Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn PS5, adjust horror games in three places: the console-wide Settings > Accessibility menu, Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, and the individual game’s own menus. The game’s menus are the final authority for difficulty, controls, captions, audio cues and gameplay assists; PS5 presets are only starting preferences and may not apply to every title.
For a reliable setup, first identify the barrier you want to remove—such as hearing-only clues, visual information, rapid button presses or excessive combat difficulty—then change the smallest number of settings that addresses it. Test those changes in a safe section of the game before changing more.

Understand the three settings layers
PS5 horror games can expose similar-sounding options at different levels. Knowing which layer you are editing prevents a common mistake: changing a console preference and expecting a game-specific assist to appear.
| Layer | Where to find it | What it can affect | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 accessibility | Settings > Accessibility | Controller behavior, display and text, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, mono audio and zoom | These are console features. A game must support or respond to them for an in-game effect. |
| Game Presets | Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets | Difficulty, performance or resolution mode, first- and third-person movement behavior, subtitles and audio | Sony documents these for PS5 games only, where the option exists; some games ignore some presets. |
| Game options | The title’s Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display or Difficulty menus | The actual difficulty model, remapping, captions, visual indicators, audio cues, timing assists and combat modifiers | Menu names and available controls differ by game, edition and update. |
Why the game’s menu matters most
A horror game decides how its own encounters, quick-time events, stealth checks and information cues work. Only its developers can expose a setting that changes those systems. Use the PS5 menus to establish broad preferences, then open the game and verify every important option there.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set console-wide accessibility options
From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Accessibility. Choose only the categories relevant to your play session; enabling a feature here does not guarantee that every horror game will use it.
Controller and input options
Review the controller-related entries when a game causes pain, fatigue or unreliable presses. Depending on the function, you can adjust how the console accepts input and how information is presented. A game’s own remapping or timing option should take priority when it exists, because the game can map an action that the console cannot identify separately.
Display, text and audio
Display and text controls can improve legibility, while closed captions and mono audio can make information easier to follow. A screen reader can read supported on-screen text. Chat transcription is intended for supported voice-chat situations, not as a universal replacement for a game’s subtitles.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use zoom carefully
PlayStation documents the path Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. Console zoom has limitations: in some contexts the enlarged area does not follow movement during gameplay. Treat it as a navigation and viewing aid, not a guaranteed in-game magnifier. If a horror title offers its own text-size, high-contrast or magnification control, use that instead.
Add Accessibility to the control centre
You can place Accessibility in the PS5 control centre for quicker access. This is useful when switching between games or when another player needs a temporary change, but it does not replace checking the title’s own options.
Do not overpromise haptic changes
PlayStation’s documented haptic-feedback setting applies to navigating the console. It should not be presented as a universal switch for every game’s controller vibration or adaptive-trigger effects. Look for those controls inside the horror game itself.

Choose a PS5 Game Preset
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. The available categories include:
| Preset category | Typical choice | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty | A preferred challenge level, when a game exposes one | Establishes a default for compatible PS5 titles. |
| Performance or resolution mode | Performance-focused or resolution-focused rendering | Lets you prioritize responsiveness or image detail where the game offers both. |
| First-person and third-person view movement | Your preferred camera behavior | Reduces the need to repeat camera changes in compatible titles. |
| Subtitles and audio | Your preferred subtitle or audio behavior | Sets a starting preference for supported games. |
These presets are not forced overrides. Sony states that they apply only to PS5 games, only where the game provides the corresponding option, and that some may not apply to every game. After launching a horror title, open its settings and confirm the result. A preset that appears selected in the console may have no visible effect in a particular game.
Check a game’s listed accessibility features
Before starting a title, select it from Games home and open its PlayStation Store game hub. Press Triangle, or open the side panel, to view listed accessibility information. When available, PlayStation Accessibility Tags can identify support for visual and audio settings, DualSense options, difficulty settings and communication features.
Tags are a preview of developer-provided support, not a guarantee that every control you need exists. A game may have no tags, may list only a few features, or may implement an option differently from another title. Use the listing to decide what to investigate, then verify the exact controls in the game and on your installed version.
Change settings inside the horror game
- Pause at the title screen or during play. Look for Settings, Options, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display or Difficulty. There is no single menu path shared by all PS5 horror games.
- Separate challenge from access. Difficulty changes enemy behavior or resource pressure; accessibility controls may change input timing, information delivery, camera behavior or controller effects without making enemies easier.
- Turn on one related group at a time. For example, enable subtitles and speaker labels together, then test a dialogue scene. This makes it clear which change solved the problem.
- Read the option’s description. Some assists apply only to combat, traversal, quick-time events or particular encounters. Descriptions also reveal whether a setting can be changed mid-game.
- Test before committing. Use a recent save or a low-risk area to check camera movement, button prompts, audio cues, captions and controller feedback.
- Recheck after an update or mode change. A patch, a new-game mode or a different edition can expose a different set of options.
Match a setting to the barrier you are facing

