The Xbox PC app is available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs, and supported games can be downloaded for local play. But app availability is not a promise that every PC game will install, work online, or run well on every Arm device: compatibility depends on the individual game, its anti-cheat and other software, and the PC’s hardware.
What Microsoft’s announcement changes
On January 21, 2026, Microsoft announced that the Xbox PC app was available on all Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. That removes an app-level barrier for owners of Snapdragon and other Arm Windows computers: they can use the app to browse games and download supported PC titles instead of relying only on streaming. Microsoft’s announcement is at Windows Experience Blog; an overview also appeared in the Xbox January update.
Microsoft said more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with Arm-based Windows 11 PCs when it made that January 2026 announcement. Treat that as a dated Microsoft estimate, not a guarantee for today’s catalog or for your region, plan, or particular device. Game availability and features can vary by region, plan, platform, and time, as Xbox notes on its PC Game Pass page.
App availability is not the same as game compatibility
There are four separate questions to check: whether the app installs, whether a particular game can be installed and launched, whether it performs acceptably on your hardware, and whether its online features work. A game can pass one test and fail another. For example, a title might launch but run slowly, or its anti-cheat system might prevent multiplayer.

- App: Microsoft says the Xbox PC app is available on all Arm-based Windows 11 PCs.
- Game: Local installation is limited to supported PC titles. A game offered through a console or cloud catalog is not necessarily a locally installable PC game.
- Performance: Playability depends on the PC’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, cooling, power mode, drivers, and the game’s demands.
- Online features: Anti-cheat, a separate launcher, account linking, or other game-specific services can impose additional requirements.
In other words, the announcement concerns access to the Xbox PC app and a growing set of compatible games; it does not mean every Xbox game or every Windows PC game has an Arm-native version.
How games run: native Arm and Prism emulation
Some games are built for Arm processors. Others are x86 or x64 games that Windows runs through Prism, its emulation layer for Arm-based PCs. Emulation lets existing software run without a native Arm build, but it does not guarantee compatibility or match the performance and efficiency of software designed for the hardware.
Microsoft said Prism gained AVX and AVX2 support to expand compatibility with more games. That support helps with certain software requirements; it does not establish that every game using those instructions will work. A title can still depend on unsupported drivers, copy protection, a separate launcher, or other components.

Why anti-cheat can make or break multiplayer
Getting a game executable to launch is not enough when a title relies on anti-cheat software. That component must also support the platform and its emulation environment. Microsoft said Epic Easy Anti-Cheat support enables selected games on Arm-based Windows 11, naming Fortnite and Gears of War: Reloaded as examples. This does not mean every Easy Anti-Cheat game works, and it says nothing conclusive about games using different anti-cheat systems. Check the individual game’s current information for multiplayer support.
Check a game before installing or buying it
- Find the PC version. In the Xbox app, check that the listing is for a PC game available in your region, rather than a console-only or cloud-only offering.
- Look for the install option. If local installation is offered, it is a useful first check, but it is not proof of native Arm compilation or acceptable performance.
- Review the game’s requirements. Compare its minimum and recommended requirements with your device, including graphics, memory, Windows version, storage, and any listed launcher or anti-cheat requirements.
- Check performance guidance. Microsoft describes Windows Performance Fit as guidance about which titles should play well on a device based on its hardware. Treat it as a decision aid, not a benchmark guarantee: thermals, power mode, drivers, external displays, background work, and later game patches can affect results.
- Confirm multiplayer separately. If online play matters, check the developer’s current requirements and anti-cheat support, as well as any launcher, account-linking, or cross-play requirements.
- Consider cloud play if local play is unavailable. Cloud Gaming is a different way to play, not a fix that makes the local game compatible. Access depends on a supported plan and region, and the experience needs a suitable internet connection.
Install the Xbox PC app
Xbox lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of storage for the app, and a 720p display as baseline app requirements. Those figures are for the app—not a promise that a game will run or that the PC has enough storage for it. Individual games can require substantially more storage and stronger hardware. See the official Xbox PC app page for current requirements and download access.
- Open the Xbox app for PC page and select Download the app.
- Install the app, or update it if it is already on your PC.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your owned games or Game Pass subscription.
- Browse your library or the available PC games, then open a title’s listing to check its requirements and availability.
- Select Install for a supported local title. If local installation is not offered, check whether cloud play is available for that game and your account.
Xbox says Windows S mode may need to be disabled to play games through the app. Leaving S mode is generally a one-way change, so review Microsoft’s current Windows support guidance and consider the consequences before switching.

Local installation and cloud gaming compared

The Xbox app also supports features such as browsing games and managing gaming activity. The app’s presence does not itself provide a Game Pass subscription or cloud access.
Do you need Game Pass?
No subscription is required just to download the Xbox PC app. You can use it with eligible PC games you own; Game Pass is sold separately for access to its subscription catalog. The PC Game Pass page describes a PC game library, selected day-one releases, EA Play benefits, and discounts, subject to the plan and catalog. Subscription access is not permanent ownership: a game’s availability can change, and access through the catalog requires an active subscription.

That was the US price shown at that time, not a worldwide or permanent rate; current prices, promotions, taxes, and availability depend on location and can change. Is an Arm PC a good choice for Xbox gaming?
An Arm Windows PC can suit someone who values a portable, battery-conscious laptop for everyday work and wants to play compatible games or use cloud gaming as well. It is a less certain choice when a particular multiplayer title, extensive mod support, high-end graphics settings, or competitive performance is essential.
If you are buying primarily to play a specific game, verify that game’s local and online compatibility on the exact device before purchasing. The Xbox app’s availability is not equivalent to the broad compatibility of a traditional x86/x64 gaming PC, and Microsoft’s general announcement does not establish performance equivalence across Arm processors or PC designs.
Troubleshoot common problems
The app installs, but the game is unavailable
Check whether the title has a PC version and is currently available in your region and plan. It may be offered only for console or cloud play, may have left Game Pass, or may require a newer Windows version or hardware feature. Xbox notes that catalog availability varies by region, plan, platform, and time on its PC Game Pass page.

The game launches but runs poorly
- Connect the PC to power and check whether battery-saving mode is limiting performance.
- Install available Windows and graphics-driver updates.
- Try a lower resolution or graphics preset, especially if the game is rendering at the display’s native resolution.
- Close demanding background apps and check available memory and storage.
- Compare the game’s requirements with the device and consider whether it is running under Prism emulation.
Multiplayer will not connect
Check the game’s current anti-cheat and launcher requirements, the developer’s support information, Xbox network status, and any required account linking or cross-play settings. Support for one anti-cheat system or one named game does not establish support for all multiplayer titles.
Windows S mode blocks play
Xbox says switching out of S mode may be required. Because leaving it is generally one-way, consult current Microsoft support instructions for your Windows edition before making that change.
