To use silence as a transition trigger, combine the filter with a playlist controller or script that interprets its events. For many shows, scheduling from known file boundaries is simpler and more reliable.
What silence detection does—and does not do
silencedetect measures audio against a configured volume threshold and minimum duration. When the signal stays at or below that threshold long enough, FFmpeg reports a silence event, including timestamps and silence-start, silence-end, and duration metadata. It detects; it does not manage a playlist or switch files automatically. FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes the filter and its options.
The documented defaults are a noise threshold of -60 dB and a minimum duration of 2 seconds. Treat these as starting points, not universal settings: quiet speech, room tone, a music bed, and background noise can all change what the filter considers silence. The mono option evaluates channels separately, which can help when stereo channels have different audio levels.
Choose how episodes will advance
Use known file boundaries when possible
If the episodes are local files with known lengths, use those boundaries as the primary schedule. A playlist controller can advance when one file ends, avoiding the risk that a pause inside an episode will be mistaken for its conclusion.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use silence-triggered transitions for variable gaps
If the gap between episodes varies and should determine the transition, a separate controller or script must read FFmpeg’s silence events and advance the playlist. The exact setup depends on whether the episodes are files, separate inputs, or part of an existing live audio source, and on how you provide the video track.
Before automating transitions, decide what counts as a between-episode gap. Set a threshold low enough not to classify quiet speech as silence, then set a minimum duration long enough to ignore ordinary pauses. Test representative episodes and inspect FFmpeg’s reported timestamps. Do not assume a single threshold will work for every recording.

Inspect a recording with FFmpeg first
Use the filter on a sample episode and send the analysis output to the null muxer. Replace episode.mp3 with your input file:
ffmpeg -i episode.mp3 -af silencedetect=noise=-60dB:d=2 -f null -
This is a diagnostic example, not a live scheduler: FFmpeg reports detected silence, but it does not start the next episode. Change noise and d to test candidate thresholds and durations against your recordings. Confirm that reported silence timestamps match the gaps you intend to use before connecting the output to playlist logic.

Build the transition workflow
- Prepare the episode order. List the files in the intended sequence and decide what should happen after the final episode: loop the playlist, stop the stream, or play a scheduled break.
- Choose the transition rule. Prefer file-end scheduling when boundaries are known. For silence-triggered advancement, define the threshold and minimum duration and have a controller interpret FFmpeg’s events.
- Choose the transition itself. Decide whether to cut directly to the next episode, insert a fixed silence, or bridge the gap with a short station ID or music bed. Silence detection cannot make this editorial choice.
- Handle failures explicitly. Define what the controller should do if a file is missing, the final episode ends, the connection drops, or an intentional break occurs. Test those cases before relying on unattended playback.
- Validate with a private or unlisted stream. Check episode order, transitions, audio continuity, and recovery behavior before broadcasting publicly. Exact commands and orchestration depend on your input and video setup; the diagnostic command above alone does not create video, schedule multiple files, or guarantee gapless playback.
Configure the YouTube Live output
Create or configure the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then use the stream URL and stream key shown there in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube’s settings also include options for starting or stopping a stream from the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
For encoder settings, YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the keyframe interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Its advanced audio recommendations include stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Video bitrate depends on the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps.

Test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A successful silence detector does not by itself confirm that the outgoing stream is healthy.

- A pause in speech advances the playlist. The silence rule is too permissive for that recording. Raise the minimum duration, adjust the threshold, or use file boundaries instead; validate changes against quiet passages.
- The gap is not detected. The threshold may be too low for the recording’s noise floor, or the minimum duration may be longer than the gap. Inspect reported events and tune both values using representative audio.
- The next episode never starts. Detection only reports an event. Check that the controller is reading FFmpeg’s output and that its transition logic advances the playlist.
- The transition is abrupt or has an unwanted gap. Choose and implement the intended transition—direct cut, fixed silence, or a short bridge—in the playlist workflow.
- YouTube does not receive the stream reliably. Verify the stream URL and key, encoder settings, and Live Control Room health indicators. Use a private or unlisted test before a public broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your larger goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is an alternative for cloud playback, not a replacement for adding custom silence-triggered playlist logic to your FFmpeg workflow.
