OBS Replay Buffer saves a short, recent segment of your broadcast as a local clip; it does not keep the YouTube stream running and is not a complete archive of a 24/7 show. To set it up, enable it under Settings > Output, choose a duration your computer can handle, and bind Save Replay Buffer under Settings > Hotkeys. Test it while streaming before relying on it, and confirm you have the rights to use every track in the live broadcast.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
Replay Buffer continuously holds recent audio and video in memory so you can save that recent segment when you press a hotkey. The saved clip is written to your computer. It is useful for capturing a song transition, a notable moment, or a short segment of a long broadcast.
- It is not the stream itself. Turning on Replay Buffer does not start or maintain a YouTube live broadcast.
- It is not a full-show archive. It saves a recent window, not every hour of a 24/7 program. Plan and test a separate local recording or other verified capture method if you need the whole show.
- It uses local resources. The computer running OBS must remain available, and the buffer and saved clips need a suitable storage path.
OBS documents Replay Buffer controls and hotkeys in its OBS Studio overview. Its standard recording guide explains recording paths and resource considerations.
Configure Replay Buffer in OBS
- Open the output settings. In OBS, select Settings > Output. Find the Replay Buffer controls and enable Replay Buffer. If your Output Mode exposes separate output tabs or controls, locate the Replay Buffer option in the installed version rather than assuming a particular layout.
- Choose a buffer duration. Set how much recent content you want available to save. There is no universal duration recommended by the cited OBS guidance: choose a window that suits the moments you want to capture and test its performance on the actual machine while streaming.
- Choose the recording destination and check space. Set the local recording path in OBS and confirm the destination has enough free space for the clips and any separate continuous recordings you intend to keep. OBS lets you configure recording paths; capacity depends on your output settings and how long you retain files.
- Bind the save hotkey. Open Settings > Hotkeys, find Save Replay Buffer, and assign a key combination that is unlikely to conflict with other controls. OBS also documents hotkeys for starting and stopping the buffer. Use the save command only after the buffer is running.
- Apply the settings and test. Start the buffer, run a private or unlisted YouTube test, then press the save hotkey. Confirm that a clip appears in the chosen location and contains the segment you expected. Check audio routing, video playback, encoder load, and dropped frames while the stream and buffer are active.
OBS recommends MKV for standard recordings because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. That is recording guidance; do not assume every Replay Buffer configuration behaves identically. Check the resulting file and settings in your own OBS version. See the OBS recording guide.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose duration and quality by testing, not guessing
The right settings depend on the clip length you want, the computer, your stream output, available storage, and the upload connection. OBS notes that recording quality options other than Same as stream, or using a separate encoder, can consume additional system resources. YouTube likewise advises creators to test their setup and assess stream quality against the available internet connection.
- Buffer length: Longer windows preserve more recent content but require more resources. Start with a modest duration and increase it only if simultaneous streaming and saving remain reliable.
- Encoder and quality: Avoid changing multiple output variables at once. Compare the OBS resource load and resulting clips during a test; do not assume a particular encoder, bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval is right for every machine and connection.
- Storage: Replay clips and continuous local recordings have different retention needs. Estimate space using your own output settings and retention period, and verify actual files rather than relying on a generic capacity estimate.
- Network and stream health: A local replay clip can save correctly even when the YouTube stream is unhealthy, so monitor both the OBS status and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends testing before a real broadcast; see YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
Plan separately for a 24/7 archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete recording. If preserving the full program matters, arrange a separate local archive or other capture method and verify that it is creating usable files. See YouTube’s guidance on live stream archives.

Its Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream may be interrupted or terminated if a match remains; YouTube also says licensed third-party content may still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner where applicable. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Confirm that your rights cover the live broadcast, the territories you serve, and any archive or saved clips you plan to publish.
- For licensed third-party music, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be allowlisted through Content ID.
- YouTube identifies music and sound effects in its Audio Library as copyright-safe for YouTube. Check each track’s terms and intended live use. If a Creative Commons track requires attribution, put the specified credit in the video description.
- For an Indian music catalog, do not assume a single permission covers every composition, recording, territory, or use. Confirm the applicable rights with the music owners or qualified counsel; the platform guidance does not establish the licensing requirements for a specific catalog.
Troubleshoot common Replay Buffer problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Save hotkey does nothing | The buffer has not been enabled or started, the key binding conflicts with another control, or the save destination is unavailable. | Check Settings > Output for Replay Buffer, confirm the buffer is running, review Settings > Hotkeys, and verify the recording path and free space. |
| No clip appears where expected | The recording path points elsewhere, the destination is full or inaccessible, or the save did not complete. | Recheck OBS’s recording path, inspect available storage, and make a short test save before relying on the feature. |
| Streaming becomes unstable when buffering or recording | The combined workload may exceed the computer’s or connection’s capacity; recording quality or a separate encoder can add resource use. | Test the stream and buffer together, monitor encoder load and dropped frames, and reduce the workload or revise settings one change at a time. |
| YouTube interrupts the live stream despite a music license | The relevant rights may not cover the use, or the channel may not be allowlisted for Content ID where needed. | Contact the rights owner to verify live-use coverage and allowlisting; review YouTube’s copyright guidance. |
| The full 24/7 broadcast is missing from YouTube archives | YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. | Use a separate, verified full-show archive plan rather than relying on automatic archiving. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Replay Buffer is for local clips. If your goal is to keep pre-recorded music playing as a continuous YouTube stream without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
