To send playlist audio and video to YouTube Live with GStreamer, you need to play or decode each media item, route its audio and video through compatible encoders, combine the encoded streams in an FLV muxer, and send that output to YouTube’s assigned RTMP or RTMPS ingest address. There is no universal playlist command: the working pipeline depends on your media formats, installed GStreamer plugins, and broadcast configuration.
Understand the streaming path
The workflow has three parts: playlist playback and decoding, audio/video encoding and muxing, then delivery to YouTube. The overall shape is:
playlist URIs → decode and select audio/video → convert and encode each stream → FLV mux → RTMP/RTMPS sink
GStreamer’s playbin can recognize media types, select demuxers and decoders, handle audio and video, and manage network buffering. But it normally sends playback to local audio and video sinks. That is not the same as sending the media to YouTube: a streaming application must redirect decoded output into processing branches that lead to encoders and a muxer.

Choose how to manage the playlist
Use playbin in an application
For a playlist of varied media, an application can use playbin to handle media recognition and decoding. The application must supply or construct custom sink bins so audio and video reach the streaming branches rather than speakers or a display. It must also advance to the next item: GStreamer documents setting the next URI through the about-to-finish flow.
This approach delegates much of format recognition and decoding to playbin, while leaving output routing, stream selection, playlist transitions, and the encoding configuration to your application.

Build an explicit decode and encode pipeline
An explicit pipeline can give an application more direct control over queues, conversion, encoders, and muxing. It also means handling decoded streams and dynamic pads, which depend on the input media and available plugins. The official component documentation establishes the architecture, but not a tested, one-line playlist pipeline that works across GStreamer builds and media formats.
When choosing between the approaches, consider the variety of input formats, the plugins available on the target machine, control over audio/video selection and transitions, encoder performance, synchronization, and how much pipeline behavior your application needs to manage.

Connect the encoded streams to YouTube
GStreamer’s rtmpsink sends data to a server over RTMP and requires FLV input. The documented route is to mux audio and video with flvmux, then pass the result to rtmpsink. The sink is part of GStreamer Bad Plug-ins, so it may not be present in every installation. The plugin reference identifies flvmux as preferable to avmux_flv.
The sink documentation includes this limited test-video example:

gst-launch-1.0 -v videotestsrc ! ffenc_flv ! flvmux ! rtmpsink location='rtmp://localhost/path/to/stream live=1'
This demonstrates a test source, FLV muxing, and RTMP delivery; it does not play a playlist, prove that ffenc_flv is installed, or establish that the encoder is appropriate for YouTube. For playlist content, the encoded audio and video branches must both feed the muxer in formats it accepts. A production pipeline must match the installed elements and negotiated formats.
Use the ingest details for your broadcast
Do not copy the localhost example or hard-code a generic destination. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes ingestion information returned for a live stream, including its primary ingestion URL and stream name, and distinguishes RTMP from RTMPS primary addresses. Configure the sink using the values assigned to your broadcast and the appropriate protocol. Treat the stream name or key as a secret: do not publish it in logs, examples, or source code that others can access.

Validate the pipeline before relying on it
The component roles are documented, but a complete successful command and YouTube-specific encoder profile cannot be prescribed without knowing your GStreamer release, installed plugins, media formats, and stream configuration. Test the pipeline on the target system and verify each of these points:
- Plugin availability: confirm the required source, decoder, conversion, encoder, muxer, and RTMP sink elements are installed. In particular, check whether the Bad Plug-ins package supplies
rtmpsink. - Dynamic pads and caps: confirm that the decoded audio and video streams are linked to compatible conversion and encoder branches, and that the muxer receives supported formats.
- Playlist transitions: verify that the next URI is set at the appropriate time and that playback continues when the current item ends.
- Timestamps and synchronization: watch for timestamp discontinuities or audio/video drift, especially across item changes.
- YouTube ingest acceptance: confirm that the configured destination and stream name match the broadcast and that YouTube receives the stream.
Do not assume a particular encoder, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval is universally required based on the GStreamer component examples above; those examples do not establish a current YouTube settings profile.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GStreamer reports that an element is missing | A required plugin is not installed or available to the running GStreamer build. | Check the installed plugin inventory, including the Bad Plug-ins package for rtmpsink, and confirm the chosen encoders and muxer are present. |
| Audio or video plays locally but does not reach the stream | Playback is still using playbin’s default local sinks. | Route decoded output into custom processing sink bins or use an explicit decode-and-encode design. |
| The muxer will not link to an encoder branch | The branch output caps may not be accepted by the muxer, or the pipeline may be missing conversion or encoding stages. | Inspect negotiated formats and ensure that both encoded streams are in formats accepted by FLV muxing. |
| The connection fails or YouTube does not receive the stream | The destination, protocol, or stream name may not match the assigned ingest details. | Use the primary ingestion information for the specific live stream and verify the RTMP or RTMPS choice. |
| Playback stops at the end of an item | The application has not queued the next playlist URI. | Check the playbin about-to-finish handling and the URI supplied for the next item. |
| Audio and video drift or break at a transition | Timing, timestamps, or stream continuity may differ between items. | Inspect timestamps and synchronization across playlist transitions on the target pipeline. |
