Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To reliably archive your own 24/7 sleep sounds stream, record it locally while it is live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you also want YouTube replays, end and restart the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, creating separate replay segments rather than relying on one continuous archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup.
This guide is for creators preserving their own stream and audio, or content they are authorized to record. It does not establish permission to copy another creator’s broadcast.
Choose the right archive for a 24/7 stream
A stream that runs continuously for a day or longer is beyond YouTube’s dependable automatic-archive window. Local recording is the more reliable primary copy; YouTube’s replay can be a convenient additional copy, but it is not a substitute for recording your own broadcast.
| Route | What it provides | Main limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live archive | A replay associated with the broadcast | YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Shorter replay segments, backed up locally |
| Local recording during the stream | A creator-controlled copy that does not depend on YouTube’s replay becoming available | Requires a working recording setup and enough local storage. | Primary preservation copy for a continuous stream |
| YouTube Studio creator download | A way for a channel owner to retrieve a video they uploaded | YouTube documents an MP4 download at 720p or 360p depending on video size; it is not equivalent to assuming the original local quality. | Secondary retrieval if the original local file is unavailable |
YouTube’s archive guidance is at Archive live streams. Its download workflow applies to videos uploaded by the signed-in creator, not other users’ videos: Download YouTube videos that you’ve uploaded.

Record the stream locally
1. Plan storage around your actual recording settings
Choose a recording drive with room for the planned duration and how long you intend to retain the files. If the archive matters, consider copying completed recordings to a second physical drive. File size depends on the encoder and recording settings; there is no defensible universal per-hour estimate for this specific use case, so do not size a drive from a generic figure.
2. Configure local recording in OBS
Set OBS to record as well as stream. OBS’s official Help Portal points creators to local-recording settings and recording guidance; its suggested starting point is Simple output mode with recording presets, using a hardware encoder if one is available. Check the saved file before depending on the configuration for an overnight or longer session: open it and confirm that the picture and sleep-sounds audio play.

3. Start recording, then monitor both outputs
- Start the local recording and confirm OBS shows recording as active.
- Start the YouTube broadcast and check its live status.
- During the session, watch the recording indicator, available disk space, and stream health. OBS notes that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
Recording locally protects against losing the only copy if YouTube does not create a replay. It does not remove the need to check that the recording is actually progressing and that the destination drive has not filled up.
Split YouTube replays into shorter broadcasts
If separate YouTube replays are important, plan to end each broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, then start another. YouTube’s stated threshold is the reason for the plan; segmenting is a practical inference, not a guarantee that every account or broadcast will produce a replay.

- Before the current broadcast reaches 12 hours, end it in YouTube’s live controls.
- Allow YouTube time to process the completed broadcast.
- Start a new broadcast for the next segment.
- Keep local capture running across the change only if your recording setup supports it safely. Otherwise, make sequential local files and verify both the end of one file and the start of the next.
A completed broadcast is converted into a YouTube video, but it is not available immediately; the delay relates to the broadcast’s actual length, according to the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Verify and preserve the files
- Open each local file and check that it plays through, including its audio.
- Keep the master local recording and, if needed, copy it to separate storage.
- Check YouTube Studio for the replay after processing rather than expecting it to appear immediately.
- If you retrieve a copy through YouTube Studio, treat it as secondary: YouTube documents creator downloads as MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on video size.
For viewers, DVR is different from an archive. It can provide pause, rewind, and resume controls during a live broadcast, but on very long streams it may be limited or unavailable, and viewers cannot seek to before the broadcast began. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Keep the audio rights clear
Use sleep sounds that you created or are licensed to use for the broadcast and its recordings. The ability to record your own stream does not grant rights to third-party music, sound effects, or another creator’s live content. YouTube’s creator download workflow does not provide a way to download another user’s video.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded sleep-sounds videos, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
