If a YouTube live stream copyright strike is already active, YouTube’s identified options that do not involve a counter notification are to ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request or, if you qualify, complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire. YouTube does not provide a general appeal route for an applied copyright strike through these options. If the removal is still scheduled and the strike has not been applied, you may have a seven-day window to act.
First check whether the strike is active or the removal is scheduled
Open the notice and YouTube Studio and check the status of the affected stream. The distinction matters: a scheduled copyright removal request has a limited pre-strike window; once the strike is active, the non-counter-notification options are different.

- Active strike: The stream has been removed and a copyright strike has been applied. YouTube says an active live stream removed for copyright also leads to a seven-day restriction on the channel’s live-streaming access. YouTube: Understand copyright strikes

- In YouTube Studio, find the affected video under Active copyright strikes.
- Review the claimant information shown for the removal and use it to contact the claimant.
- Ask specifically for a retraction of the copyright removal request. YouTube distinguishes retracting the removal request from retracting only a strike.
- Keep a copy of your request and the response, if any. The claimant decides whether to retract; YouTube does not mediate ownership disputes.
A retraction can clear the associated strike and restore the removed content, unless other videos are tied to the request or you deleted the content. These outcomes depend on the circumstances of the request. YouTube: Retract a copyright removal request

If you qualify, complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire
YouTube says a strike expires after 90 days when the creator completes Copyright School and has fewer than three copyright strikes. A channel with three copyright strikes in 90 days is subject to termination. Strike expiration clears the strike but does not reinstate the removed stream. Check your channel’s current strike status and follow the Copyright School instructions shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube: Understand copyright strikes
If the removal is scheduled, use the seven-day window
Before a scheduled removal takes effect, YouTube identifies two possible actions: delete the content before the window expires or seek a retraction from the claimant. Check the specific notice promptly to confirm that the request is still pending and determine the deadline. You cannot submit a counter notification until the removal takes effect and the strike has been applied. After a strike is active, deleting the video generally does not resolve it. Do not confuse a copyright strike with other YouTube appeals
Content ID claim appeal
A Content ID claim appeal belongs to the claim process, before a copyright takedown. If the claimant rejects an appeal, they may submit a copyright removal request; if YouTube accepts that request as valid, the content is removed and a strike is applied. A Community Guidelines appeal concerns a different policy basis. A copyright removal should be handled through YouTube’s copyright-strike options, not a Community Guidelines appeal flow. YouTube: Appeal a Community Guidelines decision

What a counter notification is—and why it is different
A counter notification is a legal request to reinstate content removed after a copyright removal request. YouTube describes it for cases where the uploader believes the removal was a mistake or misidentification, potentially involving an exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. It is not an ordinary appeal form. YouTube’s instructions require contact information, a clear explanation to the claimant, and direct links to the removed material. If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action or the content may be reinstated. If you do not want to use that process, the applicable alternatives for an active strike are claimant retraction or eligible expiration after Copyright School. YouTube says it does not mediate copyright ownership disputes; its guidance notes that legal help may be useful for complex disputes or concerns about disclosing personal information.
