Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. To give a player a weapon directly, register it with an Item Granter. In either case, equip the weapon, stand beside the device, and drop it from the Player inventory to register it.
How to add a weapon as a map pickup
- Equip the weapon. In Create mode, open the Creative inventory, find the weapon under Weapons, and add it to your Player inventory or equipment bar.
- Place an Item Spawner. Open the Devices category and place the device where players should find the weapon. Registered items spawn just above the device. See Epic’s Item Spawner documentation.
- Register the weapon. Stand immediately beside the spawner, open the Player inventory, and drop the equipped weapon. Compatible devices automatically register dropped items; the weapon is stored by the device.
- Set the device behavior. Configure when the weapon first appears, how often it respawns, whether the device base is visible, and the pickup behavior. Available settings can vary with device behavior and Fortnite version.
- Check the island in Play mode. Confirm the weapon appears, players can pick it up, and the timing and pickup behavior match your design.
For a gallery or arena with different weapons at different locations or on different schedules, use separate spawners. Epic’s shooting-gallery example registers an assault rifle and a sniper rifle in separate devices.
Choose the device that matches how players should get the weapon
| Device | Where the weapon goes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Item Spawner | Appears in the game world for a player to pick up. | Map exploration, arena loot, or a weapon placed at a specific location. |
| Item Granter | Goes directly into a player’s inventory, or can be dropped near the player. | A starting loadout or a weapon awarded automatically or after another device triggers it. |
Epic recommends both devices for delivering weapons and other items; the deciding factor is whether players should collect the weapon from the map or receive it as inventory. See the Item Granter documentation.
How to register and configure an Item Granter
- Equip the desired weapon from the Creative inventory.
- Place an Item Granter, stand beside it, open the Player inventory, and drop the weapon to register it.
- Configure when the device grants the item and whether it goes into the player’s inventory or drops near them. You can trigger the grant automatically or through another device, depending on your setup.
- Test the grant in Play mode and verify the weapon arrives in the intended way.
If players should begin with a weapon, an Item Granter or a Team Settings & Inventory workflow may suit the design better than a world pickup.

Set weapon ammunition deliberately
The Item Spawner documentation lists Initial Weapon Ammo and Spare Weapon Ammo. Initial ammo can use the default or be overridden; the documented override range is 1–999, capped by the weapon’s magazine size. Spare ammo can also use its default or be overridden. The exact options shown may depend on the device behavior and current version.
Epic’s November 16, 2023 v27.10 release notes say Initial Weapon Ammo was added to several devices, including Item Spawner and Item Granter. They also record a then-known issue: setting certain weapons without standard ammunition, such as the Grappler, Harpoon Gun, or Plasma Cannon, to zero could make them nonfunctional. That is a version-specific historical warning, not confirmation that the issue persists in current Fortnite.

Common setup decisions
- Weapon should be found at a location: use an Item Spawner and configure its spawn and respawn timing.
- Weapon should be awarded to a player: use an Item Granter and choose its trigger and delivery behavior.
- Different weapons need different locations or schedules: register each weapon with its own spawner.
- Players need a particular amount of ammunition: review the device’s initial and spare ammo options, then test with the chosen weapon.
Fortnite’s device interfaces, settings, and available weapons can change with updates. If a setting or label differs from these steps, use the current in-game device panel and inventory as the authority.
