The official Gears 5 accessibility guidance says turning off gore effects removes some displayed blood and gore effects during gameplay. It does not promise to remove every violent image or mature element.
The official guidance confirms the control but does not provide a complete button-by-button path or establish that the current label is identical on PC and console. Menu wording and navigation may vary by platform or update, so use the Accessibility options in your own copy rather than relying on a universal controller sequence.
How do I turn off swearing?
Campaign story language
In Gears 5, use the mature-content option in Accessibility to disable swearing in the campaign story. This setting concerns campaign dialogue; it is separate from the profanity filter for text chat.

Received text chat
Gears 5 also has a profanity filter for strong or mature language in received text chat. Changing that filter does not mute or censor campaign dialogue. The two controls cover different contexts, so adjust the one that matches what you want to limit.
Where are the mature-content settings?
For Gears 5, start in the game’s options and open Accessibility. The official accessibility page documents the gore, campaign mature-content, and received-chat profanity controls. It does not establish a shared menu route for other Gears games. If your main menu names a different release, check that game’s own options or official support information rather than assuming Gears 5 directions apply.

Do these settings change the game’s age rating?
No. The settings reduce selected effects or language; they do not change an edition’s rating or make it appropriate for every player. ESRB lists Mature 17+; Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Strong Language for Gears 5, Gears of War: Reloaded, and the original Gears of War.
Those listings cover different editions and platforms: Gears 5 is listed for Windows PC and Xbox; Reloaded for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series; and the original for Windows PC and Xbox 360/Xbox One. Ratings and availability can vary by region, so check the local game listing. The shared rating descriptors do not establish that the games share the same content controls.

Can I block Gears of War for my child?
Xbox parental controls are a separate layer from a game’s own filters. ESRB’s Xbox parental controls guide explains rating-based restrictions and points to the Xbox Family Settings app. These controls can limit which games a child account may access; they do not switch off gore or filter campaign dialogue inside a game.
