bottles, cockpits, medical rooms, or similar consumers. Sealed rooms are not calculated as pressurized habitats. | Worlds that want oxygen logistics without the server work of checking room airtightness. |
| Oxygen enabled; pressurization enabled | Players need oxygen, and airtight rooms can be filled by a vent connected to a supply. | Survival bases, stations, and ships where breathable interiors are part of construction. |
Pressurization is the more demanding option for the server because it must calculate whether grid spaces are genuinely airtight. Large, complicated grids can make those calculations CPU-intensive. The available guidance is qualitative; there is no authoritative general number for the performance cost of a particular build.

Think of oxygen as a chain rather than a single block:
Ice → powered O2/H2 Generator → conveyor access → Oxygen Tank or consumer → Air Vent, room, cockpit, medical room, or bottle.
The generator converts Ice into gas. Conveyors move that gas between connected blocks. An Oxygen Tank provides a buffer, while a consumer requests oxygen when it needs to fill a bottle, cockpit, medical room, or vent. Breaking any link leaves the downstream block empty even if the generator itself appears complete.
Build the minimum working supply chain
1. Finish and power an O2/H2 Generator
Place an O2/H2 Generator and complete construction. It must have power before it can process Ice. A generator that is built but unpowered will not produce oxygen, and its inventory can remain empty while you troubleshoot the wrong component.

2. Provide Ice
Put Ice directly into the generator’s inventory, or make Ice available through a connected conveyor system. The generator cannot produce oxygen from an empty inventory. If Ice is being delivered from another container, inspect the conveyor route and confirm that the blocks are actually connected rather than merely touching.
3. Connect the destination
Use conveyors to connect the generator to an Oxygen Tank, Air Vent, cockpit, medical room, or bottle-handling path. The destination must be able to request gas. A disconnected vent or tank can look correctly placed while receiving nothing.
4. Add a tank when you need a buffer
An Oxygen Tank is optional for a very short direct run, but it is useful when production and consumption do not happen at the same time. The generator can fill the tank, and the tank can later supply a vent or other consumer. This separates production from demand and gives a habitat stored oxygen to draw on while the generator is idle.
5. Keep the tank in the correct mode
Stockpile mode accepts gas for storage but prevents the tank from outputting gas to requesting blocks. If a vent is connected but remains empty, check whether the tank is in Stockpile. Turn Stockpile off when the tank must feed the vent or another consumer. Use Stockpile only when you deliberately want to reserve the tank for intake.
Pressurize a sealed habitat
A breathable room requires both the server setting and a valid physical enclosure. Enabling pressurization permits airtightness calculations; it does not make a room airtight automatically.
- Build the room with complete boundaries on every side, including the ceiling, floor, doors, windows, corners, and connections to neighboring grids.
- Place an Air Vent inside the room.
- Finish construction and provide power to the vent.
- Connect the vent to an oxygen source through conveyors. The source can be a generator, an Oxygen Tank, or a chain that includes both.
- Set the vent to Pressurize.
- Keep Ice available to the generator, and make sure the tank is not in Stockpile if the tank is the supply path.
- Wait while the room fills. A large volume can take time, especially when the available source is small or the supply is shared with other consumers.
The word “airtight” is literal in this system. A door left open, a missing block, a damaged block, an unsealed window, or a troublesome corner can prevent the room from reaching a pressurized state. Check the entire boundary instead of looking only at the wall nearest the vent.

Understand Air Vent indicators
The vent’s color gives you a short diagnostic path. Use it together with the power, conveyor, Ice, and tank checks rather than replacing blocks at random.
| Indicator | Meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Red | The vent is not operating normally. | Confirm that the vent is enabled and receiving power. Then verify that its conveyor connection reaches an oxygen source. |
| Yellow | The room is not being recognized as fully airtight or oxygen access is incomplete. | Inspect every room boundary for an open door, missing or damaged block, unsealed window, or bad corner. Confirm the vent can request oxygen. |
| Green | The vent is pressurizing the room. | Leave the vent running, keep the oxygen source available, and allow time for the room to fill. |
| Blue | The vent is depressurizing the room. | Check that connected storage has enough capacity to accept the gas being removed. |
Color alone does not identify every failure. A green vent can still stop progressing if Ice runs out, power is lost, or an upstream tank changes to Stockpile. A yellow vent can remain yellow even with a full tank if one small opening makes the room non-airtight.

