To adjust WordPress writing settings, sign in to your administration dashboard and open Settings → Writing. This screen sets site-wide defaults for new posts, including the fallback category and, when your active theme supports them, the default post format. It also contains optional Post via e-mail and Update Services settings. Save with Save Changes, then use the editor’s Post Settings sidebar when you need to override those defaults for one post.

What the Writing settings control
WordPress.org documentation describes this screen as the place to control features used when adding and editing posts, Pages, and other post types, along with optional functions such as remote publishing, Post via e-mail, and Update Services. The important distinction is scope: Settings → Writing establishes defaults for the site, while the editor controls the post you are currently editing.

A setting on this page does not rewrite every existing post. For example, changing the default category affects a new post that has no other category selected; it does not recategorize your archive. Likewise, selecting a default format does not force an already published post to change format. Existing content can be edited individually in the editor.
Open the Writing settings screen
- Sign in to the WordPress administration dashboard.
- In the left-hand administration menu, select Settings.
- Choose Writing.
- Review the default category, default format, Post via e-mail, and Update Services sections that are available on your installation.
- Make the required changes and select Save Changes.
WordPress displays a confirmation after a successful save. If you leave the page without saving, your changes are not committed to the database. The exact fields visible can vary with the active theme and the features enabled by the installation, but the main path remains Dashboard → Settings → Writing.

Choose the Default Post Category
Default Post Category is the fallback category WordPress assigns when you create a post without choosing another category. It is useful when most of your posts belong to one broad section and you want new drafts to start with a predictable classification.
Change the fallback category
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Find Default Post Category.
- Open the category selector and choose the category you want WordPress to use for uncategorized new posts.
- Select Save Changes.
The selection is a default, not a lock. While editing a post, you can add another category, remove the default, or choose a different category in the Post Settings sidebar. If a new post has an explicit category, that choice takes precedence over the fallback.
What happens when a category is deleted
WordPress also uses the selected default as a recovery destination. If a category is deleted, any posts that were assigned only to that category are moved to the default category. This prevents those posts from being left without a category. A post that already has another category can retain that remaining assignment.
When to review this setting
- After reorganizing your category structure.
- After importing content or changing editorial responsibilities.
- Before deleting the category currently selected as the default.
- When new posts repeatedly appear in an unintended archive.
Changing the fallback does not automatically clean up older posts that are already assigned to the wrong category. Use the editor or a bulk-edit workflow for those individual assignments.
Set the Default Post Format
Default Post Format is available only when the active theme supports WordPress post formats. A format is a presentation classification that a theme can use to distinguish content such as a standard article, an aside, or a gallery. The theme—not the Writing screen—determines how each format appears to visitors.

Choose a format when the control is available
- Activate the theme whose post-format behavior you intend to use.
- Go to Settings → Writing.
- Under Default Post Format, select the desired format, such as Standard, Aside, or Gallery, if those choices are offered.
- Select Save Changes.
The selected format becomes the starting format for new posts. You can still change an individual post’s format in the editor when the theme exposes that control.
Why the post-format setting may be missing
If you do not see Default Post Format, the active theme does not support post formats. This is expected behavior, not evidence that the Writing page is broken. Switching to a theme that declares post-format support can make the control appear. The available choices and their visual treatment depend on that theme, so changing the setting alone cannot create a gallery layout or an aside design in a theme that does not provide one.
Theme support can also affect the individual editor. If the format selector is absent from the Post Settings sidebar, check the active theme before looking for a hidden WordPress preference. A browser refresh or reinstall will not add a feature the theme does not support.
Understand Post via e-mail before enabling it
Post via e-mail is an optional publishing method. WordPress documentation states that posting by e-mail requires a secret e-mail account with POP3 access. The Writing screen asks for the connection details WordPress needs to retrieve messages and turn them into posts.
Information the section requires
- Mail server: the server address supplied by your e-mail provider or host.
- Port: the POP3 port used by that account.
- Login name: the account username.
- Password: the account password.
- Default mail category: the category assigned to posts created from incoming mail.
WordPress notes that users will likely need help from their web host or e-mail provider to obtain the correct server, port, and authentication details. Do not guess these values: a wrong port or login can prevent retrieval, while a misconfigured account can create publishing failures that look like ordinary post problems.

