To allow multiplayer on a Microsoft child account, the adult Microsoft Family organizer must change the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety controls. Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow, save the change, and have the child sign out and back in. The child account usually cannot remove this restriction itself.
Allow multiplayer from the parent or family organizer account
A Microsoft child account usually cannot remove its own Xbox multiplayer restriction. The adult who is the Microsoft Family organizer must change the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.

- Sign in with the Microsoft Family organizer account. Use the adult account that manages the child’s family group—not the child’s account.
- Select the correct child profile. Check that it is the same Microsoft/Xbox account the child uses in the game. Changing another family member’s settings will not affect the child’s session.
- Open the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety controls. Depending on the device, region, and current Microsoft interface, this may appear under Family, Xbox settings, privacy, or online safety.
- Find “You can join multiplayer games.” Change this permission to Allow.
- Save or submit the change. The button label and exact navigation can vary, so make sure the settings page confirms or saves the update before closing it.
- Refresh the child’s session. Sign out of the game and related Xbox or Microsoft apps, then sign back in with the child’s account. Restarting the Xbox, PC, or game can also help the new permission load.
That setting is the central permission for joining Xbox multiplayer. It does not automatically enable every related feature, such as voice chat, messaging, cross-network play, clubs, invitations, or community-created content.

| What the child wants to do | What to review |
|---|---|
| Play multiplayer with Xbox-network users | You can join multiplayer games |
| Play with people on other platforms or networks | The separate cross-network-play permission |
| Talk or exchange messages with other players | Communication, voice, text, or messaging permissions |
| Receive or send game invitations | Friend, invitation, or social permissions |
| View or create player-made content | Community-content or user-generated-content permissions |
Keeping these controls separate lets the organizer allow multiplayer without granting every communication or content-sharing capability.
If multiplayer is still blocked
1. Confirm that the organizer changed the right account
Verify the child’s gamertag, Microsoft account, and the account currently signed in to the game. A console can have several profiles, and Minecraft, the Xbox app, Windows gaming apps, and the console may not all be using the account you expect. The permission must be changed for the account that the game is checking.
2. Check the family group and organizer role
Only the appropriate adult organizer can administer family members and their permissions. If the child is in a different Microsoft family group, the settings you changed may not control that account. Microsoft’s family-group rules can also prevent an account from simply joining another group while it remains associated with an existing one; the account may need to leave or be removed from the previous family group first.

3. Sign out everywhere relevant
After saving the setting, sign out of the child’s game and any related Xbox or Microsoft gaming app. Sign back in with the child’s account. On a console or PC, a restart is a reasonable additional refresh step, but it cannot replace changing the account privilege.
4. Allow time for the setting to propagate
Do not assume that a saved setting must take effect instantly. A Microsoft-hosted troubleshooting case reported that an update took more than 24 hours to become effective. That is an observed case, not a guaranteed Microsoft service window. If the setting already says Allow, test again later rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
5. Check whether the account is incorrectly classified as a child
If the account holder is actually an adult but Microsoft still treats the account as a child, the issue may be an incorrect birth date or account classification. Correct the account through Microsoft’s documented adult-mistaken-for-child process. Do not change a genuine child’s birth date to bypass family restrictions; the organizer should manage the child’s permissions instead.

6. Separate account permissions from game access
A multiplayer permission block is not normally fixed by buying a controller, console, router, networking accessory, game, or subscription. A particular game may still require its own purchase or subscription for online play, but that requirement is separate from the Xbox account privilege that allows multiplayer. Resolve the account setting first, then check the game’s own access requirements if necessary.

The same Microsoft account-privilege logic can affect Xbox consoles, Windows gaming applications, and games such as Minecraft. The child should sign in using the account whose permissions the organizer changed.
The exact menus and labels can differ across Xbox generations, Windows apps, regions, and Microsoft account experiences. For that reason, a single fixed click path can become inaccurate. Look for the child profile’s Xbox privacy, online safety, or equivalent family-management area, then locate You can join multiplayer games.

If Minecraft reports that multiplayer is disabled, changing a setting inside the game may not be enough. The restriction can belong to the Microsoft/Xbox account used by Minecraft, so check the family organizer’s account controls and confirm that Minecraft is signed in to that same child profile.
What the setting does—and does not do
- It does: allow the account to join Xbox multiplayer when the game and any required service access also permit it.
- It does not necessarily: enable cross-platform play, voice chat, text messaging, friend requests, invitations, clubs, Realms, or community creations.
- It does not: correct an incorrect date of birth or change the child/adult classification.
- It does not: guarantee instant propagation to every console, app, or game session.
Quick checklist
- Use the adult Microsoft Family organizer account.
- Select the exact child profile used in the game.
- Open Xbox privacy and online-safety settings.
- Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow.
- Review cross-network play or communication permissions only if the activity needs them.
- Save the change.
- Sign out and back in on the child’s game, Xbox, or Windows app.
- Confirm the child is in the intended Microsoft family group.
- Wait and test again if the game still shows the old restriction.
When to contact Microsoft support
Escalate the issue if the correct organizer has selected the correct child account, the multiplayer setting remains Allow, the child has refreshed the session, and the restriction continues after allowing time for propagation. Have the child’s gamertag, the Microsoft account being used, the device, the game, and the exact error message available. Do not share the account password in a support request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child change their own Microsoft multiplayer setting?
The adult Microsoft Family organizer must change the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety setting. Set “You can join multiplayer games” to “Allow,” save it, and have the child sign out and back in.

Does allowing multiplayer turn on voice chat and cross-platform play?
No. Multiplayer, communication, cross-network play, and community-content access can use separate account permissions. Enable only the additional controls the child’s activity requires.
Why does Minecraft or Xbox still say multiplayer is disabled?
Check that the organizer changed the exact account used by the game, that the child is in the intended Microsoft family group, and that the setting was saved. Then sign out and back in and allow time for propagation. A Microsoft-hosted case reported a delay of more than 24 hours, but Microsoft does not provide that case as a universal guarantee.
Should I change the child account’s birth date to enable multiplayer?
Do not change the birth date to bypass restrictions. If Microsoft incorrectly classifies an adult account as a child, use Microsoft’s account-classification or birth-date correction process.

The Bottom Line
To allow multiplayer, the Microsoft Family organizer—not usually the child—must open the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings and set You can join multiplayer games to Allow. Then save the change, refresh the child’s game session, and check separate permissions if cross-network play or communication is also required.
