To make dialogue easier to hear or subtitles easier to read, open a game’s Settings or Options and check Audio, Audio & Subtitles, Language, and Accessibility. There is no universal menu path: available controls and labels vary by game, platform, version, and localization.
Where to find dialogue, subtitle, and voice controls
- Open the game’s pause menu or main menu and choose Settings or Options.
- Look in Audio or Audio & Subtitles for dialogue or speech volume, music, effects, voice chat, audio output, and subtitle controls.
- Check Language for spoken-voice and displayed-text language choices. Check Accessibility for subtitle size, contrast, speaker identification, mono audio, or other access settings.
- Apply or confirm changes, then return to gameplay. If a change does not take effect immediately, revisit the menu and check whether the game requires confirmation.
Not every game offers every setting, and a control may be located in a different menu. If an option is missing, consult the game’s current official support page and verify that its directions match your platform and game version.
Make dialogue easier to hear
Balance speech against music and effects
If the game has separate sliders, raise Dialogue, Speech, or Voice and lower Music or SFX as needed. This changes the mix without raising every sound at once. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends independent controls for audio categories; it is design guidance, not a promise that a particular game includes them.
Raising only the master volume may make music and effects louder along with speech, so it may not solve a dialogue-specific problem. Some games also offer voice boost, dialogue clarity, or a reduced-dynamic-range listening mode; check their descriptions because effects differ by title.

Choose an audio presentation that suits your setup
Look for options such as headphones, television, home theater, audio balance, center pan, or mono audio. These controls can change how sound is routed or mixed, so choose based on your playback setup rather than assuming one option is best for everyone.
Official examples show why it is worth reading the option’s description. In God of War Ragnarök, voice boost can make character dialogue clearer while affecting how clearly music and effects are heard during speech. Its center-pan option routes character dialogue through the center channel but removes panning and surround information. That game’s documented audio sliders run from 0–10 and its audio-panning control from -5 to 5; those ranges are specific to that title.

Insomniac’s support page for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales lists listening modes including Headphones, Television, Home Theater, and Midnight, as well as left/right balance and mono audio. For the PS5 version, the page says 3D audio must be turned off before its mono-audio option can be enabled. Platform-level settings can therefore affect which in-game choices are available.
Turn subtitles on and improve readability
Find the subtitle toggle under Audio, Audio & Subtitles, Language, or Accessibility. If the text is hard to read, look for adjustable size, a background or blur setting, contrasting text color, and speaker names. Captions for non-speech sounds and speaker labels are separate features; a subtitle toggle does not guarantee that a game provides them.

The official God of War Ragnarök accessibility page lists subtitle and caption blur controls, None/Light/Dark subtitle backgrounds, and direction indicators. Insomniac’s Spider-Man support page lists subtitle size, background, subtitle color, and speaker-name color. These are examples, not a standard set of features across games.
Subtitles may not cover every spoken line. Bungie’s Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 accessibility page notes that some ambient vendor and NPC dialogue may not have corresponding subtitles.

Set spoken and displayed languages separately when possible
Some games let you choose voice language independently of menu or subtitle language; others do not. Look for separate voice, speech, text, or subtitle language selectors, and confirm the choices offered by the specific game and platform.
For example, EA’s Star Wars: Squadrons settings page describes a speech-language selector for the Xbox One version, listing English, German, Spanish, and French. Insomniac’s Spider-Man support page documents an English VO option for certain supported system-language configurations. Those examples do not establish that every game supports mixed voice and subtitle languages.

If the setting is missing or does not work
- Check each likely category—Audio, Audio & Subtitles, Language, and Accessibility—because games organize settings differently.
- Confirm your game version and platform before following a support article. A setting documented for one platform or edition may not exist on another.
- Check whether a platform audio feature affects the game’s own control. For example, the documented Spider-Man Remastered PS5 mono option requires 3D audio to be off.
- Confirm that changes were applied, then return to gameplay to check the result. Some controls affect only particular kinds of speech or captions.
- If the option is still absent, use the game’s current official support documentation. Do not assume a missing control can be enabled through a universal system setting.
