The safest WordPress deployment pipeline separates code from content: Git stores reproducible themes, plugins, configuration templates, and deployment scripts; staging receives every merged change automatically; production is protected by backups, approval, and a single active release. GitHub Actions can provide the workflow, while WP-CLI handles database exports, migrations, URL replacement, cache clearing, and health checks.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
This approach avoids copying a live database over newer orders or editorial work, makes every release traceable, and gives you a tested rollback point. The exact SSH, backup, and file-transfer commands depend on your host, but the control flow below works for self-managed servers and managed WordPress platforms.

What automated WordPress deployment should accomplish
Automation is not simply “push to Git and overwrite the server.” A production-ready process must answer four separate questions:
- Which files are versioned and reproducible?
- How is a change validated before anyone can publish it?
- How does the database move without destroying live content?
- Who can release to production, and how is a failed release reversed?
A practical pipeline uses pull requests for review, automated checks for every proposed change, automatic deployment to staging after a merge, and an operator-approved production promotion. GitHub describes deployment environments as places such as staging, production, or development; environment protection rules can require reviewers, restrict branches, and expose secrets only to approved jobs. Concurrency controls ensure that two deployments do not modify the same environment at once.

WordPress.com recommends automatic staging deployments and manual production deployments. That division is a useful default even when you run WordPress elsewhere.
Keep code in Git and live content in the database
The most important design decision is the boundary between deployable code and mutable WordPress data. Version-control anything that must be recreated exactly on a new server. Treat editorial and transactional data as a separate migration problem.
| Put in Git | Keep out of Git | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Custom themes and child themes | Posts, pages, revisions, and drafts | Code is reproducible; editorial content changes continuously. |
| Custom plugins and mu-plugins | Media uploads | Uploads can be large and are usually synchronized or backed up separately. |
| Composer manifests and lock files | Comments and form submissions | Dependencies need deterministic versions; submissions are production records. |
| Build files and generated asset instructions | Orders, memberships, and other transactions | Deploying over transactional data can lose customer activity. |
| Configuration templates with variable names | Passwords, API tokens, salts, and private keys | Templates are reviewable; secrets belong in an environment secret store. |
| Deployment scripts and WP-CLI migration scripts | A complete production database dump | Scripts can be audited; dumps contain sensitive, changing data. |
A full staging database should not be pushed to production casually. If staging needs realistic data, refresh staging from a production backup under an approved, privacy-conscious procedure, then make code changes there. For a release, migrate only the intentional schema or option changes and preserve production content.
Use a three-environment flow
- Pull request validation: Run syntax, dependency, coding-standard, and security checks against the proposed branch. Do not deploy unreviewed code.
- Staging deployment: Merge to the staging branch. GitHub Actions deploys the merged commit automatically to a staging site that mirrors production versions, PHP settings, enabled extensions, cron behavior, and caching as closely as possible.
- Staging verification: Run browser smoke tests, integration tests, plugin activation tests, and WP-CLI checks. Have a person verify critical journeys such as login, checkout, publishing, search, and forms.
- Production promotion: Start a manually triggered workflow for the exact release commit. A protected production environment pauses the job until an authorized reviewer approves it.
- Post-deployment tasks: Back up first, apply migrations in order, perform URL replacement only when required, flush caches, and run health checks.
Keep the release artifact identical between staging and production. Rebuilding from a moving branch at approval time can introduce code that was never tested.
Prepare the repository and configuration
Use a predictable layout
A repository can contain a custom theme, custom plugins, mu-plugins, and deployment tooling in separate directories. Keep build instructions in a README and pin dependency versions. If assets are compiled, either commit the production build or make the workflow build it from a lock file so staging and production receive the same output.
Template configuration instead of copying secrets
Commit a configuration template that names required variables, but inject values at deployment time. Host keys, SSH private keys, API tokens, database credentials, and salts belong in GitHub environment secrets or your host’s secret manager. Never place a real wp-config.php, dump file, or credential in the repository history; rotating a leaked secret does not remove it from old commits.

