To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a personal or business/other-name channel, set up its basic identity in YouTube Studio, then record and upload a useful first video. A phone is enough to begin; you do not need to buy a camera or wait for a perfect setup. Monetization is a later, conditional step—not an automatic result of creating a channel.
How do I start creating on YouTube?
Start with the channel type that fits who will own and manage it, then make the channel understandable to a first-time visitor. YouTube requires a channel to upload videos, comment, or make playlists.
1. Choose a personal or business/other-name channel
- Personal channel: best when you will manage the channel yourself under your Google Account.
- Business or other-name channel: YouTube describes this option as associated with a Brand Account; it can have more than one owner or manager, which may suit a team or organization.
A supervised experience may limit channel creation. See YouTube’s current channel-creation instructions for eligibility and menu details, since interface wording can change.
2. Create the channel
- Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account that should own or manage the channel.
- Open the channel management or create-channel controls and choose the option for the channel type you want.
- Set a channel name, picture, and handle. You can refine the branding later; these choices do not need to delay your first upload.
3. Make the channel page clear
In YouTube Studio, open Customization. The Home tab lets you arrange a channel trailer, featured video, and channel sections. The Profile area includes the profile picture, banner, watermark, channel name, handle, description, and site links. At launch, prioritize a recognizable identity and a short description explaining what viewers can expect.
Choose a first video format and subject
YouTube supports both longer videos and Shorts. Pick the format that suits the subject and the way you can realistically make content; there is no universal format that guarantees faster growth, and you do not have to publish both. YouTube’s creator guide covers ways to create and publish content.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a video-game channel, a useful first upload could be a concise gameplay tip, a review of a game you know well, a beginner guide, or a clearly framed play session with commentary. Choose something you can finish and that gives a viewer a reason to click. Treat the first upload as a way to learn your recording and editing workflow, not as a promise of views.
Record your first video with the gear you have
YouTube’s equipment guidance says, “Use your mobile device to get started immediately!” and its mobile filming page says, “All you need to get started on YouTube is a mobile device.” A dedicated camera is optional; upgrade only when your current setup has a specific limitation.

Camera and framing
A phone camera is a legitimate starting point. For a landscape HD video, YouTube’s mobile guidance recommends horizontal 16:9 framing, using the rear camera when possible, turning off notifications, and controlling focus and exposure. These are useful starting suggestions, not requirements for every kind of video. If you are recording gameplay directly from a console or PC, your capture workflow may differ from filming yourself with a phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSound and microphone choices
Prioritize clear, understandable speech. YouTube’s equipment guide notes that an onboard camera microphone may require staying three to four feet away for best audio. A directional shotgun microphone can suit longer-range natural sound; a wireless lavalier can attach to the speaker when recording at a distance. Before buying anything, check that the microphone and any required adapter work with your actual camera or phone connector. A compatible wireless lavalier microphone for phone is an optional search phrase if you need to speak while moving or standing away from the device.

Light and recording setup
Natural daylight from a window or outdoor light can be enough. If you need more control, options include a two-point setup with key and fill lights, soft lights, or a camera-mounted light. Match the setup to where and how you film; no particular lighting purchase is required to start.
Before recording, choose a location, consider lighting and sound, and keep a brief outline or script nearby. Avoid showing private identifying details in the background. Record a short test clip and check the picture and audio before making a longer take.

Upload and publish the first video
- Sign in to the channel you created and use YouTube’s Create flow to upload a longer video or create a Short.
- Follow the on-screen steps to add the video and its details, then review the audience and visibility choices before publishing.
- Play the published video from the channel page to check that it appears as intended. Note one improvement for your next recording, such as clearer speech, steadier framing, or a tighter outline.
YouTube’s menus and upload options can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio if labels differ. There is no evidence-based required posting schedule or guaranteed formula for reach; focus on making the next video better and useful to the audience you want to serve.
How do I grow my channel?
Growth is not guaranteed by a particular niche, upload count, gear purchase, or posting cadence. Make the channel’s promise easy to understand, choose topics that serve a real viewer interest, and use the production experience and audience response to improve future videos. YouTube’s creator guide offers platform guidance, but does not establish a universal growth timetable.

When can a YouTube channel earn money?
Creating a channel does not immediately enable earnings. YouTube’s official eligibility criteria, accessed October 3, 2026, distinguish an expanded YouTube Partner Program entry path from the threshold for ad revenue sharing. Availability depends on the country or region, policy compliance, and feature-specific requirements; meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance, because YouTube reviews applications. Check the official YouTube Partner Program requirements and your account’s Studio Earn area for current, account-specific status.
| Path | YouTube’s stated eligibility criteria (2026; official criteria accessed October 3, 2026) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP entry | 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | May provide earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to the relevant feature requirements. |
| Ad revenue sharing | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Eligibility for review for ad revenue sharing; the threshold alone does not guarantee approval or earnings. |
