How to Add Silence to a Video with FFmpeg for YouTube Live

To add a silent audio track to a video with no audio, use FFmpeg’s anullsrc audio source and explicitly map it alongside the video. For a finite output file, this command is a starting point:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4
  -f lavfi -i anullsrc=r=44100:cl=stereo
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
  -c:v copy -c:a aac -shortest output.mp4

Input 0 is the video; input 1 is generated silence. The maps select the first video stream and the first silent audio stream. This creates a file, not a complete live-stream command. A YouTube live output also needs a protocol-specific destination and settings.

What the command does

anullsrc generates silent audio. The -map options determine which streams FFmpeg sends to the output: 0:v:0 selects the first video stream in the first input, while 1:a:0 selects the first audio stream in the second input, which is the generated silence. FFmpeg documents explicit mapping, including mapping streams from separate inputs; its filter reference documents anullsrc and its sample-rate and channel-layout options (FFmpeg stream selection; FFmpeg filter reference: anullsrc).

-c:v copy copies the video without re-encoding it. -c:a aac encodes the silent audio as AAC. -shortest is appropriate here because this is a finite file: it ends when the finite video ends instead of continuing with the unbounded silent source. Check the command against your installed FFmpeg build and intended container.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the right mapping for your source

Video has no audio

Use the example’s explicit maps. They select the video and generated silence, so the output contains the audio track YouTube expects rather than relying on automatic stream selection.

Video has audio you want to replace

Keep the same maps: -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0. Do not map the original input’s audio stream. This makes the output consist of the source video and the generated silent track, not the original audio plus silence.

FFmpeg says no audio stream was selected

Check the input order and stream indexes. In the example, the video is input 0 and the lavfi silent source is input 1; therefore the generated track is 1:a:0. A wrong input index or map can leave the output without the intended audio.

Adapt the audio settings to YouTube’s ingest protocol

RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommended advanced settings for stereo are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; these are YouTube recommendations, not universal FFmpeg defaults. The file example uses a 44.1 kHz stereo silent source and AAC, but it does not set the audio bitrate and is not itself a live command. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transmission. Check the current encoder guidance for the rest of your chosen output settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

HLS

Do not apply RTMP/RTMPS output assumptions to HLS. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies muxed audio and video in M2TS, AAC audio, and additional transport and segment requirements. An MP4 file-muxing command is not a complete HLS stream. Follow YouTube’s HLS-specific instructions for your output: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.

Build and test the live output safely

  1. Choose the protocol first. Use YouTube’s requirements for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS as applicable; their container and transport expectations differ.
  2. Add one intended audio stream. If the source has no audio, map the generated silent track. YouTube’s live error guidance says an ingest with no audio needs an audio stream and warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingest problems. Avoid mapping extra audio tracks: Live streaming error messages.
  3. Keep credentials private. Use the destination and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room in your actual live command or encoder configuration. Do not paste a stream key into a public post, screenshot, or example.
  4. Inspect the output. Use ffprobe or a media inspector to confirm the intended video stream and exactly one audio stream are present. Check the selected codec and audio settings against the protocol’s YouTube guidance.
  5. Test before going live. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the outgoing feed includes audio. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See its encoder settings guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Output has no audio: verify that the lavfi input is second and that the map is 1:a:0. Explicitly map both the video and generated audio.
  • Original audio is still present: remove any map selecting the source’s audio. Map only 0:v:0 and 1:a:0 when replacing it with silence.
  • File never finishes: for a finite file workflow, bound the unending silent source with -shortest or an explicit duration suitable for the task. Do not copy this finite-file option blindly into a long-running live output.
  • YouTube reports an audio problem: check that the output has one audio stream, then verify codec, sample rate, container, and transport against the specific ingest protocol. HLS and RTMP/RTMPS do not share identical output requirements.
  • Stream health is unclear: inspect the output with ffprobe or a media inspector, then run a test in YouTube Live Control Room before the intended broadcast.