Make staging representative
Use the same PHP major version, WordPress core version, database engine, object-cache behavior, and web-server rules as production whenever possible. Give staging its own domain and credentials, disable indexing, and prevent outbound email from reaching customers. Document differences that cannot be eliminated, such as payment gateways in test mode or a smaller server size.
Design the GitHub Actions workflows
Pull-request validation
Use the pull_request event for checks that do not change a shared server. Typical jobs include PHP linting, unit tests, JavaScript build checks, dependency audits, and a scan for accidentally committed secrets. Require these checks to pass before merging.
Automatic staging deployment
Use a push event limited to the staging branch. The deployment job should select the staging environment, where staging-only secrets are available. Upload only the directories that belong to the release, preserve server-managed uploads, and run a post-deploy health check before marking the job successful.
Manual production release
Use workflow_dispatch for production. Restrict the production environment to the release branch, add required reviewers, and set a concurrency group such as wordpress-production with cancellation disabled. This prevents a second release from starting while the first one is running or waiting for approval.

Pin action versions to reviewed releases rather than tracking a floating branch, and review action changes as carefully as application code. The example calls project scripts because file-transfer commands differ by host; those scripts should fail fast, log enough context to diagnose an error, and never echo secret values.

- Allowed deployment branches or tags, such as a protected release branch.
- Production-only SSH keys, API credentials, and database connection details.
- A concurrency group named
wordpress-productionso only one production job can run at a time.
Staging can cancel an older queued deployment when a newer commit arrives, because the newest merged code supersedes it. Production should normally queue rather than cancel, since an approved release may already be changing files or the database.
Test staging before promotion
Automated tests catch different classes of failure. Run them against the deployed staging site, not only against source files.
Browser smoke tests
- Open the homepage, key landing pages, search, navigation, and a representative post.
- Log in as an administrator and a normal user if the site has accounts.
- Submit forms and confirm the expected success and error messages.
- Check responsive layouts and JavaScript interactions at the breakpoints your audience uses.
WordPress and plugin checks
- Run
wp core version,wp plugin list, andwp theme listthrough the staging SSH connection. - Activate or update the changed plugin on staging and inspect the PHP error log.
- Verify scheduled events, REST endpoints, authentication, and object-cache behavior.
- Confirm that no staging email, webhook, analytics event, or payment request reaches a real customer system.
Data-sensitive checks
Test migrations on a copy of the staging database and verify that serialized options, custom post types, taxonomies, and multilingual data remain intact. Record the expected row or schema changes so an unexpected broad update is visible before approval.
Handle the production database deliberately
Git can deploy PHP and files, but it cannot safely infer which production rows should be replaced. Decide whether a release needs no database change, a forward-only migration, or a controlled content synchronization.
Code-only release
For a CSS, template, or isolated plugin change, deploy files and leave production content untouched. This is the lowest-risk release and should be the default.
Schema or option migration
Write an idempotent migration script that can run once, detect its current version, and stop on an error. Apply migrations in a documented order after the files that provide the new code are present. Store the migration version in a dedicated option or table so retries do not duplicate rows.

Content synchronization
When editorial changes must move between environments, define ownership for each content type. A launch may require exporting selected posts or terms, but a blanket staging-to-production database replacement can erase newer live posts, comments, orders, or user accounts. For high-volume or transactional sites, schedule a short maintenance window or use an application-specific import process rather than an opaque database copy.
Use WP-CLI for backups, migrations, and verification
WP-CLI’s official documentation describes it as a tool that “turns WordPress into something you can automate.” Run commands through the same authenticated channel used by the deployment job, and stop the release if a required command fails.
Back up before promotion
wp db export backup.sql
Store the export outside the web root with restricted permissions and a retention policy. Also verify that your host’s file backup covers uploads and any server-side configuration the deployment could change. A backup is useful only if you know where it is and have tested restoration.
Replace URLs safely when a domain changes
wp search-replace 'https://staging.example.com' 'https://example.com' --all-tables
WP-CLI’s search-replace command is designed to account for serialized data. Run it only when the old URL is genuinely present in the database, review its dry-run or reporting options first, and avoid broad replacements for unrelated strings such as email addresses or third-party callback URLs.

