The dependable way to add Stripe to a WordPress store is to run WooCommerce and install the official WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway extension. You connect the extension from WooCommerce > Settings > Payments, finish the account connection in Stripe’s hosted flow, let the setup configure webhooks, then test checkout in Stripe test mode before accepting live payments.

What you need before installing Stripe
Stripe is a payment processor; WordPress itself does not provide a complete Stripe checkout. On WordPress, the supported, documented commerce route in this guide is WooCommerce with WooCommerce’s official Stripe Payment Gateway extension.
A WooCommerce store
Install and configure WooCommerce first, including products, prices, tax rules, shipping and checkout pages. The Stripe extension adds payment processing to that existing store rather than replacing WooCommerce’s catalog and order system.

A Stripe-supported business location
Stripe account availability is country-specific. Confirm that your business can open a Stripe account in a supported country before spending time on integration. Eligibility, settlement currencies and available payment methods can vary by country.
Current software
Use recent, compatible versions of PHP, WordPress and WooCommerce. The exact minimum versions can change, so check the extension’s current requirements when you install it rather than relying on an old tutorial.
HTTPS and SSL
Checkout must be served over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. HTTPS protects payment-session traffic and is a prerequisite for the integration. If your site still loads over plain HTTP, obtain and activate an SSL certificate and make sure WordPress uses the HTTPS site address before configuring payments.
Administrative access
You need WordPress administrator access to install the extension and change WooCommerce payment settings, plus permission to create or connect the business’s Stripe account. Keep the Stripe account owner or finance administrator available for verification and payout decisions.
Install the official WooCommerce Stripe extension
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Install the official WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway extension using the current distribution and installation instructions for your store.
- After activation, open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
- Select Stripe and click Complete setup.
The extension’s connection flow takes you to Stripe’s hosted account process. You can create a new Stripe account there or connect an existing one. Using the hosted flow keeps sensitive account authentication in Stripe rather than asking you to paste secret credentials into an arbitrary WordPress form.

Finish the hosted connection
Follow the prompts to identify the business, authorize the connection and return to WooCommerce. If you already have a Stripe account, select the option to connect it; do not create a second account accidentally.

Let the integration set up webhooks
Webhooks are part of the documented connection setup. They allow Stripe events—such as a completed payment or refund—to reach WooCommerce so the corresponding order and payment status can be updated. Complete the webhook step instead of treating it as optional.
After returning to WordPress, check the Stripe connection status in the payment settings. If the dashboard reports that webhooks are missing or unhealthy, repair that connection before taking live orders; a checkout can appear to succeed while WooCommerce fails to receive the event needed to mark the order paid.
Where Stripe settings live after connection
Once the account and webhooks are connected, open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe to configure the gateway. The extension controls which supported payment methods are offered at checkout and how the gateway behaves in WooCommerce.
Account-level controls belong in the Stripe Dashboard. For example, Radar rules are managed in Stripe rather than in the WooCommerce payment screen. Use the WooCommerce settings for store-side checkout choices and the Stripe Dashboard for account, risk and payment-processing controls.

Which payment methods can customers use?
The extension can expose more than card fields, but availability is conditional. Stripe, your account country, the transaction currency, customer location and your configuration determine which methods can actually appear.

The WordPress.org plugin listing publishes a figure of 23 payment methods. A current Stripe Marketplace listing publishes 24+ payment methods in 45+ countries. Treat those as listing figures, not a promise that every store will see that number: the two listings describe availability at different points and payment-method eligibility is account-specific.

Transaction fees are set by Stripe, not WooCommerce. Review the rates and payout terms shown for your Stripe account and country before setting product prices or estimating margins.
Configure the checkout experience
Choose methods your customers can actually use
Enable only methods that fit your target countries, currencies and products. A method can be technically available in the extension but absent for a particular shopper because the shopper’s location, device, currency or eligibility does not match.

