Add and save your subtitle track in YouTube Studio first, then schedule the video and select Set as Premiere. You can upload a timed subtitle file, sync a transcript, type captions manually, or review automatic captions when they are available.
Add subtitles to the video in YouTube Studio
- Upload or open the video. Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the video, or open the video that is already in your channel. You can work with subtitles during upload or afterward in the dedicated Subtitles area. YouTube’s subtitle and caption instructions describe the Studio workflow.
- Open the subtitle track controls. From the left menu, select Subtitles, select the video, choose Add language, and select the language of the track. Under Subtitles, choose Add.
- Choose how to create the track. Pick the method that matches what you have ready:
Upload a subtitle file
Choose Upload file if you have a prepared caption or subtitle file. YouTube’s upload flow asks whether the file includes timing. Timed files contain text aligned to timestamps; some formats can also include position and style information. Because the current help instructions do not enumerate every supported extension, follow the format prompt shown in Studio rather than assuming a particular file type is accepted.
Auto-sync a transcript
Choose Auto-sync to enter or upload a transcript and let YouTube align it to the video. The transcript must match the spoken language, and that language must be supported by YouTube speech recognition. YouTube cautions that auto-sync is not recommended for videos longer than an hour or videos with poor audio quality. When the timing process finishes, which can take a few minutes, YouTube says the transcript is automatically published.
Type captions manually
Choose Type manually to enter captions as the video plays. YouTube sets the timings automatically. Include relevant non-speech sounds, such as applause or thunder, where they help viewers understand what is happening.

Review automatic captions
YouTube may generate automatic captions through speech recognition; the cited help instructions say these are in the video’s default language. Availability and accuracy can vary, so review the result for mistakes and omissions before relying on it as the finished track.
- Save or publish the track. Complete the action shown by the chosen subtitle workflow—such as Save or Publish—before moving on to Premiere setup. For auto-sync, allow time for processing and check that the track has appeared in Studio.
Schedule the video as a Premiere
- In YouTube Studio, upload the video or select the uploaded video and choose Schedule.
- Enter the date and time you want the Premiere to start.
- Check Set as Premiere, complete any Premiere setup options, then choose Schedule or Done as shown in the interface. YouTube’s Premiere setup instructions cover the scheduling flow.
The Premiere creates a public watch page before the start time. You can share that page so viewers can set reminders, comment, and chat. You do not need to wait for the Premiere to begin to add subtitles; prepare and save the track, then schedule the video.

Check eligibility and timing before you announce it
Confirm the video format is eligible
YouTube’s Premiere help page lists Shorts, 360/VR180 video, and output above 1080p as unsupported for Premieres. If the video falls into one of those categories, schedule it as a regular video instead or prepare an eligible version.
Leave time for the watch page
YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours ahead so audiences around the world have an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. This is a platform tip, not a guarantee of reach or attendance. YouTube Premiere tips also explain countdown customization.

Account for strikes and delegated caption work
A Community Guidelines strike can prevent a scheduled Premiere from publishing during the penalty period; YouTube says it must be rescheduled after that period. If someone else is preparing the subtitles, YouTube’s Subtitle Editor role gives access only to the Subtitles section. The channel owner or manager must set the video language for an editor to work on it, and this role is unavailable when using a Brand Account. See YouTube channel permissions information.
Customize the Premiere if you need to
YouTube offers countdown themes and lengths. A trailer has additional eligibility and content requirements: the cited help page requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; it specifies a trailer length of 15 seconds to 3 minutes and recommends matching the main video’s aspect ratio and resolution. Check YouTube’s Premiere customization guidance for the current options and requirements.
