Find the video’s playlist-item ID first—it is different from the video ID—then send an authorized update with the playlist ID, video resource ID, and desired zero-based position. The playlist must be set to Manual ordering for an explicit position to apply.
Use the playlist-items API, not the Live Streaming API
Playlist membership and ordering belong to YouTube Data API v3’s playlistItems methods: list, insert, update, and delete. The Live Streaming API manages broadcast and stream resources; it is not the endpoint for reordering playlist entries. See Google’s PlaylistItems API reference and Live Streaming API reference.
A playlist item represents one occurrence of a video in a playlist. The same video can occur in multiple playlists, and its video ID alone does not identify which playlist entry to move. For an update, use the playlist-item ID returned by playlistItems.list.
What you need before running a Bash script
- A Google Cloud project with YouTube Data API v3 enabled and OAuth credentials suitable for your application.
- An OAuth access token authorized to manage the playlist. The update method documents scopes including
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtubeandhttps://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube.force-ssl. - The playlist ID and the video ID you want to move.
- Permission for the authenticated account to manage that playlist.
- The playlist’s Ordering setting set to Manual if you intend to set an explicit position.
This is an HTTP API workflow invoked from Bash, not a Bash-specific YouTube feature. Keep OAuth tokens private; do not paste them into a public script, repository, or log.

Find the playlist-item ID
First call playlistItems.list for the playlist, then identify the entry whose snippet.resourceId.videoId matches the video you intend to move. Use that entry’s top-level id as the playlist-item ID. YouTube’s playlist implementation guide explains the distinction between the video resource ID and the playlist-item ID.
For a playlist with more results than fit in one response, follow the API’s pagination token and inspect subsequent pages. A video may appear more than once, so match the particular occurrence you mean rather than assuming the first matching video ID is the only one.

Move an item from Bash
The documented update request uses PUT https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/playlistItems. Its body identifies the playlist item, playlist, and video resource, and sets snippet.position to a zero-based index: position 0 is the first item.
- Set the values. Supply your OAuth access token, playlist-item ID, playlist ID, and video ID. The playlist-item ID must come from the selected entry, not from the video URL.
- Check playlist ordering. In YouTube’s playlist settings, use Manual ordering before requesting a specific position. If the playlist is automatically sorted, the API may reject the position change.
- Send the update. The following
curlcommand illustrates the documented HTTP contract. It is an adaptation of the API reference, not a tested script; provide a valid token and IDs before running it.

- Inspect the response. A successful update returns the playlist-item resource. Verify its
snippet.positionand, if needed, list the playlist again to confirm the resulting order. - Handle failures visibly.
--fail-with-bodymakes curl return a failure status for HTTP errors while retaining the API response body, which helps diagnose the rejected request.
Protect fields and plan for quota
An update request can affect mutable properties in the part you submit. When updating snippet, include the required identifiers and preserve any mutable values your workflow needs to retain; omitted mutable properties in an included part may be reset or removed. Check the current update method reference before changing a production playlist.
Google’s current method references list quota costs of 1 unit for playlistItems.list and 50 units each for playlistItems.update, playlistItems.insert, and playlistItems.delete. These are documented API quota costs, not runtime or performance measures; confirm the current quota documentation before deploying a script that makes repeated changes.

Common errors and fixes
