How to Loop Multiple Prerecorded Videos in a YouTube Livestream from a VPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop several prerecorded videos in a YouTube livestream from a VPS, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, feed it an explicitly ordered playlist or concat input, and send the resulting live feed to the ingest URL and stream key for your YouTube Live event. Use FFmpeg’s -re to pace file playback and -stream_loop -1 to repeat the intended input indefinitely—but those options do not, by themselves, arrange multiple files or guarantee seamless joins. Test the actual media and connection before relying on an unattended stream.

What the VPS does—and what it does not do

The VPS runs FFmpeg, reads the video files, and uploads the encoded output to YouTube. It must sustain the workload for your chosen output and maintain a stable upload connection. Requirements vary with whether you copy or re-encode the media, output resolution, concurrent streams, and the host’s network limits. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not establish a universal CPU, memory, or bandwidth minimum, so size and test an instance against your actual workload rather than relying on a generic specification.

A VPS does not grant permission to rebroadcast the media, supervise a failed process automatically, or guarantee uninterrupted delivery. Those require separate rights checks, monitoring and recovery design, and testing.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the livestream

  1. Confirm eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; users must be at least 16. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Check the account’s current status and regional details in YouTube Studio.
  2. Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to broadcast. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection flow and notes that an encoder converts video into a digital format for YouTube.
  3. Protect the key. Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put it in a public script repository, shell history, screenshots, or logs. Store it in a restricted configuration or secret store, and rotate it if exposed. These are security precautions; YouTube’s guide establishes that the key is needed, not a specific secret-storage method.

Inventory and sequence your video files

Before writing a command, inspect the files you intend to play. Record their video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and durations. Decide their order and how the sequence should repeat. FFmpeg’s loop option applies to an input; it does not define the order of a collection of separate files.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Choose a playlist or concat strategy. Build an explicit sequence first, then configure the playback workflow to repeat that sequence. The right method depends on the files and the installed FFmpeg build.
  • Check compatibility. Matching codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, and timestamps can make a sequence easier to handle. If files differ, test the transitions and audio continuity with the exact workflow you plan to use.
  • Do not assume gapless playback. The official FFmpeg documentation describes the relevant options, but does not certify one universal multi-file command or seamless transitions for arbitrary files. A successful short test is more useful than assuming a concat setup will work.

Build and test the FFmpeg workflow

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as looping an input indefinitely and -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate. Real-time pacing matters when sending a file to a live output: without it, processing can run as fast as the server permits instead of following the media timeline. These are input options, so place them before the corresponding -i.

For one file, the conceptual command shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i video.mp4 ... OUTPUT

This is a template, not a complete command: the stream mapping, codecs, output format, and destination must match the file, installed FFmpeg build, and YouTube’s current requirements. For multiple files, establish the playlist or concat input first and loop that sequence using a method suited to those files. Do not copy a single-file command and assume that it automatically sequences a directory.

Choose stream copy or re-encoding

  • Stream copy avoids encoding work when the media already fits the output requirements. It may not behave smoothly if codecs, timestamps, or other file properties are incompatible.
  • Re-encoding gives you more control over output compatibility but consumes VPS CPU or supported hardware-encoding resources. Confirm that the server can sustain the selected settings.

Use FFmpeg options supported by the build installed on your VPS. Check the output locally or with a private test stream before using the workflow for a long broadcast.

Set YouTube-compatible output and connect the VPS

YouTube publishes the supported encoder settings and recommends constant bitrate encoding with a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Select bitrate for the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec using the current YouTube live encoder settings, rather than reusing a number without checking that it fits your output.

Where supported by your encoder and workflow, prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends it and describes it as encrypting data to and through Google’s servers; see its RTMPS guidance. Use the server URL and key for the specific Live Control Room stream you created, and verify the destination and key before starting FFmpeg.

  1. Install or select an FFmpeg build that supports the required input and output codecs and protocol.
  2. Configure the ordered media input, playback loop, stream mapping, output encoding settings, and YouTube destination.
  3. Keep the stream key out of command history and visible logs. If your chosen FFmpeg configuration requires the destination to contain the key, restrict access to the configuration and VPS account.
  4. Start FFmpeg and watch its output for input errors, timestamp problems, and connection failures.
  5. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview or connection status. If the event is scheduled and requires it, use the Studio control to go live.
  6. Observe the stream through at least one full sequence, including transitions and the point where the playlist repeats.

Keep the stream running and plan recovery

-re controls input pacing; it is not a network retry, process supervisor, or recovery system. A VPS reboot, FFmpeg crash, lost connection, or exhausted resource can stop the feed. Arrange monitoring that can detect a stopped process or disconnected ingest, and separately design and test any restart behavior. The YouTube encoder workflow does not guarantee recovery from VPS, process, or network failures.

Check rights and platform rules

Confirm that you have rights to every video, music track, image, and other element in the broadcast. YouTube states: “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” A technically successful loop does not establish that you have rebroadcast rights, comply with every platform rule, or qualify for monetization. YouTube’s general guidance does not provide a blanket ruling for every kind of repeated prerecorded broadcast or its monetization.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg connects, but playback races through the file The input is not paced in real time. Put -re before the relevant -i and confirm playback follows the media timeline.
Only one video plays, or the order is wrong The input workflow loops a file rather than an explicitly ordered multi-file sequence. Check the playlist or concat input and verify the sequence before enabling repeat.
Black frames, silence, or errors at file boundaries Files may differ in streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or timestamps; the chosen sequence method may not handle them as expected. Inspect each file and test the actual transitions. Do not assume arbitrary files join seamlessly.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview The event may be ineligible or not enabled yet, or the encoder may be using the wrong server URL, key, protocol, or output settings. Check Live Control Room status, account eligibility, the stream-specific URL and key, and current YouTube encoder settings.
The stream drops when the VPS process or connection fails Input pacing does not provide process or network recovery. Check FFmpeg and VPS logs, resource use, and connectivity; add separately tested monitoring and restart handling.
The VPS cannot sustain the output Re-encoding workload or outbound network demand exceeds what the instance can maintain. Check whether stream copy is suitable, review the selected output settings, and test the actual sustained workload. No universal instance minimum is established by the cited sources.
