To preserve a PC game, save the files that can actually reinstall it—not just a copy of its installed folder. For a GOG game, that usually means downloading and keeping its offline backup installer. On Steam, the backup feature may help, but it only supports qualifying Steam-managed installs and does not prove a title is free of third-party DRM or online requirements. Check the exact game’s dependencies, keep save files separately, and verify that your backup restores successfully.
First, find out what “DRM-free” means for this game
DRM-free is about technical restrictions on installing, copying, or activating a game; it does not mean every part of the game works without the internet. GOG’s developer Quality Assurance documentation puts its policy plainly: “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” GOG says its games should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether the Galaxy client is installed, or internet availability. Features that inherently use online services, such as multiplayer and leaderboards, are exceptions. GOG developer Quality Assurance documentation and its DRM-free policy explanation describe that distinction.
Do not assume that a storefront label answers every practical question. A game may be DRM-free yet have online-only features; another game may require a launcher, account authentication, online activation, or a periodic check-in. Look up the exact title’s store page and publisher support information before relying on an offline copy.
Choose a backup method that matches the game

Steam’s current instructions and compatibility notes are on its backup and restore support page. Treat any interface labels or steps as subject to change; consult that page when you make the backup.

Back up a GOG game with its offline installer
- Open the game’s entry in your GOG library. Find the offline backup installer files for that title. Interface wording and layout can change, so use the current library interface rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Download every required installer part. Keep all parts together in one clearly named folder. If you want bonus content or other extras, download and store those separately or alongside the installer.
- Allow time for a new build to appear. GOG’s developer documentation says offline installers are generated after builds are published, and an updated installer may take several hours to be produced. If a game has just updated, the new installer may not be available immediately. See GOG’s offline backup installers documentation.
- Copy the folder to separate storage. Keep a second copy if the library is important to you. A second copy helps protect against losing the original files if one storage device fails; the official guidance establishes the purpose of saving the files, not a particular drive type or capacity.
- Verify the backup. When practical, run the installer from the saved copy and confirm that it completes. Then check whether the game launches offline if that is important to you. GOG’s policy is broad, but the game’s online features and any title-specific requirements still matter.
Back up and restore a Steam game carefully
Steam’s backup feature is intended for games that Steam has fully downloaded, installed, and patched. It may not handle titles that depend on third-party installers or downloaders, so check the current Steam backup and restore instructions for the supported workflow and use the feature only when it applies to your game.
When you restore, use Steam’s restore process rather than treating a folder copy as equivalent. A successful restore confirms that the stored files can be used through that feature; it does not certify that the game is DRM-free, that a separate launcher is unnecessary, or that online play and other connected services will work.

Steam Offline Mode is also not a guarantee that every game will launch offline. Steam’s Offline Mode guidance notes that a game may need updates before it can launch in that mode. If offline play matters, make sure the game is updated and test the specific title before you depend on it without a connection.
Check for launchers, activation, and online-only features
A backup preserves files; it cannot remove a dependency built into the game or imposed by its publisher. Check the individual title’s store page and support documentation for launcher software, account sign-in, online activation, periodic checks, and connected features.

- Offline mode conditions: EA’s help page says its offline mode works for 30 days since the last online launch. EA also documents first-launch and other conditions, so the 30-day rule is a client-specific product rule, not a promise about every game or a universal offline limit. Check EA’s offline mode guidance for the current requirements.
- Online features: Multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud saves, achievements, and other account-connected features can behave differently offline or require a service connection even when the single-player game itself runs without one.
Keep save files separately from the game
A game installer or installation backup may not include your local saves. There is no single save-file location that applies to every PC game: the path depends on the title and sometimes its publisher or launcher. Consult the game’s support page or ask its developer for the correct save location, then make a separate copy of the save files you want to preserve. Cloud saves can be useful, but they depend on the relevant account and service and should not be your only copy if you need an independent backup.

Verify the backup before you need it
- Restore or install from the saved copy. Use the game’s installer or the storefront’s supported restore process, not only the original live installation.
- Check the result. Confirm that installation completes and the game starts. If you need it to work without internet, test that condition explicitly.
- Investigate failures by dependency. A missing installer part can prevent installation; a launcher or account requirement can block startup; an update requirement can prevent offline launch; and online-only services can remain unavailable even when the game starts.
- Keep a separate second copy. Store it independently from the copy you use day to day, and refresh it when you want to preserve a newer game build or updated saves.
