You can stream a recorded worship service to YouTube Live from a Windows desktop using an encoder such as OBS: activate livestreaming, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, enter its stream URL and key in the encoder, then preview and monitor playback. For a broadcast that runs all day, plan for the desktop and internet connection to stay available, keep a local recording backup, and account for YouTube’s archive and DVR limits on streams over 12 hours.
Before you set up the stream
- Confirm the channel can livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- Choose an operator and a monitoring plan. A desktop encoder workflow depends on the playback computer, its connection, and someone checking that the stream remains healthy. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube Live streaming tips
- Confirm rights to everything in the recording. The cited setup guidance cannot establish whether your church has permission to stream or rebroadcast a particular service, music performance, or other included material. Check the applicable licenses and agreements for the recording before going live.
Set up a Windows desktop encoder
- Install and configure an encoder. OBS is among the encoders listed by YouTube. Use the Windows desktop to play the recorded service and route its playback into the encoder. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a particular Windows capture method, so select and test a source arrangement that captures the service’s picture and sound on your machine. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Create the YouTube encoder stream. Open YouTube Studio and use the Live Control Room to create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter the stream details in the encoder. In the encoder’s stream settings, select the YouTube-compatible server/URL option and enter the copied URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or public instructions. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.
- Set and test encoding. YouTube’s common encoder recommendations include RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a bitrate the church’s upload connection can sustain reliably; do not select a high value just because it is available. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance to check the appropriate settings for the resolution you intend to send.
- Start a private test and inspect the preview. Start sending from the encoder, then wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that both picture and audio are present and intelligible before relying on the public event. YouTube recommends testing the setup beforehand and monitoring the signal during the stream. YouTube Live streaming tips
- Start service playback and keep watch. Once the preview is correct, begin the recorded service playback and verify that the event is accessible as intended. During the broadcast, monitor the Live Control Room and the local machine rather than assuming that an encoder still open on screen means viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Plan for an all-day broadcast and its recording
YouTube’s archive guidance distinguishes streams shorter than 12 hours from longer ones: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream beyond 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local archive backup. Its DVR guidance also warns that DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a complete YouTube replay or unrestricted rewind for a broadcast that passes that threshold. See Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.
- Enable a local recording/archive backup before going live, and check that the local file is growing during the test and broadcast.
- Make sure the computer has enough available storage for the local backup; YouTube does not specify a drive type or capacity in the cited archive guidance.
- Keep the desktop awake and the encoder and playback running for the intended duration. The cited YouTube setup material does not specify Windows power settings, minimum PC specifications, or a guaranteed unattended restart procedure; test the church’s actual setup rather than assuming a particular configuration will work.
- For a broadcast expected to exceed 12 hours, plan a local archive as the dependable copy and tell viewers about replay/rewind limitations if relevant.
Choose between a desktop workflow and cloud hosting
The Windows-plus-encoder method gives the church direct control over playback and the outgoing signal, but the computer, playback, internet connection, backup, and monitoring remain the church’s responsibility. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC; verify that service’s current details before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder guide

Troubleshoot common problems
- Livestreaming is not available yet: verify the channel and check for a livestreaming restriction in the past 90 days. If this is its first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The Live Control Room has no preview: check that the encoder is sending to the URL for the correct stream and that the corresponding stream key was entered correctly. Restart the encoder connection after correcting the settings, then wait for the preview before proceeding.
- The preview appears but service audio is missing or unclear: check the encoder’s selected playback/audio source and listen to the preview. The YouTube documentation recommends testing and monitoring, but does not prescribe a Windows capture configuration; verify the signal path on the actual desktop.
- The picture or stream is unstable: test a lower bitrate that the upload connection can sustain, and confirm CBR, H.264, and the two-second keyframe interval. A bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity can undermine continuity.
- The local archive is not being saved: check that local recording is enabled in the encoder and that the destination has available storage; confirm the file grows during a test instead of discovering a failed backup after the event.
- The YouTube replay is incomplete or rewind is unavailable: streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured in full, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Use the local archive as the backup rather than relying on YouTube to preserve the entire long stream.
