In Dragonflight and newer zones, the Sky Golem and Mechanized Lumber Extractor no longer keep you mounted for herb gathering by default; you need the relevant Herbalism specialization unlock. In pre-Dragonflight zones, Blizzard says those mounts still work as before. Mining has a separate profession path.
First check the zone and gathering type
Blizzard’s March 2026 Midnight Content Update Notes set out different rules for herbs by zone era. They do not establish one universal mounted-gathering rule for every profession, node, or expansion.

For herbs in Dragonflight and newer zones, unlock mounted gathering
Blizzard’s notes say: “Sky Golem and Mechanized Lumber Extractor no longer allow the player to remain mounted while picking herbs by default in Dragonflight and newer zones.” In other words, owning one of these mounts is not enough for mounted herb gathering in those zones.
- Open the Herbalism specialization tree for the relevant expansion.
- Look for the skill that enables gathering herbs while mounted and unlock it through the in-game profession progression.
- Try gathering an herb in the zone again. If you still dismount, confirm that you unlocked the skill for the appropriate expansion and check whether a current patch changed the behavior.
In Khaz Algar player discussions, this is associated with the Botany path. Do not rely on a fixed point threshold from player posts; check the live tree for your character and game version.

For herbs in older zones, try a gathering mount
Blizzard says the Sky Golem and Mechanized Lumber Extractor “will continue to function as before in all pre-Dragonflight content.” If you own either mount and are picking herbs in an older zone, try it there. That older-zone behavior does not make either mount a default solution for herbs in Dragonflight or newer zones.
For mining, check the Mining tree separately
Herb-gathering rules do not automatically apply to ore. Khaz Algar players refer to Mining Fundamentals as a way to gather while mounted, but Blizzard’s cited update note is specifically about picking herbs and does not document Mining Fundamentals’ exact unlock requirements or behavior across older expansions.

- Open the Mining specialization tree for the expansion where you are gathering.
- Check for a mounted-mining skill and its requirements in the live tree.
- Test the relevant ore node after unlocking it. If you dismount, verify the profession path and zone rather than assuming the Herbalism unlock applies.
Do not confuse flight mode with gathering behavior
Blizzard’s Take to the Skies with Skyriding article says Skyriding is available from the start in Khaz Algar and that Steady Flight can be unlocked at maximum level by exploring The War Within zones and completing the campaign. It does not say either flight mode prevents dismounting when gathering.

If you are still being dismounted
- Identify whether the node is an herb or ore and whether the zone is pre-Dragonflight or Dragonflight-and-newer content.
- For newer-zone herbs, verify the Herbalism specialization unlock; for ore, inspect Mining independently.
- For older-zone herbs, test the Sky Golem or Mechanized Lumber Extractor if you have one.
- If the result still conflicts with the applicable rule, confirm the character’s profession progression and check for a patch-specific change. Forum bug reports include conflicting player experiences and do not override Blizzard’s published zone distinction.
