Identify the edition
Bedrock Edition is used on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and Windows. It supports cross-platform play when the required accounts, subscriptions and permissions are in place. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Java and Bedrock do not directly join the same worlds.

Most console, mobile and cross-platform parental-control problems concern Bedrock, so the walkthrough below uses Bedrock menus. Java still uses Microsoft/Xbox privacy controls, but its menus and multiplayer ecosystem are not identical.
Check the accounts
For multiplayer, Realms, cross-play and social controls, the child normally needs a Microsoft account in addition to the platform account. Minecraft’s account requirements are listed at Minecraft account requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Switch: Nintendo Account plus Microsoft account.
- PlayStation: PSN account plus a linked Microsoft account.
- Android: Google account plus Microsoft account.
- Apple devices: Apple ID plus Microsoft account.
- Windows and Xbox: Microsoft account.
These accounts are not interchangeable. Edit the exact Microsoft account that the child uses inside Minecraft.
Main fix: change the child’s Microsoft/Xbox permissions
- Have the child sign out of Minecraft and close the game.
- Open Xbox Privacy & online safety settings.
- Sign in with the parent Microsoft account.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open Privacy or Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety. Headings vary; use the permission names below.
- Set Join multiplayer games or Join multiplayer on Xbox to Allow. This is the key setting for multiplayer, Realms and server-based play.
- Set Join cross-network play to Allow when the child must play with people on Switch, PlayStation, mobile or another non-Xbox platform.
- Set Add friends and follow others to Allow if the child needs to find or add friends.
- Choose a separate voice and text communication setting, such as Friends, rather than automatically allowing everyone.
- Select Submit, wait for the page to reload, then close and restart Minecraft.
The official Minecraft instructions are at Managing Multiplayer Game Access for a Child Account. Labels can change as Microsoft updates its interface, but the permission names are the useful reference.
Use the Xbox Family Settings app
An Xbox console is not required. In the Xbox Family Settings app:

- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Sign in with the parent Microsoft account.
- Select the child.
- Open the settings gear and the relevant category tiles.
- Allow multiplayer, cross-network play and friend adding only as needed.
- Set communication separately, then fully restart Minecraft.
What each permission controls
| Setting | Controls | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Join multiplayer games | Multiplayer sessions, Realms and other online game access | Allow if the child is approved to play online |
| Join cross-network play | Playing with people using other platforms | Allow only when cross-platform friends are needed |
| Add friends and follow others | Finding or adding players through the Friends interface | Allow for known friends |
| Voice/text communication | Who can communicate with the child | Friends or another restricted audience |
| Friend-request controls | Whether other players can send requests | Use the narrowest audience that works for your family |
Microsoft also provides controls for profiles, community creations and visibility of friends or following lists. These are separate from multiplayer permission; see Minecraft social and communication settings.
Enable multiplayer in the individual Bedrock world
Account permission does not override a world whose host has disabled multiplayer.
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- On the Worlds tab, select the pencil/edit icon beside the world.
- Choose Multiplayer and turn on Multiplayer Game.
- Set player access to Friends or Friends of Friends.
- Start the world, pause it, choose Social, then Invite to Play.
- Select the intended friends and send invitations.
Use Friends for a narrower boundary. Friends of Friends is more convenient but permits a wider circle. Details are in Minecraft’s Bedrock invitation guide.

How the child joins a friend’s world
- The friend starts the world and remains online.
- The child selects Play, then the Friends tab.
- Under Joinable Friends, the child selects the friend.
Both players generally need to be Minecraft friends, online and running compatible current versions. See How to join a friend’s Bedrock world.
Platform requirements
Xbox
Xbox online console multiplayer requires an eligible Game Pass plan. The current Minecraft store listing identifies Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate as supporting online console multiplayer: Minecraft on Xbox. A purchase page checked August 18, 2026 showed Game Pass Essential at $24.99 per quarter; plan names, prices and billing terms can change. Older help pages may say Game Pass Core, so check the current Xbox store.

Nintendo Switch
Online play requires Nintendo Switch Online, in addition to the Microsoft account used by Minecraft. Nintendo’s U.S. prices checked August 18, 2026 were:

Verify current prices at Nintendo Switch Online support. Link Minecraft to the child’s Microsoft account using Nintendo’s Minecraft sign-in instructions.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Online Minecraft multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. The child needs both a PSN account and a Microsoft account linked in Minecraft for cross-platform play and Realms. Launch Minecraft, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account, scan the QR code or visit the displayed linking page, enter the code and sign in with the intended Microsoft account. One Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account; changing that relationship may require a separate unlinking process. Check current plans at PlayStation Plus and see the PlayStation Minecraft FAQ.
Windows PC
Windows may run Bedrock, Java or both. A Microsoft account is required for Minecraft on Windows. PC play generally has no console online-service subscription, but child-account privacy settings still apply. Java and Bedrock players should not be expected to join the same worlds.

Android and iOS
Mobile Minecraft is Bedrock. The device’s Google account or Apple ID does not replace the Microsoft account needed for multiplayer-related social features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Allow multiplayer without opening unrestricted chat
Set Join multiplayer games to Allow, then choose a narrower communication audience such as Friends. Cross-network play can also remain blocked unless the child needs it. This setup suits a child playing with known friends, although some servers, invitations or Realms interactions may be less visible when communication and discovery are restricted.
For a persistent private world, a Realm remains available when its owner is offline, unlike a normal friend-hosted world. It has a recurring cost and still requires invitations and Microsoft privacy permissions. See Minecraft Realms and Minecraft multiplayer troubleshooting.
If Minecraft still says “Multiplayer is disabled”
- Confirm you edited the child’s exact Microsoft account and that Minecraft is signed into that account.
- Confirm Join multiplayer games is set to Allow, then select Submit again.
- Enable Join cross-network play when the other player uses a different platform.
- Close Minecraft completely and restart it; restart the device if necessary.
- Check that the host’s world has Multiplayer Game enabled.
- Verify any required Xbox, Nintendo Switch Online or PlayStation Plus subscription is active.
- Update Minecraft and the operating system. Avoid testing with a preview or snapshot when the other player uses the normal release.
- Make sure both players are using the same edition and compatible versions.
- Test with a known friend’s Bedrock world before investigating network settings such as DNS or ports.
For a child who cannot add friends, check both Others can send you friend requests under Privacy and Add friends and follow others under Online Safety. If the child can join some friends but not others, check cross-network permission, the other account’s permissions, edition and version, host-world settings and subscriptions. Java Edition notes
Java uses Microsoft accounts on Windows, macOS and Linux, but the Bedrock world-editing and Friends-tab instructions above do not apply exactly. Java does not directly cross-play with Bedrock. Treat the Microsoft privacy settings as account-level controls, then follow the Java-specific multiplayer workflow for the server or world being used.
What may cost extra
- Xbox online multiplayer: an eligible Game Pass plan.
- Nintendo Switch: Nintendo Switch Online.
- PlayStation: PlayStation Plus.
- Realms: optional recurring hosting subscription.
The Microsoft/Xbox parental-control tools themselves are free. Do not buy a separate parental-control app for this setup. Prices and plan names are regional and change over time; use the official platform pages above before purchasing.