Use a dedicated secret account
Because messages sent to the account can become posts, treat its address and password as publishing credentials. Use a dedicated mailbox rather than a personal inbox, keep the address private, and change the password if it is exposed. Do not place the account details in a public support request or share them with contributors who do not need publishing access. If your provider requires a particular POP3 security mode, confirm the supported settings with that provider before saving.
When Post via e-mail is the wrong tool
Leave the section unused if your editorial workflow does not require e-mail publishing. Ordinary dashboard and editor publishing does not depend on these fields. Enabling an optional mailbox adds another credential and delivery path to maintain, so configure it only when the convenience is worth that operational responsibility.
Configure Update Services
Update Services lets WordPress notify external services when a new post is published. If you use this feature, enter each service URI on its own line in the Update Services field.
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Scroll to Update Services.
- Enter one complete service URI per line.
- Check that each line contains only one address and that there are no accidental comments or extra text.
- Select Save Changes.
These addresses are notifications destinations, not categories or links displayed in your posts. Adding a URI does not change the content of a post; it tells WordPress where to send a publication update. Use only services you trust and that you are expected to notify.
Save, verify, and test the result
After editing any Writing setting, select Save Changes. Look for WordPress’s confirmation message before navigating away. Then verify the result with a low-risk draft rather than changing a live article immediately.

- Create a new draft post.
- Check its category in the editor’s Post Settings sidebar.
- If your theme supports formats, confirm the draft starts with the selected format.
- Change the draft’s category or format manually to confirm that per-post controls still override the site default.
- Discard the test draft if it has no editorial purpose.
For Update Services, the meaningful test occurs when a post is published, not merely when the field is saved. For Post via e-mail, follow the provider’s connection requirements and verify that a controlled test message is handled as expected before using the mailbox for real content.
Global defaults versus controls for one post
Use the following distinction to decide where to make a change:

This separation prevents a common mistake: looking for a site-wide default in the editor, or trying to fix one post by changing a global setting. If only one article needs a different category, schedule, visibility, or format, edit that post instead of changing the Writing page.
Use the editor sidebar for individual publishing decisions
The editor’s Page/Post Settings sidebar contains controls for the current item. Depending on the editor and post type, it can include categories, tags, discussion, status, visibility, scheduling, and post format when the active theme supports formats.
Category and tag adjustments
Use the sidebar when an article belongs in a category other than the default, needs more than one category, or should receive a specific set of tags. These choices apply to the post you are editing and do not alter the fallback selected under Settings → Writing.

Status, visibility, and scheduling
Draft, published, private, public, and scheduled states are post-level decisions. They are not configured by the Writing screen. Set them in the editor’s publishing controls, then review the resulting status before publishing.
Discussion settings
Discussion controls also belong to the individual post’s settings. If comments or related discussion behavior must differ for one article, use that post’s sidebar rather than changing a global writing default.

Block Editor Preferences govern the editor interface itself. They can control which panels are shown and can enable a pre-publish checklist. These preferences are different from Settings → Writing: they change what you see while editing, not the default category, post format, mail account, or update-service destinations.
If a panel seems to be missing, inspect the editor’s Preferences and panel visibility options before assuming the underlying post setting has been removed. A hidden panel and an unsupported feature have different causes: Preferences can hide an available panel, while a theme without post-format support cannot provide a format selector.

A practical review checklist
- Open Settings → Writing from the dashboard.
- Confirm that Default Post Category is a deliberate fallback.
- Check the category before deleting the current default.
- Choose a Default Post Format only when the active theme supports post formats.
- Leave Post via e-mail unconfigured unless you genuinely need mailbox publishing.
- If using Post via e-mail, use a secret POP3 account and obtain server details from the provider or host.
- Enter each Update Services URI on a separate line.
- Select Save Changes and wait for the confirmation.
- Use the editor sidebar for one-post categories, tags, discussion, status, visibility, scheduling, and supported format overrides.
- Use Block Editor Preferences when the issue is a hidden editor panel or pre-publish checklist.
How the settings fit into a reliable publishing workflow
Start with the global defaults only after deciding how your site is organized. Select a category that represents the ordinary destination for new posts, and select a format only if the theme’s layouts make that distinction meaningful. Treat optional services separately: Post via e-mail introduces a mailbox credential, while Update Services introduces notification destinations.
Before publishing, open the post’s sidebar and verify the actual category, tags, discussion choice, status, visibility, schedule, and format. This final review matters because an editor-level choice can override the global default. If the interface does not show a control you expect, distinguish between a hidden panel in Block Editor Preferences and a feature unavailable because of theme support. Finally, save dashboard changes and confirm them before testing a draft or publishing live content.
