Why “free VM” does not mean a free 24/7 stream
Outbound data is a separate constraint
A cloud server sending a live feed to YouTube continuously uses outbound network transfer. Check the provider’s current egress terms and calculate your expected usage from the actual stream bitrate and hours online before committing to a setup. As a rough decimal calculation, each 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days at 24 hours a day carries about 324 GB of data, before protocol overhead. This makes Google’s listed 1 GB monthly allowance a poor basis for assuming a continuous stream will be free.
Compute and network performance must fit your method
A VM that can be allocated is not automatically capable of the work you ask it to do. The resources required depend on whether your setup encodes video on the VM or relays an already prepared stream, as well as the chosen resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio. Confirm the instance’s available compute, storage, outbound limits, and sustained upload performance for your exact workload. Neither cloud allocation described here guarantees a particular route, throughput, or uninterrupted stream.

Availability and recovery are part of the cost
OCI says an “out of host capacity” error means there is a temporary lack of Always Free shapes in your home region. That can prevent provisioning even when the allocation exists on paper. OCI also documents that idle Always Free instances may be reclaimed under specified utilization criteria. Plan how you will monitor a stream, notice a stopped process, restart it, and recover if the VM or YouTube connection drops. “24/7” is an operating goal, not an uptime guarantee from these free allocations.
What to check before choosing a free cloud VM
- Confirm the region you can actually use. OCI Always Free compute must be created in your tenancy’s home region. Google’s listed free e2-micro VM is restricted to specified US regions. Do not assume that a nearby region is available or that geographical proximity proves good routing to YouTube.
- Estimate the stream’s monthly outbound data. Use the stream bitrate and intended uptime, then compare the result with the provider’s current free allowance and any applicable network limits. Account for overhead and verify the terms for your account and region.
- Choose the playback and encoding approach. Decide whether the VM will encode the video or relay an already prepared feed. Match the instance’s CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity to that method; the published free quotas alone do not confirm that a particular stream will run well.
- Check the account and allocation conditions. Verify current eligibility, billing requirements, region, available capacity, free-tier limits, and the provider’s rules for reclaiming idle resources before relying on the machine.
- Build a recovery plan before going live. Decide how you will detect a dropped stream, restart playback, and confirm that the stream is live again. Test with the actual media and settings rather than treating VM creation as proof of a stable 24/7 setup.
- Clear rights for the exact recording. A cloud provider only supplies infrastructure; it does not grant permission to stream music. Confirm rights before broadcasting.
Music rights: a required check, not an optional extra
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the streamer to have all necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants, and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. A cloud VM, a playlist, or a live-stream tool does not supply those rights.

Creator Music does not clear a livestream
YouTube’s Creator Music guidance says tracks available through Creator Music are for long-form videos, not Shorts or live streams. A Creator Music license should not be treated as permission to use that track in a continuous livestream.
Check the recording, not just the composition
A traditional, devotional, or old composition does not automatically make a particular recording free to broadcast. A modern recording may carry separate rights. YouTube’s broad copyright guidance says public-domain duration generally varies by region and is often life of the author plus 50–70 years; it also says uploaders are responsible for verifying public-domain status and does not provide an official comprehensive list. That is not an India-specific legal determination. Verify the rights for the actual recording and the territories where the stream will be available.

Choose OCI if you specifically want to operate your own server and can accept home-region capacity uncertainty, instance management, and the need to verify egress and stream performance yourself. Treat Google Cloud’s credit as a time-limited trial, not as the basis for an indefinite free stream.
