There is no research-backed number of gaming hours that works for every couple. A fair agreement starts with what is happening between you: which moments leave one partner feeling ignored, what each person needs from gaming and time together, and how to make room for both without dropping shared responsibilities.
Start with the moment that feels hurtful
Talk when neither of you is in the middle of a match or already arguing. Name a specific event and its effect rather than opening with a judgment about gaming or your partner’s character.
For example: “When I try to tell you something while you’re playing and don’t get a response, I feel shut out. Can we set aside time when we’re both available?” This is a practical example, not a research-tested script. If the issue is a canceled plan, a conversation repeatedly interrupted by play, or too little time together, describe that specific pattern instead.
Researchers Katherine M. Hertlein and Blendine P. Hawkins recommend examining how each person experiences inclusion and exclusion in the relationship. Their 2012 article is a clinical review, not a validated self-help method, but that framing can help keep the conversation focused on the relationship rather than on whether gaming is inherently bad. Find out what each of you needs
Ask the person who games what it provides: perhaps relaxation, competition, social connection, or a commitment to a team. Ask the other partner what “feeling considered” would look like in observable terms. It might mean keeping plans, putting devices away during dinner, or having regular time when both are free to talk.
Do not make either person prove they are allowed to care. Gaming can be meaningful leisure, and feeling ignored can still be a real relationship concern. The review notes that gaming is not a problem for every couple, so avoid treating one couple’s conflict as evidence that all gaming is harmful.

Build an agreement together
Make the plan specific enough that both partners can tell whether it is working. The schedule should account for gaming commitments and household life, not give one person unilateral control. Hertlein and Hawkins discuss how a gaming group’s schedule can take precedence over the household’s and leave the other partner with little input; a mutual plan makes that concern visible.
- Protected time together: Decide when gaming is put away and both partners are available to each other.
- Gaming windows: Agree on gaming times or nights jointly, including any regular team commitments.
- Shared responsibilities: Specify how work, household tasks, parenting, and sleep fit into the routine.
- Notice and transitions: Agree how much notice to give if a session has a fixed commitment or may run late, and how to finish a match before reconnecting.
- Review date: Set a time to check whether both partners feel the arrangement is fair.
These are planning ideas, not a research-proven formula. Adapt them to your actual routines and obligations rather than copying someone else’s hours.

Review how the agreement feels, not just the minutes
At the check-in, ask whether plans are being kept, protected time is actually happening, and either person feels ignored, controlled, or perpetually on call. Change terms that are not working. A timer or tracking app cannot substitute for discussing attention, commitments, and what each person needs.
There is no universal weekly limit established by the sources discussed here. A 2012 study of 1,333 heterosexual couples found that, among men in the sample, time spent gaming was associated with greater conflict over media time and content; media conflict was in turn associated with physical and relational aggression. These are associations in that study, not proof that gaming causes conflict or aggression, and they do not establish an appropriate limit for your relationship. Read the study record.

A separate Pew Research Center survey of 4,860 U.S. adults, conducted online October 16–28, 2019, found that 15% of partnered respondents said they were at least sometimes bothered by how much time their partner spent playing video games. That historical U.S. figure is not a 2026 estimate or a measure of relationship harm. In the same report, 51% of partnered U.S. adults said their partner was at least sometimes distracted by a cellphone while they tried to talk; that is evidence about cellphone distraction, not gaming. If repeated conversations lead nowhere, responsibilities are routinely neglected, gaming continues despite serious consequences, or discussions become intimidating or unsafe, scheduling alone may not address what is happening. Consider seeking appropriate outside support. High playtime by itself does not establish an addiction diagnosis, and the sources above do not provide a diagnostic test or a formal threshold for referral. If either partner feels unsafe, prioritize immediate safety and local support.
