Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve a 24/7 stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you own and produce the stream, record the outgoing program locally in OBS, use a retention limit, and move or delete completed files before your active disk fills up. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.
Why YouTube’s automatic archive is not enough for a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. For streams over 12 hours, YouTube warns that the broadcast may not be captured at all. “May not” is not a guarantee that every long stream will be lost; it does mean a 24/7 channel should not treat the automatic archive as a dependable full-length copy.
YouTube’s archive is also different from a recording you control. For a stream you own, a local OBS recording gives you a separate copy and lets you choose where recordings go and how long you keep them.
Choose an archive policy before you start recording
Storage use depends on the actual combined audio-and-video recording bitrate, how many hours or days you retain, and whether completed files stay on the active disk or are moved elsewhere. There is no universal disk size for a lofi stream: settings and retention vary.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set a retention window. Decide how many hours or days of recordings you need available on the working disk.
- Estimate from your real recording bitrate. Use the OBS recording output’s bitrate, or measure a representative recording, rather than assuming a generic lofi bitrate.
- Pick a destination for completed recordings. Move them to a separate archive destination, such as an external hard drive, or delete recordings that have aged out of your retention window.
- Account for recovery and redundancy. A second location can protect against loss of the working disk, but the necessary capacity depends on bitrate, retention, and budget.
For a rough planning calculation, total file size grows in proportion to bitrate and recording time. Use the measured output and your intended retention period to estimate capacity, then leave headroom rather than planning to fill a disk completely. A segmenting workflow can make files easier to move and prune, but keeping all the segments does not reduce their combined storage use.
Record your own stream in OBS
- Choose the recording destination. In OBS, set the recording path to the disk or folder you intend to use for active recordings. Make sure it has enough free space for your retention window and that completed files can be moved off it.
- Choose a resilient recording format. OBS recommends MKV for recording because an ungracefully stopped recording is less likely to corrupt the entire file. OBS can remux a finished MKV recording to MP4 if another application needs MP4 compatibility. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.
- Check the output settings and make a short test recording. Confirm the recording includes the picture and audio you want to preserve, and check the resulting file’s size and playback before relying on the workflow for a long broadcast.
- Start the recording and monitor disk space. Recording the OBS output creates a local copy, so it continues consuming space while files remain on that disk.
- Move or remove completed recordings on schedule. Follow the retention window you chose: transfer files to the archive destination or delete files that are no longer needed on the active disk.
- Remux only after a recording has finished, if needed. Use OBS’s remux function to make a completed MKV an MP4 when compatibility calls for it. Do not use ordinary MP4/MOV as a substitute for a resilient recording format if interruption recovery matters.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide notes that ordinary MP4 and MOV recordings need finalization and may not be recoverable if writing is interrupted. Fragmented MP4/MOV can provide chunk-level resilience, but compatibility depends on the codec and editing or playback software. For a straightforward OBS workflow, MKV followed by remuxing after completion is the recommended route.

Use segments to make files easier to manage
Timed segments can make long recordings easier to transfer, index, and prune. FFmpeg’s segment muxer can write timed files and a segment list; consult the FFmpeg formats documentation for its options.
- Segments do not save space by themselves. If you retain every segment, their total size will be approximately the same as one continuous recording.
- Boundaries may not be exact. Video segments are cut at keyframes, so a segment may not end precisely at the requested time.
- Pair segmentation with a retention rule. The space benefit comes from moving or deleting older segments, not from splitting the file.
What if you are trying to save someone else’s lofi stream?
The OBS workflow above records the output of a production you control; it does not establish an official, supported viewer-side method for continuously capturing another channel’s stream. Consider the rights and applicable restrictions before making copies. Do not treat YouTube DVR as a full archive: YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, with availability also depending on the device or app version. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common archive problems
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: A 24/7 stream is much longer than YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive guidance. Keep a separate recording for a stream you own instead of relying on the platform archive alone.
- The active disk is filling up: Check the actual recording bitrate and how long files have been retained. Move completed recordings to another destination or delete files outside your retention window.
- A recording is damaged after OBS or the computer stopped unexpectedly: OBS recommends MKV for resilience to ungraceful stoppage. For future recordings, choose MKV and remux completed files to MP4 only when compatibility requires it.
- A segment is longer or shorter than the requested duration: FFmpeg segment boundaries depend on keyframes, so exact timing is not guaranteed. Treat segment duration as a management target, not a precise cut point.
- MP4 or MOV will not open after an interruption: Ordinary MP4/MOV may require finalization and may not be recoverable if writing was interrupted. Use the OBS-recommended MKV workflow for future captures, or evaluate fragmented MP4/MOV only if your codec and editing or playback tools support it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep your own pre-recorded lofi program live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-streaming option—not a replacement for keeping an archive copy of your recordings. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Each slot streams your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
To move a pre-recorded YouTube lofi stream to the cloud, start a StreamNeo account, upload your recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