| Barrier or preference | Settings to look for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Important information is delivered through sound | Subtitles, speaker labels, subtitle size or background, visual awareness indicators, traversal or combat audio cues | Whether the cue appears for every relevant event or only selected actions. |
| Visual information is difficult to perceive | Audio cues, text-to-speech, screen-reader support, high-contrast or enlarged text, camera adjustments | Whether menus, exploration and combat are all covered. |
| Rapid or simultaneous presses are a barrier | Simplified or skippable quick-time events, hold-instead-of-tap controls, remapping, reduced timing demands | Whether the change affects all events or only specified sequences. |
| Motion, touch, vibration or trigger resistance causes discomfort | Disable motion and touch controls, controller vibration or adaptive-trigger effects; remap an action where offered | Whether the game has a separate toggle for each effect. |
| Combat is too demanding | Lower difficulty, custom enemy or player settings, reduced enemy accuracy or perception, enhanced dodge, slow motion | Whether the assist changes trophies, encounter availability or only selected combat situations. |
| Camera movement causes discomfort | First- or third-person movement presets, camera-speed or behavior controls, motion-smoothing options if provided | Whether the option affects aiming, traversal and cutscenes separately. |
The Last of Us Part II: a granular example
Naughty Dog’s accessibility documentation describes more than 60 accessibility settings and three presets centered on vision, hearing and motor accessibility. The figure is stated on the current documentation without a publication year, so it should not be treated as a year-specific statistic.

Difficulty and custom challenge
The game lists Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard and Survivor, with Custom available as well. Custom settings can separate challenge dimensions such as player, enemy, ally, stealth and resources. This lets you preserve a demanding exploration style while reducing one particular source of difficulty. The documentation states that trophies are not limited by difficulty.
Information and sensory support
- Text-to-speech can read supported on-screen text.
- Traversal and combat audio cues can supplement visual information.
- Subtitle size and background controls can improve reading in dark scenes.
- Awareness indicators can communicate threats that might otherwise be conveyed visually or acoustically.
Combat assists
Examples include reduced enemy perception, reduced enemy accuracy, enhanced dodge and slow motion. These are player-adjustable assists, not a promise that every encounter or mode changes identically. Some options may be unavailable during certain encounters, so test them in the section where you need them.
Version and account qualifications
The documentation notes features added in Grounded Update Version 1.05. It also notes that some features require an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account. Do not assume that the exact feature list applies to every edition or platform release; check the version installed on your PS5.

