To add a PocketMine-MP plugin, obtain a release that supports your server’s PocketMine API, place its .phar file directly in the server data folder’s plugins directory, and restart the server. What you need before installing a plugin
Have access to the PocketMine-MP server’s data directory and its console or hosting control panel. You also need the server’s exact build and API version. Record the API shown at startup or in the server information, then compare it with the API declared by the plugin release. The API value is the compatibility gate; if it does not match a supported server API, PocketMine will refuse to load the plugin.
- A backup: copy the server configuration and every world before enabling third-party code. A plugin can contain bugs or make changes that are difficult to reverse. Keep the backup separate from the live data directory.
- A trusted download: use a release from the Poggit release platform named in PocketMine’s documentation or a public project repository. Prefer releases that state their supported API, version, dependencies and runtime requirements. Avoid treating an unlabelled file found in a forum attachment as a release.
- A maintenance window: stop the server through its normal console or hosting-panel control before changing plugin files. The documentation requires a restart for changes to load; stopping first also prevents files being changed while they are in use.
- A rollback copy: retain the previous plugin file outside the active
pluginsdirectory until the new version has been tested. Two copies of one plugin should never remain in the live directory.
Choose the format you downloaded
PocketMine supports several plugin layouts. The correct destination is the same plugins directory, but the item you copy there differs.

Do not copy an archive’s outer download folder instead of the plugin itself. For example, if extracting a download produces ExamplePlugin/ExamplePlugin.phar, the file that belongs in plugins is the inner ExamplePlugin.phar. A PHAR should not be hidden one level deeper in an extra directory.
A PHAR is the normal distribution format because it bundles the plugin for loading as one file. Do not unpack it merely to inspect or modify it; use the project’s explicitly provided development format when you need source files. A development tree is not interchangeable with a release archive if files have been omitted.

- Check the server API. Write down the PocketMine-MP version and API reported by the server. A version number alone is not enough when a release declares a different API.
- Read the plugin release metadata. Confirm the supported API, required companion plugins and any PHP extension requirements. Check whether the release lists supported protocol versions or operating systems. Do not assume that the newest download supports your server build.
- Obtain the release from a reputable location. PocketMine’s documentation names Poggit as a release platform; a public project repository is another appropriate source when its release information is clear. Keep the original filename so you can identify the installed version later.
- Stop PocketMine-MP. Use the server’s normal stop action in the console or hosting panel, and wait until the process has fully exited. Editing a live directory can leave an incomplete file and makes troubleshooting harder.
- Open the server data folder. Locate the folder that contains the server’s configuration, worlds and
pluginsdirectory. The folder calledpluginsis the destination; a general downloads folder is not. - Copy the PHAR directly into
plugins. For example, the final path should be<server-data>/plugins/ExamplePlugin.phar. Keep the file packaged; do not unpack a PHAR unless the plugin’s author specifically distributes a development version. - Check for duplicates. If an older release or a second copy with a changed filename is already present, move it outside the active directory before starting. Duplicate copies can produce conflicts or make you test the wrong file.
- Start the server again. PocketMine scans the directory during startup and attempts to load the plugin. A restart, rather than merely refreshing a control panel, is required.
- Read the startup console. Look for the plugin’s load message or an explicit error. A clean-looking file copy does not prove that the plugin enabled successfully.
- Test in a backed-up world. Check the commands, permissions or behavior described by the plugin author, and watch the console for runtime errors before allowing normal players back.
Install a development-format plugin
A development plugin is not a single PHAR. Its folder normally includes a plugin.yml manifest and a src directory containing the PHP source. Keep that structure intact.
- Stop the server and make a backup.
- Obtain the complete development folder from the project repository or release package.
- Open the folder and verify that
plugin.ymlis at its top level, alongsidesrc, rather than buried in another nested folder. - Copy that complete folder into
<server-data>/plugins/. - Confirm that the folder name is not merely an outer archive directory containing another copy of the plugin folder. PocketMine must be able to find the manifest at the expected level.
- Restart PocketMine-MP and inspect the console for API, dependency or PHP errors.
If the folder has an extra wrapper directory, correct the layout so PocketMine can find plugin.yml where it expects it. A source tree with missing files is not equivalent to a packaged release. When a project offers both a source tree and a built PHAR, choose one format rather than placing both in plugins.
Script plugins: the single-file exception
PocketMine’s documentation also describes script plugins: one PHP file placed in the plugins directory, with its metadata supplied in a PHPDoc comment. They are convenient for small additions, but they have limitations compared with full plugins. Treat the script’s documented requirements and supported features as authoritative, and restart the server after copying it.
Because the metadata is inside the PHP file rather than a separate plugin.yml, an error in that comment can prevent loading. Keep a copy of the original script and read the startup output just as you would for a PHAR. A script plugin is not a way to bypass API or PHP compatibility checks.
Understand the plugin manifest
Every normal plugin is described by plugin.yml. The official manifest reference lists four required fields:

