In Civilization VII, the game advances through Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern in shared Age Transitions. You don’t trigger the transition by completing a Triumph or pressing an advance button: the official materials describe Age Progress but do not specify the current rule that fills it. When a transition begins, choose whether to keep your civilization or switch, then select three Dedications from the options you have unlocked.
How Age progression works in Civ 7
A full campaign has three Ages—Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern—and players move between them together. The Age Progress display is the HUD’s place to track progress and victory status, but Firaxis’s current official materials do not explain exactly what fills the bar or when it triggers a transition. Check it for status; don’t rely on a specific turn count, milestone, or button as the trigger.
The current rules come from Test of Time, Update 1.4.0, which went live on May 19, 2026. The update replaced Legacy Paths with Triumphs and changed transition choices. Older guides that say Legacy Path milestones advance the Age are out of date. The official 1.4.0 patch notes describe the current transition options; the Civilization VII overview provides the three-Age structure.
What to do during an Age Transition
- Choose whether to stay or switch civilizations. Test of Time lets you keep your current civilization or choose another for the coming Age. Firaxis says, “The choice is yours: you can choose to stay or swap at each Age Transition.”
- Select three Dedications. Choose from the Dedications you have unlocked for the next Age. Major Triumphs can unlock additional Dedications.
What Triumphs do—and don’t do
Triumphs are optional objectives associated with six Attributes: Militaristic, Cultural, Scientific, Economic, Diplomatic, and Expansionist. Minor Triumphs grant immediate benefits; Major Triumphs can unlock Dedications for the next Age. They can improve your transition options, but they are not the direct mechanism for advancing the Age, and you do not need to complete every Triumph.

Should you stay with your civilization or switch?
There is no universally stronger choice established by the current rules. Switching lets you select a civilization associated with the new Age; staying preserves continuity with your current one. Consider whether you want a fresh civilization identity or prefer to carry your existing one forward.
If you stay with a civilization outside its Apex Age, it uses age-appropriate Time-Tested civics and Syncretism support. Its Unique Ability carries across Ages, so staying does not mean losing that defining ability. The choice is strategic, not a requirement for progression.

Check that your guide matches the current version
Look for Test of Time or Update 1.4.0 in a guide’s date or version notes. Advice built around Legacy Paths predates the May 19, 2026 update. Firaxis recommends starting a new game for the best experience with 1.4.0, because some new abilities or effects may not appear in existing saves until you start one. That is a recommendation, not a statement that older saves cannot be used.
