Twitch Bitrate Guide: Recommended Settings for Every Resolution

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a practical starting point, use Twitch’s published examples: 6,000 kbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 4,500 kbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps, and 3,000 kbps for 720p at 30 fps. Pair them with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then test your connection and encoder. These are Twitch examples, not a promise that the highest setting will be stable on every setup.

Twitch bitrate settings at a glance

Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines give these example video configurations. Twitch does not state a publication year for the page in the reviewed material.

Output resolution and frame rate Twitch example video bitrate Rate control Keyframe interval
1920×1080 at 60 fps 6,000 kbps CBR 2 seconds
1920×1080 at 30 fps 4,500 kbps CBR 2 seconds
1280×720 at 60 fps 4,500 kbps CBR 2 seconds
1280×720 at 30 fps 3,000 kbps CBR 2 seconds

Use these as platform guidance, then select the highest combination your upload connection and encoder can sustain reliably. Twitch’s guidance puts stability ahead of pushing quality to the point of dropped frames or a strained internet connection.

Choosing resolution and frame rate

1080p at 60 fps

Choose this when you need both fine detail and smooth motion, and your connection and encoder have enough headroom for the 6,000 kbps example. Fast-paced games can benefit from the higher frame rate, but a stable 720p60 stream is preferable to unstable 1080p60.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

1080p at 30 fps

This keeps the 1920×1080 output size while reducing motion smoothness and the example bitrate to 4,500 kbps. It can suit slower games or a setup that can handle 1080p but not the additional encoding demand of 60 fps.

720p at 60 fps

At 1280×720 and 4,500 kbps in Twitch’s example, this is a useful compromise for motion-heavy games when 1080p60 is too demanding. It preserves a 60 fps output while using a lower resolution.

720p at 30 fps

The 3,000 kbps example is the least demanding of these four configurations. It is a reasonable starting point when upload capacity or encoder performance is limited, or when the game does not need 60 fps.

Other resolutions

The cited Twitch examples do not establish official bitrate values for every output, including 480p, 900p, 936p, or 1440p. If you use one of those formats, treat any value you derive by interpolation as an estimate—not an official Twitch recommendation—and validate it with a live test. Higher resolutions generally need more bitrate, while higher frame rates increase encoding work.

Set bitrate against stable upload capacity

Upload speed is not the same as video bitrate: bitrate is the data rate sent to Twitch, while the available connection must also tolerate normal variation and other network traffic. OBS’s overview likewise describes bitrate as dependent on upload speed and the service’s limits. A speed-test result alone cannot confirm that the route to Twitch ingest will remain stable.

  1. Check your available upload capacity under conditions similar to when you stream, including other devices and applications that use the connection.
  2. Choose a Twitch example that leaves practical headroom rather than setting bitrate at the full measured upload rate.
  3. Run a test stream and watch OBS’s connection statistics and Twitch Inspector diagnostics for instability or bitrate variation.
  4. If the stream drops frames because of the connection or becomes unstable, lower bitrate and retest. If needed, step down resolution or frame rate as well.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when estimating a bitrate for troubleshooting. That is an OBS starting point, not a universal rule or a guarantee: actual performance depends on the connection to the selected Twitch ingest server.

Configure OBS and the encoder

Video output and rate control

Set the output resolution and frame rate to the combination you chose, then use the corresponding Twitch example bitrate from the table. Twitch recommends CBR and shows a two-second keyframe interval in its examples. OBS setting names and layout can vary by version, so confirm the selected values in your current OBS output and stream settings rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Encoder choice

Twitch’s guidelines discuss x264 and NVENC examples. They suggest starting x264 at the veryfast preset and experimenting within your computer’s capacity. x264 uses CPU resources; GPU encoding can use dedicated hardware. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware, but capabilities vary by GPU and encoder.

OBS documents platform-specific support in its hardware encoding guide. For example, it says Apple VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon; Intel Mac streaming through VideoToolbox is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. Do not assume an encoder option has the same support or behavior on every system.

Audio settings

Keep audio bitrate separate from the video bitrate in the table. Twitch identifies AAC-LC at 96 kbps as its recommended audio setting for maximum compatibility and 160 kbps as the maximum AAC audio bitrate in its guidelines.

Test and diagnose the stream

After selecting settings, check what is actually reaching Twitch rather than assuming the configured values guarantee a good stream. Twitch’s Twitch Inspector guide describes diagnostics that surface stream bitrate, resolution, and encoder information.

  • Connection instability or network-related dropped frames: Reduce video bitrate and retest. OBS also recommends trying another Twitch server and reviewing network software that could interfere with OBS. On Windows, it suggests considering TwitchTest quality results when choosing a server.
  • Encoder overload or encoding lag: Reduce the encoding load by lowering frame rate or resolution, or use an available hardware encoder if it is supported by your system.
  • Stable connection but image quality is insufficient: Check whether your upload and encoder have headroom before increasing bitrate or resolution; test changes one at a time and monitor the result.
  • Settings look correct but the delivered stream differs: Inspect the stream with Twitch Inspector and confirm the active output and encoder configuration in OBS.

Enhanced Broadcasting and multiple encodes

Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting with Multiple Encodes documentation describes automatic stream configuration and multiple renditions with different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. Its example configuration ranges from 6 Mbps for a 1080p AVC rendition to 200 Kbps for a 160p AVC rendition, and recommends 1920×1080 or 1280×720 at 60 fps for best performance in that described setup.

Keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud

This Twitch bitrate guide is about streaming to Twitch; StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded-video stream live on YouTube, not a Twitch service. With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded video without requiring a computer or home connection to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.

StreamNeo sends the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