The manifest can also declare optional constraints and relationships:
- Hard dependencies: companion plugins that must be present before this plugin can load.
- Soft dependencies: plugins that enhance or integrate with it when available.
- Required PHP extensions: runtime extensions that must be enabled.
- Supported protocol versions: Bedrock protocol versions accepted by the plugin.
- Operating-system restrictions: platforms on which the plugin is supported.
These entries explain why two plugins built for apparently similar server versions can behave differently. Read the declarations before changing unrelated server files. An API mismatch is different from a missing dependency, and both are different from a missing PHP extension. A plugin can satisfy the API check yet still be rejected because a required companion or extension is absent.
How to choose a compatible release
Start with the server, not with the plugin download page. Record the exact PocketMine-MP build and API shown by the running server. Then inspect the release metadata, manifest or project documentation for the plugin’s supported API. Select a release whose declared range includes the server API.

Compatibility is a set of requirements, not only a filename or a version number. If no release supports the current API, the practical choices are to find an older compatible plugin release, replace the plugin with another project, or plan a PocketMine update after checking every installed plugin. Updating only the server can turn several previously working plugins into incompatible ones.
How to confirm that the plugin loaded
The console is the authoritative first check. On a successful start, PocketMine should process the plugin without reporting a load failure. Then verify the plugin’s advertised behavior in a controlled world: run its documented command, check its event or feature, or inspect the in-game permissions it adds.
If the plugin appears in a list but its feature does nothing, keep the console open while reproducing the problem. A plugin can pass startup validation and still report a configuration, permission or runtime exception later. Save the exact error text, the PocketMine build and the plugin version before asking the plugin author for help. Avoid reporting only that “it does not work”; the startup message usually distinguishes an API, dependency, path or runtime problem.
Updating or replacing a plugin safely
PocketMine’s documentation specifically instructs administrators to delete old plugin versions before copying a replacement, then restart the server to see changes. Do not leave two releases of the same plugin in the directory: both files can be scanned, producing conflicts or an ambiguous load result.

- Stop the server and back up its data.
- Remove the existing version of the plugin from
plugins. - Copy the replacement PHAR or development folder into the same directory.
- Check the replacement’s API and dependency declarations again; an update may raise its requirements.
- Restart and read the full startup log, not only the final “server started” line.
- Test the affected commands or gameplay in a copy or controlled world before returning players to normal operation.
Keep the previous file outside the active plugins directory if you may need to roll back. If the new version prevents startup, stop the server, restore the old version and investigate the update’s stated compatibility. Do not restore an old plugin while leaving new configuration or world changes unexplained; use the backup when the plugin has altered data you cannot safely reverse.
Troubleshooting: why a plugin will not load
“Incompatible API” or an API-related refusal
Open the plugin metadata and compare its api field with the server’s API. A plugin built for a different API cannot be made compatible simply by renaming the file. Install a release that supports your server, or update PocketMine-MP only after checking the compatibility of the rest of your plugin set.
The file is in the wrong place
Verify the final path. A packaged plugin must be directly inside the server data folder’s plugins directory, not in the server root, a downloads folder or an extra nested directory. For a development plugin, plugin.yml must be at the top level of the copied plugin folder.
An old copy is still present
List the files in plugins and remove the previous release before installing the replacement. Leaving both versions can cause duplicate names, conflicting classes or an administrator to test the wrong file.

A required dependency is missing
Read the manifest’s dependency declarations and the release notes. Install each required companion plugin, verify that its API also matches the server, and restart only after all required files are present. A soft dependency is different: the plugin may load without it, but an integration feature may not appear.
A PHP extension or runtime requirement is missing
PocketMine-MP is written in PHP, and the PHP version and extension requirements vary by release. Use the current PocketMine-MP release documentation and the plugin’s own manifest as the authority for runtime requirements. Do not change PHP versions blindly: a runtime change can affect every plugin on the server. Check the runtime requirement reported by the release you are actually installing rather than relying on an old tutorial.
The plugin starts, but its feature is unavailable
Check permissions, configuration files and the exact command or event documented by the plugin author. Reproduce the issue while watching the console, then capture the resulting error. Startup success only establishes that PocketMine accepted the manifest and loaded the entry point; it does not guarantee that every feature is configured.

The script file is rejected
Confirm that the file is a supported script-plugin format with the required PHPDoc metadata and that it is directly in plugins. If the author provides a PHAR or development package, use that supported release instead of altering the script by hand.
You expected vanilla Bedrock behavior
PocketMine-MP is extensible server software, not a vanilla Minecraft server. The project explicitly identifies gaps including vanilla world generation, redstone and mob AI. If your goal depends on those mechanics, confirm that PocketMine is suitable before trying to solve the limitation with plugins; a plugin cannot automatically provide complete parity with the official Bedrock server.
PocketMine-MP versus the official Bedrock server

Installing a plugin has no required physical purchase: PocketMine-MP and plugin installation are software tasks. Your costs are usually the machine, storage, bandwidth and administration time you already budget for the server.