Naughty Dog summarizes its approach this way: Naughty Dog encourages everyone to take advantage of these features to create a gameplay experience that’s right for them.
Until Dawn on PS5: a different accessibility model
PlayStation describes Until Dawn as an interactive, narrative-driven slasher-horror experience. Its PS5 feature information lists adjustable difficulty, simplified Quick Time Events, customizable controls, control and tutorial reminders and other accessibility features.
Reduce timing and input pressure
The listed access information indicates that play can avoid rapid button presses and simultaneous presses. That distinction matters in a narrative horror game: you may be able to keep the intended scene and consequence structure while removing a particular physical demand.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Disable motion and controller effects
The same information indicates options to avoid motion controls, touch controls, controller vibration and adaptive-trigger effects. Check each control separately in the game’s menus, because turning off one effect does not prove that the others are disabled.
Use reminders when information is easy to miss
Control and tutorial reminders can help if you return to the game after a break or if a prompt appears only briefly. They are different from difficulty: reminders improve access to instructions without necessarily changing the threat or puzzle rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare horror games by practical access axes
“Accessibility” is not a single score. Compare two games using the dimensions that affect your own play.
| Axis | Questions to ask | The examples show |
|---|---|---|
| Challenge control | Are there fixed levels, custom sliders or encounter-specific assists? | The Last of Us Part II offers several levels and granular custom dimensions; Until Dawn lists adjustable difficulty and simplified events. |
| Input demands | Can you remap controls or avoid rapid, simultaneous, motion or touch inputs? | Until Dawn’s listed options address these demands; other games may not. |
| Information channels | Are captions, speaker cues, visual indicators, audio cues or text-to-speech available? | The Last of Us Part II documents a broad set of visual, hearing and motor features. |
| Controller effects | Can vibration and adaptive triggers be disabled independently? | Until Dawn’s access information lists both; confirm the switches in the installed game. |
| Scope and limits | Is the setting console-wide, PS5-only, version-dependent or unavailable in a particular encounter? | PS5 presets have console-level limits; game assists can have mode or encounter limits. |
Fix settings that do not seem to work
The preset changed, but the game did not
Confirm that you are playing the PS5 version and that the title exposes the matching option. Open the game’s own menu and set the preference there. Sony explicitly allows for presets that do not apply to every game.
A console accessibility feature has no effect
Check whether the feature is intended for console navigation rather than gameplay. Zoom, for example, has documented limitations during gameplay, and the haptic-feedback setting described for console navigation is not a universal in-game haptics switch.
An assist is missing during a scene
Read the game’s description and test another section. Some assists are unavailable during particular encounters or apply only to combat, traversal, menus or quick-time events.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Captions or audio cues are incomplete
Verify subtitle, speaker-label and audio-cue switches separately. A title may caption dialogue without identifying environmental sounds, or provide a cue only for a specific action. If the game offers a subtitle background or size control, adjust that independently from the console’s text settings.
Controls still require an uncomfortable action
Look for remapping, simplified timing, hold or toggle behavior, and separate motion, touch, vibration and adaptive-trigger switches. If none is available, a different control layout or an alternate controller may be the practical solution.
An update changed the menu
Reopen the game’s accessibility and control sections after installing an update, and check the title’s edition and mode. Features documented for a particular update or release should not be assumed to exist in every version.
Consider the PlayStation Access controller only when software is not enough
Sony presents the Access controller for PS5 as a highly customizable controller kit designed to help players with disabilities play more comfortably. It can be operated in different orientations, used on a flat surface or attached to an AMPS-pattern mount.
This hardware is optional: you can change software difficulty and accessibility settings without it. Consider it when the available button layout, reach or control method remains a barrier after you have configured the game. Compatibility with a particular game’s feature set and suitability for an individual player still need to be checked; it is not a universal requirement or guarantee.
Quick Recap
A repeatable setup checklist
- Identify the specific barrier: challenge, vision, hearing, timing, motion, touch, vibration, triggers or camera movement.
- Open Settings > Accessibility and configure the console features relevant to that barrier.
- Optionally set a starting preference in Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Check the PlayStation Store game hub’s side panel or Triangle view for Accessibility Tags and listed features.
- Open the game’s own options and enable the corresponding control, caption, audio or assist setting.
- Test in a low-risk area, then adjust one setting at a time until the game is comfortable and understandable.
- After an update, edition change or new mode, verify the settings again.