Do not disable webhooks while experimenting with checkout design. WooCommerce relies on the event connection to receive payment outcomes and update orders. After changing settings, place a test order and confirm that the order status changes as expected.
Separate WooCommerce and Stripe responsibilities
- Use WooCommerce’s Stripe settings to manage the gateway and checkout payment methods.
- Use the Stripe Dashboard for account-level controls such as Radar rules.
- Use WooCommerce orders for the store’s fulfillment workflow and Stripe for processor-side payment details, disputes and account reporting.
Test Stripe before accepting real payments
Do not switch directly from installation to live mode. Use a Stripe test account or Stripe test mode to exercise the complete path first. Test mode is designed for simulated payments and does not charge a customer’s real card.
- Enable or select Stripe’s test mode in the connected WooCommerce Stripe settings.
- Run a checkout with Stripe’s documented test payment details, not a real card.
- Confirm that WooCommerce creates the order and assigns the expected payment and order status.
- Exercise a successful payment and at least one failed-payment scenario.
- Process a test refund and verify the refund event and order record.
- Test every express or local method you intend to enable, where the method’s test environment supports it.
- Review the Stripe test Dashboard and WooCommerce logs for matching events.
- Only after the results are correct, switch the connection to live mode and make a small controlled live transaction if your operating procedure allows it.
What a useful test plan checks
- Successful payment: the customer receives the expected confirmation, the WooCommerce order is marked paid and fulfillment can proceed.
- Failed payment: the checkout explains that payment failed, the order is not incorrectly treated as paid and the customer can retry.
- Refund: a refund issued through the intended workflow appears in both Stripe and the WooCommerce order history.
- Webhook delivery: payment and refund events arrive without manual status edits.
- Alternative methods: wallets, local methods and buy-now-pay-later options display only where eligible and return a usable order result.
Switch from test mode to live payments
Before going live, verify the site is still on HTTPS, the correct Stripe account is connected and the product, tax, shipping and email settings are production-ready. Then disable test mode or select the live connection in the Stripe gateway settings, following the current extension instructions.
Recheck the live-mode webhook status after switching. Test and live environments use separate credentials and event data; a webhook that worked in test mode does not prove the live connection is correctly configured.

Make the first live payment with a controlled order and watch both the WooCommerce order screen and Stripe Dashboard. Confirm the amount, currency, payment status and payout reporting before directing substantial traffic to the checkout.

Stripe does not appear under Payments
Confirm that WooCommerce is installed and active, the Stripe extension is activated, and you are looking under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. If the extension is not listed, check that the installed package is the official WooCommerce extension and that its current requirements are met.
The connection flow will not complete
Check administrator permissions, browser pop-up or redirect blocking and the Stripe account’s country eligibility. Start the hosted connection again and ensure you return to the same WordPress site that initiated it.
Webhooks are missing or orders stay pending
Return to the Stripe settings screen and inspect the connection or webhook status. Resolve the reported webhook issue before processing live orders. Also check that the site is reachable over HTTPS and that a security, caching or firewall layer is not blocking incoming webhook requests.

Check the method’s eligibility in the Stripe Dashboard and WooCommerce settings, then compare the shopper’s country and the order currency with the method’s requirements. A method listed by the extension is not automatically available for every account or checkout.
A test payment was treated as real, or a real payment was rejected
Verify the mode shown in WooCommerce and Stripe before entering payment details. Test credentials work only in test mode; real credentials and customer cards belong in live mode. Never use a real card to troubleshoot a test checkout.

Order status and Stripe status disagree
Check webhook delivery first, then compare the event and order timestamps in Stripe and WooCommerce. Avoid manually marking an order paid until you understand the missing event, because doing so can create fulfillment and reconciliation errors.
Maintenance and compatibility warning
WooCommerce documentation includes this dated notice: After July 1, 2025, Stripe and WooCommerce will no longer be making important performance and feature enhancements to this integration.
That statement does not remove the need to keep the extension installed and configured correctly, but it does make maintenance planning important.
Before upgrading WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP or the Stripe extension, read the current compatibility notes and changelog. Recheck payment-method availability, webhook health and test-mode behavior after significant updates. Payment methods, country support and compatibility can change over time.
Choosing an implementation route
For a WooCommerce store, the official extension is the documented route covered here. A different WordPress project—such as a site without WooCommerce or one requiring a bespoke checkout—needs a separate integration decision and technical review. Do not install a WooCommerce gateway on a site that has no WooCommerce order and checkout system.

- Cards and each selected alternative method have been tested where test support exists.

- Stripe fees and payout timing have been included in pricing and cash-flow plans.
- Live mode is enabled only after test results are satisfactory.

Can I add Stripe without WooCommerce?
This guide covers the documented WooCommerce integration. A WordPress site without WooCommerce needs a different Stripe implementation, with its own cart, order, webhook and security design.
Does WooCommerce set Stripe’s transaction fees?
No. Stripe determines transaction fees for the connected account. Rates and eligibility vary by country and account, so check the terms shown in your Stripe Dashboard.
