Configure scene transitions in your streaming software—not in YouTube Live Control Room. In OBS Studio, create scenes, choose a transition such as Cut or Fade, and set its duration. If you want to prepare the next scene before viewers see it, use Studio Mode. Streamlabs Desktop offers a Motion transition as another option.
Where YouTube scene transitions are configured
YouTube Studio’s Go live flow and Live Control Room help you create and manage a stream. The transition between scenes is set in the encoder you use to send video, such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop. Create your scenes
In OBS, make a scene for each part of the broadcast you want to show—for example, an opening, gameplay, a break, and an ending. A scene is a layout that combines sources such as games, webcams, devices, or media. Add and arrange the sources for each scene before setting up the transition. See the OBS Studio Quick Start Guide.

Choose a transition
Find the Scene Transitions section in OBS and select a transition. Cut and Fade are available from first launch. OBS also lists built-in options including Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe. The choice is stylistic: use a direct cut when you want an immediate change, or a gradual transition when that better fits the content. OBS does not rank these effects or establish that one improves retention.

Set the duration
Use the duration control in the transition area to set how long the scene change takes. There is no universal best duration established here; choose one that suits your content and pacing, then preview it before going live.

Preview the next scene with Studio Mode
Enable Studio Mode if you want to prepare a scene without immediately showing it to viewers. The live scene stays on air while you work on the next scene in the edit area. Click Transition when you are ready to make the prepared scene live. OBS also lets you configure Quick Transitions or hotkeys for switching scenes. Viewers cannot see whether Studio Mode is enabled.

Test the whole change
Before the broadcast, switch between your scenes and check that the selected effect and duration look right, and that the intended sources appear in each layout. If you use Studio Mode, confirm that the prepared scene does not go live until you trigger the transition.
Which OBS transition should you use?

Choose based on the visual style, how long the change takes, whether you need to preview the next scene, and whether you prefer a button or hotkey. The controls provide options; they do not establish a universally best effect or duration.

Add a Motion transition in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open the Scene Transition menu and choose Add Transition.
- Select Motion as the transition type.
- Set the duration and adjust acceleration to shape how the animation speeds up or slows down.
- Preview the switch. A source present in both scenes animates between its positions; a source present in only one scene zooms in or out.