The generator has no Ice
Open the generator inventory. If it is empty, insert Ice or restore the conveyor route that should deliver it. A conveyor connection that carries other items is not proof that every intended path is available; inspect the actual route and endpoint.
The generator has no power
Check the grid’s power production and the generator’s enabled state. A completed block still needs electrical power to process Ice.
There is no requesting consumer
Gas does not necessarily move simply because blocks are connected. A tank, vent, cockpit, medical room, or bottle path must be able to request oxygen. If the downstream block is disabled, full, disconnected, or otherwise unable to accept gas, the source may remain unchanged.
The conveyor path is broken
Trace the route from generator to destination one block at a time. Look for a missing conveyor segment, an incorrectly oriented connection, a block on another grid, or a junction that does not actually connect the intended systems.

The tank is blocking output
Turn off Stockpile when the tank must supply another block. Stockpile is an intake mode, so a tank left in that state can make a vent look starved even when the tank contains oxygen.
The vent is unpowered or disabled
A vent cannot pressurize a room while it is red because it is switched off or lacks power. Restore power, enable the block, and then recheck its color and inventory path.

Pressurization is disabled in the world
If EnableOxygenPressurization is false, the server does not perform airtight-room calculations. A perfectly built room will not become a breathable pressurized volume through an Air Vent under that configuration. Change the world setting and restart the server before testing again.

If EnableOxygen is false, the world removes the need to breathe. That setting is different from a vent failure; it changes the survival rule globally. Enable oxygen first when your scenario requires suffocation and oxygen consumption.
The enclosure has a leak
Inspect the whole volume, not just visible wall faces. Open doors, damaged blocks, unsealed windows, and corner gaps are common causes. If the room shares a boundary with another structure, check the connection between grids and any passage that was left open during construction.
The room has no oxygen access
Confirm that the Air Vent is powered, enabled, connected to a generator or tank, and set to Pressurize. If a tank is the source, disable Stockpile. If a generator is the source, confirm Ice and power.

The room is still filling
A working vent may need time to pressurize a large room. Keep the supply online and watch for the indicator to move to green rather than repeatedly toggling the block.
Managed hosting versus self-hosted editing
The oxygen mechanics are the same, but the way you reach the world file differs.
| Administration method | Typical process | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted server | Stop the server, locate the active save directory, edit Sandbox_config.sbc, save, and restart. |
Confirm that the file belongs to the world the server actually launches. |
| Managed hosting panel | Use the provider’s file manager or configuration editor to open the save path, change the XML values, save, and use the panel’s restart control. | Ensure the panel is editing the same world selected by the server startup settings. |
If a setting appears to have no effect, the most common administrative explanation is that the wrong save was edited or the server was not restarted after saving. Verify the active world name, check the file’s changed values, and perform a full restart before rebuilding in-game equipment.
Performance considerations
Oxygen production itself is a block interaction, but pressurization adds airtightness checks. Large and complex grids can make those calculations CPU-intensive. The practical implication is to be deliberate with enormous interiors, many connected rooms, and intricate grid layouts when running a busy server.
No authoritative published figure establishes a universal oxygen-consumption rate, generator throughput, or exact CPU cost for this setup. Do not size a server from an assumed rate or treat one build’s behavior as a benchmark for every world. Instead, monitor the server under the actual player load and construction style you intend to support.

EnableOxygenis true if players should need to breathe.EnableOxygenPressurizationis true if sealed rooms should be breathable.- The O2/H2 Generator is complete, enabled, powered, and supplied with Ice.
- Conveyors form a continuous path to the intended tank or consumer.
- An Oxygen Tank is not in Stockpile when it must feed a vent.

- You allow time for a large room to fill before declaring the system broken.
Fast decision guide
You only want players to carry oxygen
Enable oxygen and leave pressurization disabled. Provide oxygen through bottles, cockpits, medical rooms, or other direct consumers. Do not spend time sealing rooms for vent-based breathing because the server will not calculate pressurized interiors in this mode.
You want breathable bases
Enable both settings. Build an airtight room, install a powered vent, and connect it to a generator or tank. Keep Ice available and confirm the tank can output.
You want the simplest possible world
Leave oxygen disabled. Players will not suffocate in vacuum, and the generator, tank, conveyor, and vent chain is unnecessary unless you later change the world rules.
You want reliable supply during interruptions
Use the generator to fill an Oxygen Tank, then let the tank buffer demand. Switch Stockpile on only when you are intentionally storing gas; switch it off when the tank must supply the vent or another requester.
