The exact format Rust expects
Rust treats server.description as one quoted configuration value. The text shown in the server connection or information window is generated from that value, and the parser turns the two-character escape sequence backslash plus lowercase n into a line break.

Facepunch’s server guide describes +server.description as the “Description shown on server connection window.” Whether you set it with a startup command, a panel field, or server.cfg, the value uses the same escaped line-break notation.
Why pressing Enter causes problems
A configuration entry is parsed as a single setting. A physical newline inside the quoted value can terminate the entry early, leave the remaining text outside the value, or be rejected by a hosting panel. It is not equivalent to the escaped sequence Rust expects.
Think of the distinction this way:

Use a backslash followed by a lowercase n. A forward slash, an uppercase N, or a copied typographic slash will be treated as different characters and will not produce the intended break.
Step-by-step: edit a self-hosted server

Find the active description setting
Open the Rust server’s active
server.cfg. If your launch process supplies settings on a startup command instead, locate the field containing+server.description. Some control panels expose the same value in a server-settings form rather than showing the file directly.Rank #2

Edit the configuration for the server identity that players actually join. Rust installations can contain more than one instance or identity, so changing a similarly named file for a test instance will not change the public listing.

Keep the complete value on one physical line
Place the opening and closing quotation marks around the entire description. Insert

Soft wrapping in an editor is harmless; an actual newline character is not.

Check quoting and spelling
Make sure the property is spelled
server.description, the value begins and ends with a matching quote, and every escape uses a backslash plus lowercasen. Keep punctuation and spaces exactly where you want them to appear. If you paste text from a formatted editor, replace curly quotation marks with ordinary straight quotes.Rank #3

Save the configuration
Save the file or the panel field that owns the setting. If a panel has both a startup-command field and a generated
server.cfg, use the panel’s documented source of truth; changing a generated file may be overwritten during the next save. -
Apply the change without a restart when supported
Issue
server.readcfgthrough the server console if your host supports runtime configuration reloads. This rereads the configuration so the new description can take effect without a full server restart. Verify from the player-facing view
Open the server information or connection window and inspect the description as a player would see it. Confirm that each intended paragraph starts on a new line, the blank lines are present, and no literal escape text is displayed.

These examples show the placement of the escapes. Replace the words with your own rules and schedule while retaining the one-line configuration format.

Use nn when the next block is a distinct idea that should be visually separated.
What to put in the description
The description is prose for people who open the server’s connection or information view. Useful content includes:

- Wipe schedule: state the day and, when relevant, the time zone.
- Gameplay rates: identify unusual gathering, crafting, or decay settings so players know what to expect.
- Rules: summarize the rules that affect a player’s decision to join.
- Region: identify the community’s usual location or expected time zone, especially when latency or event times matter.
- Community details: provide a Discord or other community destination if you maintain one.
- Support instructions: explain how players should report problems or contact an administrator.
Keep the first block useful to someone scanning the server list. Put the server’s identity and play style first, then use a blank line before schedules, detailed rules, or support information. Paragraph breaks improve readability, but they do not replace concise wording; players still need to be able to understand the key facts quickly.
Use server.tags for browser filters
Do not turn the prose description into a substitute for discovery metadata. Rust uses server.tags for browser filters, configured as a comma-separated value. Facepunch lists examples such as weekly, monthly, vanilla, pve, roleplay, and creative, along with region values such as NA, EU, and OC.

Putting tags in the description may tell a player what the server is, but it does not configure the corresponding browser filters. Set both values when you want the server to be easy to find and easy to understand.

Reloading and checking the result
After saving, allow the configuration to reload before judging the result. With a supported runtime reload, issue:
server.readcfgThen reopen the server information view. If your host requires a restart, restart through its normal panel controls and wait until the server is online again before checking.
Check three separate things:
- The description displays multiple lines rather than one continuous sentence.
- Paragraphs have one empty line where you entered
nn. - No literal backslash-and-
ntext appears in the rendered description.
If the old text remains after a successful reload, confirm that you edited the active server identity and configuration file. A reload cannot apply a change saved in a different instance’s file.
Troubleshooting paragraph breaks

Editing through a managed hosting panel
A managed host may provide a text box for the description instead of direct file access. The underlying rule is unchanged: the value must be stored as one quoted setting with escaped line breaks. Enter n where the next line should begin and nn between paragraphs unless the panel explicitly provides a separate multiline editor that converts its contents for you.
Panel behavior differs. Some hosts expose server.readcfg; others require a save followed by a restart. If the panel removes backslashes, inserts physical newlines, or regenerates server.cfg, use its raw startup/configuration field or ask the host which field controls server.description. Do not assume that a visually multiline text box is storing the same escaped value Rust reads.
