Before buying Pokémon TCG cards from a reseller, match the exact product and promised contents to official information, check the price and seller evidence, and understand the platform’s return and reporting rules. A suspiciously cheap price or “high odds” claim is a reason to pause—not proof of a counterfeit. Even convincing-looking packaging cannot guarantee that a sealed pack is genuine or untouched.
Check what the listing actually promises
Compare the listing with official product information and images. Verify the product name, set, language, edition, packaging, and every included item. Look closely for mismatches between the title, description, and photos, or generic images that do not show the item being sold.
Be cautious with vague labels such as “mystery,” “custom,” or “high odds.” Pokémon’s Japanese official TCG site has warned about independently assembled lottery-style packs whose desirable cards may be unlikely or absent. That notice describes particular Japanese resale circumstances; it illustrates a risk, not the prevalence of such products everywhere. Read Pokémon’s resale warning.
Use price as a warning signal, not a verdict
Compare the asking price with the official suggested retail price where one is available, and with current market context for the exact product. Pokémon Support warns that a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a red flag. As the support article puts it, “If the price of a pack seems too good to be true, it probably is.” A low price alone does not establish that an item is fake; it is a reason to inspect the listing and seller more carefully. See Pokémon Support’s counterfeit guidance.

Assess the seller and the evidence
- Review transaction history and feedback relevant to the specific kind of product, not just the seller’s overall score.
- Check whether the listing explains the item’s condition and source clearly, and whether the return terms are understandable.
- Ask a specific question if provenance or condition is unclear. Treat evasive or contradictory answers as a reason to reconsider.
Pokémon Center Support says Pokémon TCG cards are distributed through existing partnerships with mass-market retailers. That statement is not a complete directory of authorized sellers and does not establish that any particular reseller is authorized. Read Pokémon Center Support’s distribution information.
Be especially cautious with sealed packs and boxes
A sealed-looking wrapper is not a reliable guarantee of authenticity or untouched contents. Pokémon Support cautions that fake booster packs can be difficult to distinguish from real ones: “Often, fake booster packs are very difficult to discern from the real ones.” Its Japanese resale notice also describes packs or boxes searched to remove valuable foil cards. Avoid relying on a particular seal detail as conclusive proof unless Pokémon provides reliable guidance for that exact product.

For a card that seems suspicious, Pokémon Support says it may sometimes be possible to see through a counterfeit card when held to bright light, and recommends consulting a trading-card specialist. This is a check that may help, not a definitive test for every card or sealed product. Official product images can also help compare decks and packaging.
Protect your purchase and understand recourse before checkout
For a marketplace order, keep payment and messages on the platform, save the listing, and check the rules and deadlines that apply to that exact transaction. Protections vary by marketplace, site, region, payment method, and order eligibility.

For example, eBay prohibits counterfeit items, including unauthorized trading-card reprints. Its Money Back Guarantee generally requires that the item be purchased and paid for through eBay and that the buyer meet the applicable terms and deadlines. Off-platform payment does not meet eBay’s checkout requirement. Check the terms for your particular order rather than assuming every transaction qualifies. eBay’s counterfeit item policy and eBay Money Back Guarantee terms are examples, not universal rules for other marketplaces.
What to do if a product seems suspicious
- Pause before opening or altering it. If you may need to show its condition to the seller or marketplace, preserve the item and packaging as they are.
- Document the transaction. Save the listing, order details, seller messages, packaging, and clear photos of the item and any concerning details.
- Contact the seller through the platform. Keep the conversation in the marketplace’s recorded messaging system and describe the specific mismatch or concern.
- Use the marketplace’s reporting or dispute process promptly. Follow the deadlines and instructions for the actual order; do not assume a general policy guarantees a refund.
- Report suspected counterfeit merchandise to Pokémon. Pokémon Support’s form accepts a product description and allows an optional retailer address and website. A local trading-card specialist may also be able to evaluate a suspicious card. Do not resell an item you believe is counterfeit. Contact Pokémon Support.
A quick framework for comparing listings
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Product identity and contents | Do the name, set, language, edition, images, and promised inclusions match official information? |
| Price | Is the price dramatically below suggested retail or out of step with market context for this exact item? |
| Seller and listing evidence | Does the seller provide clear condition and provenance details, relevant feedback, and understandable return terms? |
| Payment and recourse | What checkout, reporting, return, and dispute rules apply to this marketplace, region, and order? |
| Sealed-product risk | Could the contents have been searched, or could the packaging be counterfeit despite looking convincing? |
These checks can reduce risk, but they cannot remotely authenticate every card or establish that every sealed product is genuine and untouched. The consulted official sources publish no named, numeric statistic for Pokémon TCG counterfeit prevalence or scam losses.
