Start with how you’ll play: together on one screen or online from separate systems. Then confirm that your platforms support the same multiplayer mode, and choose a game whose pace fits you both. It Takes Two is a focused two-player adventure, Split Fiction offers changing challenges and advertised crossplay, and Stardew Valley is a more open-ended shared world. None is a universal best pick; the right one depends on your setup and the kind of sessions you want.
1. Decide whether you’ll play locally or online
First establish whether you’ll share a room and screen or play remotely. Couch co-op, local split-screen, and online co-op are different modes, and a game’s support for one does not guarantee support for the others.
- Same room: Check whether the game supports couch co-op or local split-screen, and whether you have the required number of compatible controllers.
- Separate locations: Check online co-op requirements for each platform, including any platform account, persistent internet connection, or console subscription. Verify current requirements for your systems before buying.
It Takes Two supports couch or online co-op with split-screen, according to EA’s game page. Stardew Valley supports split-screen and remote multiplayer options on supported versions; its multiplayer documentation explains the available modes and platform-specific details.
2. Confirm that your platforms can play together
“Online co-op” does not mean “cross-platform.” Before choosing a game, match the exact platforms and versions each of you owns against the game’s crossplay rules. Cross-generation support—playing across different generations of the same console family—is also distinct from cross-platform play.

|---|---|---|
| It Takes Two | EA says Friend’s Pass supports cross-generation play but not cross-platform play. | Confirm both players’ console family or PC setup is compatible. |
| Split Fiction | EA advertises crossplay among PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. | Check the specific platform versions and online requirements for your pair of systems. |
| Stardew Valley | The multiplayer documentation says cross-platform play is generally unsupported, apart from PC versions. | Check the exact versions, local or online mode, and platform-specific limits. |
Sources: EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ, EA’s Split Fiction page, and the Stardew Valley multiplayer documentation. Platform features and requirements can change, so verify them for your setup before purchase.
3. Match the game’s structure to the sessions you want
It Takes Two: a directed adventure built for two
EA describes It Takes Two as a co-op-first platform adventure, with changing challenges that call for teamwork. It is designed purely for two players, making it a natural fit if you want a structured campaign where both people need to participate. It supports couch or online split-screen play. EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ says a friend can join without owning the full game, but one player must own it. Friend’s Pass is not cross-platform play.

Split Fiction: varied mechanics and settings
EA calls Split Fiction a split-screen adventure tailored for two. Its description highlights coordination and timing across different abilities and styles, including platforming, stealth, and puzzles. Consider it if you enjoy frequent changes in how you play or if its advertised crossplay connects your systems. EA’s product page and Friend’s Pass FAQ cover crossplay and access requirements. One player must own the full game; EA lists installation, account, and persistent internet requirements for Friend’s Pass.
Stardew Valley: a shared world without a fixed campaign path
Stardew Valley multiplayer lets players work in the same farm world, following much of the single-player experience together. The multiplayer documentation describes split-screen, LAN, and internet/IP options on supported versions, as well as shared or separate wallets. Choose it if you want an ongoing world and room to decide what to do in a session rather than a narrowly directed co-op campaign. Player limits and online requirements vary by platform, so check the documentation for your version.

4. Check the purchase and access arrangement
It Takes Two and Split Fiction offer Friend’s Pass options that can let a second player join without buying the full game. That does not remove the need for one player to own the game, nor does it guarantee compatibility or remove platform-specific online requirements. Read the relevant EA Friend’s Pass terms for the game and platform you plan to use.
For any title, also confirm whether remote play requires a platform account, a persistent connection, or a console subscription. These conditions depend on the platform and can affect the real cost and convenience of playing together.
