Build and safely replace the playlist on a schedule or when new episodes arrive, then use a tested process to apply the change—typically a supervised FFmpeg restart at a clean episode boundary. Test whether that restart preserves the YouTube live session before relying on it.
How the workflow fits together
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads an ordered text file of media paths. You can loop that input and send the resulting program to YouTube Live. A separate job manages the episode list; another deliberate step makes the active encoder use an updated list.
- Prepare compatible episode files. Make sure clips have compatible streams, codecs and time bases, and check transitions for timestamp gaps or audio artifacts.
- Generate the playlist. Have a scheduled task or file watcher produce the intended order of eligible episodes.
- Apply the update. Test a clean-boundary restart or another supervised process handoff. Do not assume editing the playlist will refresh an already-running input.
- Monitor the stream. Capture FFmpeg logs, watch YouTube stream health and alert if the encoder stops or reports errors.
FFmpeg’s documentation explains the concat demuxer and its inputs, but does not establish that a running concat demuxer reloads a changed script. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg command documentation; check the behavior of your installed build.
Create an FFmpeg concat playlist
Use a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat. If you use the recognized ffconcat format, put its header on the first line:

file '/path/to/episode-002.mp4'Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. The safest approach is to keep media and playlist paths within the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules and use relative paths where practical. The example below includes -safe 0 to permit paths outside those rules; omit it if you do not need that permission.
A representative command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"This is an implementation pattern, not a command tested against a specific media library or FFmpeg build. Replace the paths and credentials locally and verify the available options and output compatibility for your installed FFmpeg release. The example re-encodes video and audio; stream copying may fail or produce discontinuities when source clips have mismatched streams or codecs.
Automate playlist updates without corrupting the file
Write a complete new list before replacing the old one
Your scheduled job or file watcher should build the next playlist from the episodes you want to include, in the intended order. Write it to a temporary file first, then replace the active playlist atomically where the operating system permits. This avoids exposing a partially written script if FFmpeg or another process reads it during an update.

Choose and test how FFmpeg adopts the change
Playlist generation and live adoption are different problems. Documentation does not promise that an active concat input will notice an edited script. Test a method such as restarting FFmpeg at an episode boundary or having a supervisor launch a new process. Check whether the change produces a clean transition, whether YouTube keeps the live session open, and how the system behaves if the new process fails.

Protect the stream key
YouTube supplies a stream URL and stream key in its Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public playlist, published script, shell history or logs. Keep credentials in an appropriately protected local configuration or environment and restrict who can read them.

Match the media and YouTube ingest settings
The concat demuxer expects inputs with matching streams, codecs and time bases. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps across concatenated files, but inaccurate duration metadata can introduce gaps or artifacts. Normalize clips to a consistent stream layout when necessary, then test boundaries using representative episodes, audio and motion.
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or configure the stream and use its encoder URL and key. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS; supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; recommends constant-bitrate encoding; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the format you will actually send rather than copying a bitrate without checking.
YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test. Set resolution and frame rate to suit the program and the available upload connection, then verify the encoder’s stream health before launching a long broadcast.

Test the unattended setup before relying on it
Run the system with the real playlist structure and representative files. YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking audio and video similar to the actual program, monitoring stream health and verifying that a local archive is growing. Its guidance also recommends testing encoder failover. For a 24/7 deployment, include these cases:
- A playlist update while FFmpeg is active, including the exact restart or handoff you intend to use.
- An FFmpeg crash and automatic restart, with logs that make the cause visible.
- A network interruption and recovery.
- A YouTube session end, to confirm what your supervisor does next.
- Episode boundaries, especially audio transitions and timestamp continuity.
Use a process manager or equivalent supervision to restart a stopped encoder, capture logs and alert on encoder errors. The specific supervisor and reconnect configuration depend on your host and deployment; validate them rather than assuming a restart will restore the stream as intended.
Plan around YouTube archives and DVR limits
YouTube says that streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive as a backup. That makes a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast an unreliable archive strategy: maintain a separate local recording plan, and decide whether and how to split or restart live sessions if YouTube archives are important to you. Very long broadcasts may also have limited rewind, and DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If listeners expect to pause or rewind a round-the-clock podcast, explain that limitation and plan the broadcast format accordingly. See YouTube’s DVR guidance for live streams.
