To put cues on a live video’s playback timeline, generate timed metadata in a format your streaming pipeline supports, insert it during packaging, and handle it in a compatible player. For an HLS workflow, the documented pattern is ID3 metadata passed to a segmenter; a separate WebSocket message can drive app logic, but its arrival time alone does not synchronize it to the viewer’s playhead.
Choose between timeline metadata and application events
First decide whether a cue must line up with a moment in the video, or whether it only needs to reach your interactive application. These are different delivery paths:
- In-band timed metadata: The cue travels with the media timeline. In HLS, ID3 metadata can be associated with segments and playback positions, allowing a compatible player to act on a cue at the corresponding point.
- Out-of-band application event: A message arrives through a separate channel, such as a WebSocket. It can trigger application behavior, but network delivery time is not the same as playback time. Without a synchronization design, viewers may see the event early or late relative to the video.
If the cue must survive in a recording or replay, confirm that the packaging and recording path preserves it. Apple’s archived HLS guide says inserted metadata persists when a live broadcast is later repurposed as video on demand; verify that behavior in your current implementation.
How to add timed metadata to an HLS stream
- Define the cue and its timing. Decide what the player should do, what payload it needs, and where the cue belongs on the media timeline. Specify whether it occurs once, at a scheduled offset, or at an interval.
- Generate metadata in the supported format. Apple’s archived HLS guide describes creating ID3 data with
id3taggenerator. The guide is archived and names older tooling, so check current availability and compatibility before using it in production. - Pass the generated metadata to the segmenter. The documented Apple workflow sends the metadata output to the stream segmenter so it can be included in outbound media. Configure the insertion point or interval using the controls supported by your current segmenter and packaging pipeline.
- Make the player consume the cue. On playback, listen for metadata cues and use their timeline position to trigger the intended overlay or interaction. A player that receives the video but ignores its metadata will not render the cue-driven behavior.
- Test the full path. Validate generation, encoding, packaging, transport, and playback together. Check cue position at the player’s playhead, behavior after reconnects, and whether cues remain available in any recording or replay you support.
Apple’s current HLS landing page continues to list a dedicated “Timed Metadata for HTTP Live Streaming” document alongside authoring and low-latency resources: Apple HTTP Live Streaming. The concrete id3taggenerator instruction comes from Apple’s archived guide, not a claim that the same command or tool is current on every system.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cloudflare RealtimeKit’s documented interactive recording path
Cloudflare RealtimeKit documents a vendor-specific option for interactive recordings: metadata can be inserted programmatically through interactive_config in the Start recording API and delivered to HLS clients as ID3 tags. Its guide also describes sending data with broadcastMessage using ID3, then handling playback cues through a metadata text track. See Cloudflare RealtimeKit interactive recording for that product’s API and client flow.
This is not a general HLS guarantee. Confirm the relevant API configuration, track behavior, and player handling for the RealtimeKit version and clients you actually deploy.

YouTube Live
YouTube’s Live Streaming API overview covers broadcast and stream management as well as cuepoints for ad breaks. Those ad cuepoints are not evidence that arbitrary user-authored ID3 markers are accepted at ingest and exposed on viewers’ media timelines. The reviewed platform documentation does not establish that custom timed metadata path, so confirm it in current YouTube documentation or with a controlled integration before designing around it.
For YouTube’s documented HLS ingestion setup, the help page specifies segment durations between 1 and 4 seconds and notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it delivers video in segments. That latency matters when coordinating any separate interactive event with what viewers are watching. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Twitch EventSub
Twitch EventSub WebSockets deliver application notifications. Their message metadata includes fields such as a message timestamp and message type, which can support interactive application logic. The EventSub WebSocket documentation does not describe inserting those messages into the encoded video or synchronizing them to the playback position. If viewers need a cue aligned to the video, design and validate a media-timeline route separately. See Twitch: Handling WebSocket events.

- Playhead alignment: Can the client act on the cue’s media position, or only on when a message arrives?
- Replay behavior: Does the cue travel with the recording, or must an application service store and replay events separately?
- Latency and delivery: What delay, buffering, reconnect, and loss behavior does the chosen path introduce?
- End-to-end support: Do the encoder, segmenter or recording API, delivery platform, and player all support the same format and handling?
- Payload and client work: What format can be carried, and what parsing or rendering must the player implement?
- Recovery: What should happen if a cue is late, duplicated, or missing?
Run tests through the actual encode, package, transport, and playback route. A successful API call or a visible metadata track in one player does not establish precise synchronization across other clients.
