Replace the inactive receiver with an eligible player before your league or contest locks. First confirm the player is actually out and check the deadline; then compare your bench and available options by role, scoring fit, matchup, and kickoff time. A teammate may get more chances, but the ruled-out receiver’s targets do not automatically transfer to one player.
1. Confirm the receiver’s status and kickoff
Check the league app and current NFL injury or inactive information before changing your lineup. Status labels can change, and the player’s scheduled game time determines how much time remains to act. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury/inactive list to update fantasy injury status: ESPN player status information.
2. Check the lock that applies to your league or contest
There is no single deadline across fantasy platforms. The platform, contest type, league settings, and the player’s kickoff can all matter. Check the lineup screen or rules in the actual app before relying on a deadline from another service.
- NFL.com leagues: NFL.com’s 2025 fantasy rules allow an owner to change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, using NFL.com’s clock. See the NFL.com fantasy rules.
- DraftKings contests: DraftKings says ordinary contests do not allow lineup edits after the first game begins. In eligible late-swap contests, changes may remain possible for players whose games have not started. Confirm that your contest permits late swap and check its lock time in the app: DraftKings late-swap rules.
3. Choose a player who can legally fill the slot
Start with your bench. The substitute must be eligible for the vacant WR slot, or for a flex slot if your league allows that position and the player qualifies. Roster formats vary; NFL.com describes common formats with two WR positions and a flex, but your league’s lineup settings control what you can start. If no suitable bench player is available, check whether an unrostered receiver can be added in time. Free-agent availability and waiver processing are different: a waiver claim may remain pending rather than becoming available before kickoff. NFL.com’s waiver schedule and priority rules apply to NFL.com leagues, not automatically to other platforms or custom leagues; check your own settings and the NFL.com rules.
4. Compare the eligible replacements
There is no validated formula in the available platform guidance for predicting which replacement will score best. Treat this as a judgment call, not a guaranteed target handoff. Compare the realistic options using the factors below, and check your league’s scoring settings rather than assuming all formats reward the same production equally.

- Role and likely opportunity: Consider the player’s role in the offense and expected involvement. Do not assume the inactive receiver’s work goes to a particular teammate.
- Scoring fit: Check whether your league’s rules place different value on receptions, yardage, or other production.
- Matchup: Use matchup as one consideration alongside role and scoring fit, not as a promise of performance.
- Kickoff and flexibility: A later-starting option may preserve a chance to make another change, but only if your platform or contest allows edits after earlier games lock.
5. Make the change and verify it saved
- Open your lineup before the applicable lock.
- Remove the ruled-out receiver from the starting WR or flex position.
- Select an eligible replacement from your bench, or add an available free agent if your league permits it and the move can take effect in time.
- Review the lineup screen to make sure the intended player is starting and the change was accepted.
Because only starters count toward the weekly total, leaving an inactive receiver in a locked starting slot can mean receiving no points from that position. The deadline and whether a late edit is possible depend on your league or contest rules.
