In the Xbox app for Windows 10, open your profile menu, select the status currently shown as Online, and choose Appear offline. You remain signed in; this changes your Xbox presence visibility rather than disconnecting your PC.
Quick steps
- Open Start, search for Xbox, and launch the Xbox PC app.
- Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account whose presence you want to change.
- Select your profile picture or gamertag, usually near the upper-left corner.
- Select the current presence label, such as Online.
- Choose Appear offline.
- Reopen the profile menu and check that it now shows Appear offline or an equivalent offline indicator.

How to appear online again
- Open the Xbox app and select your profile picture or gamertag.
- Select the status currently displayed.
- Choose Appear online or Online, depending on the app version.
What “Appear offline” changes
This setting changes the Xbox profile’s presence so friends and other Xbox users generally see you as offline while you remain signed in. It can make friend discovery and invitations less convenient, but it is not the same as signing out or cutting your internet connection.

Xbox’s PC app supports social features and cross-device chat, but linked services can maintain separate activity indicators. Discord’s Xbox connection FAQ explains that its own connection and status behavior may apply independently.

Appear offline versus playing games offline
Trying to hide your status? Choose Appear offline in the profile menu.
Trying to play without internet? Use the Xbox and Microsoft Store offline-permission process instead. Offline play can involve device designation, licenses, and other limits that are separate from presence visibility. Can you still play online while appearing offline?
Usually, appearing offline is intended to change visibility, not disable your account or network. Online multiplayer, messages, invites, and party features may still work when the game, account, and connection allow them. A specific game can show its own “online,” “in a match,” or “playing” state, and appearing offline may make it harder for friends to discover or join you through Xbox presence.
If the status option is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm you are signed in to the Xbox PC app, not only the Microsoft Store.
- Expand the profile menu fully and click the status text itself; in some builds it is a label rather than a distinct control.
- Update Xbox through the Microsoft Store or the app’s available update mechanism.
- Check Windows compatibility. Microsoft’s current Xbox PC app page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher: Xbox app for PC requirements.
- Close and reopen the Xbox app. If necessary, restart Windows and Xbox-related background services.
- Sign out of the Xbox app and sign back in, making sure it is the intended Microsoft account.
- Try changing the status from another Xbox-connected client, such as the Xbox mobile app or a console, then reopen the PC app. Synchronization can be delayed.
- If the account is child or family managed, review whether its privacy controls restrict presence changes.
Do not disable your network or reinstall Windows as a first-line fix; neither addresses a missing presence control directly.

Xbox Game Bar fallback
Press Windows key + G, open the Xbox profile or social panel, and look for its presence control. Select Appear offline if that option is exposed in your Game Bar build. Game Bar is an Xbox social entry point, but Microsoft does not guarantee an identical status-menu layout in every Windows 10 version: Xbox PC and Game Bar information.
If friends still see you online
Check each likely explanation:
- Presence synchronization may take time, or one Xbox client may not have refreshed.
- The PC app may be signed in to a different Microsoft account than the one you changed.
- You may have selected Do not disturb or another state instead of Appear offline.
- Friends may be seeing cached “last seen” or game-activity information rather than live presence. Xbox privacy guidance discusses offline and last-seen displays: Microsoft Community status discussion.
- A game, Steam, Discord, or another linked service may publish its own activity.
- Xbox app, Game Bar, console, and mobile app states may refresh at different times.
When the status is stuck
- Verify the account and reopen the profile status menu.
- Select Appear online, wait briefly, then select Appear offline again.
- Close and relaunch both Xbox and Xbox Game Bar.
- Install available Xbox app and Windows updates.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Change presence from another Xbox client to determine whether the issue affects the account everywhere or only the PC app.
- Review Xbox privacy settings if online or game activity remains visible.
- Contact Xbox Support if presence is inconsistent across all clients.
Windows 10 version note
The current Xbox PC app requirements list Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher. An older Windows 10 installation may therefore lack support for the current app or its current interface. Check Settings > System > About to see your Windows version before troubleshooting further.