wp cache flush

wp option get home

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Promote to production with an approval gate
- Confirm the staging workflow completed for the exact commit you intend to release.
- Review the pull request, automated checks, staging test results, migration list, and rollback plan.
- Start the production workflow with that commit or tag as its
release_ref. - Let the protected production environment pause for required approval.
- Immediately before file changes, export the database and confirm the backup completed.
- Deploy the already-tested artifact, then run migrations in the documented order.
- Perform required URL replacement, cache flushes, and health checks.
- Monitor logs, error rates, queues, forms, and revenue-critical journeys for a defined observation period.
Do not approve two production workflows at once. If an urgent fix is needed while a release is waiting, cancel or reject the waiting run, create a new reviewed commit, and test that commit on staging.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Plan rollback before you need it
Rollback has two parts: restoring code and deciding what to do with data. Re-deploying the previous Git commit can restore PHP, templates, and assets quickly. It cannot automatically undo a destructive database migration or resurrect content overwritten by an import.
- Keep the previous release artifact available until the observation period ends.
- Make migrations backward-compatible where possible so old code can run while a release is reversed.
- Document the exact command to redeploy the prior commit and the person authorized to run it.
- Restore the pre-release database backup only after assessing whether new orders, posts, or comments arrived after the release.
- After rollback, flush caches and repeat health checks; stale cached pages can make a successful rollback appear broken.
Managed WordPress versus self-managed GitHub Actions
A managed platform can remove server plumbing, while a self-managed pipeline offers more control. Treat vendor capabilities as documented features, not guarantees for every plan or region.

Security and reliability safeguards
- Use short-lived or narrowly scoped deployment credentials where the host supports them.
- Restrict production SSH keys by user, command, network, and filesystem permissions.
- Mask secrets in workflow logs and prevent scripts from printing environment variables.
- Pin GitHub Action versions and review updates on staging before changing them in production.
- Test WordPress core, plugin, theme, PHP, and action upgrades on staging; interfaces and behavior change over time.
- Keep a written inventory of cron jobs, webhooks, caches, queues, and external services that a release can affect.
- Alert on failed workflows, unavailable health checks, PHP fatal errors, and backup failures rather than relying on a green deployment badge alone.
Troubleshoot common failed deployments
The workflow succeeds but the old code is visible
Check that the job deployed the intended commit, that the web root matches the configured path, and that opcode, object, host, or CDN caches were cleared. Confirm the changed file exists on the server and that the active theme or plugin is the one you modified.
Production approval never appears
Verify that the job references the exact environment name configured in GitHub, that required reviewers are assigned, and that the workflow is running from an allowed branch or tag. A job blocked before approval has not deployed anything; do not bypass the rule by adding a second unprotected workflow.
Database migration fails halfway through
Stop subsequent steps, preserve the logs, and determine whether the migration is transactional and rerunnable. Restore the pre-release backup only after checking for new live data. Fix the migration on a branch, test it against a restored staging copy, and run the corrected version through the same approval path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Staging content overwrote live content
Disable any automatic full-database import, restore from the most recent usable backup after assessing data loss, and separate code deployment from content synchronization. Add a workflow guard that requires an explicit input and approval for any operation capable of replacing production tables.
Search-replace changed unexpected values
Review the old and new domains, limit tables when appropriate, run a dry run or report first, and inspect serialized options and custom tables. Restore the backup if an unintended value was changed; do not attempt a second blind replacement.
Quick Recap
Implementation checklist
- Repository contains custom code, lock files, configuration templates, and deployment scripts, but no secrets or production dump.
- Pull requests require the relevant automated checks before merge.
- Staging deploys automatically from the staging branch and uses staging-only credentials.
- Staging matches production closely and has indexing, email, payment, and webhook safeguards.
- Production is a protected environment with required reviewers and a release-branch restriction.
- Each environment has a concurrency group; production does not cancel an active release.
- Pre-deployment database and file backups are verified and retained.
- WP-CLI migrations are ordered, idempotent where possible, and tested on a restored staging database.
- URL replacement, cache flushing, and health checks run only when required and are visible in logs.
- A prior artifact, rollback command, and data-recovery decision tree are documented.
- Action versions and host documentation are reviewed whenever WordPress, plugins, PHP, or the hosting interface changes.
