How to Fix Steam Download and Update Problems

A symptom-first guide to Steam downloads that are stuck, slow, or failing—and updates that will not finish.

For a Steam download that is stuck, slow, or failing—or an update that will not finish—start by checking its status and available storage, then use Steam’s built-in cache, library-repair, file-verification, and download-region tools as the symptom suggests. These fixes address different causes, so work through the relevant steps rather than changing everything at once.

Start with the download status, queue, and free space

Open Steam’s Download Manager and note the exact error text and whether the game is actively transferring, paused, or waiting in the queue. A queued update is different from a transfer that has stopped, and the error message can point to a server or installation problem.

  • Check whether another download is ahead of the game, and whether downloads are paused or scheduled for a later time.
  • Review any bandwidth limit in Steam’s download settings.
  • Make sure the library’s destination drive has enough free space for the update.
  • If only one game is affected, begin with that game’s files and library rather than changing settings for every download.

Steam’s Download Manager can pause and reorder downloads, set bandwidth limits, and schedule updates; see Steam’s guide to managing downloads and updates. Restart Steam and your computer before moving on. Steam lists restarting as an initial step for installation and update errors in its update and installation troubleshooting guide.

Clear Steam’s download cache if a download will not start or stay on track

A corrupted or stale download cache can interfere with downloads. Clearing it is a reversible client-level step: installed games are not affected, but Steam will ask you to log in again. Menu wording can vary by operating system or client version.

  1. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  2. Select Clear Download Cache and confirm.
  3. Sign in again when prompted, then retry the download.

Steam describes this option for games that will not download or start in its download-cache instructions.

Repair the library folder if an update cannot write files

If Steam reports a disk-write or installation error, or an update repeatedly fails while applying files, the selected library folder may have a write-permission problem. Repair the affected library folder rather than verifying every game.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Open the more-options menu for the library containing the game.
  3. Select Repair Folder, then retry the update.

The repair targets the selected library’s folder permissions. Steam’s installation and update guidance gives this path; labels may differ slightly across client versions.

Verify files when one game’s installation may be damaged

File verification checks the installed files for a particular game and can replace missing or damaged content. Use it when the trouble appears limited to one game, rather than as a general fix for slow network transfers.

  1. Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
  2. Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  3. Let the check finish before launching the game or starting another verification.

The check can take several minutes. Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification normally because local configuration files should not be replaced. Do not verify multiple games at once, or run the check during intensive disk or CPU work. See Steam’s file-verification guidance.

Try a nearby download region for slow speeds or content-server errors

Steam downloads come from content servers, and a regional server can be slow, overloaded, or temporarily faulty. Changing regions is a low-risk way to test that possibility; it will not repair local file permissions or a failing drive.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  2. Choose a different region that is still relatively close to you.
  3. Retry the download and compare the result; test one region at a time and switch back if it is slower.

For the specific message “No Steam content servers are currently configured to deliver content for this game,” Steam recommends choosing the closest region—or the next closest if that region is already selected. Its guidance for that error is at Steam’s content-server troubleshooting page. For a server reported as unavailable or too busy, see Steam’s server-availability guidance.

Check the units before diagnosing a slow Steam download

Steam may display transfer speed in bytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. One byte equals eight bits, so the figures can look different even when they describe the same rate. Check Steam’s speed display and compare equivalent units before concluding that your connection is underperforming.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

A local network-properties panel may show the speed of the connection between your device and router, not the speed of your internet plan. If the measured download still seems unexpectedly low after accounting for units, check the selected region and whether security or filtering software is affecting traffic. Steam explains the unit difference and connection checks in its slow-download and content-server guide.

Investigate network, security software, or storage when Steam’s tools do not help

Network hardware, firewalls, antivirus software, and other programs that monitor or modify network or disk activity can interfere with downloads and updates. If the Steam-side steps have not helped, restart your modem or router and review relevant operating-system, driver, firewall, and security-software settings. Avoid broadly disabling security protections as a routine fix; advanced network or firewall changes may need help from your security-software provider or a technical specialist.

Consider another drive only when there is evidence that the current destination is part of the problem—for example, persistent write errors, insufficient space, or trouble isolated to that drive. Steam says an alternate hard drive can help isolate a persistent installation or update issue, and games can be moved between Steam library folders without downloading them again. An external SSD is therefore an optional way to test or expand storage, not a remedy for a regional-server or network problem. See Steam’s installation and update guidance and download-management guide.

Reinstall Steam only after safer fixes, and protect game data

Steam lists reinstalling the client to the same location as a possible fix for damaged Steam client or service files, and says that doing so preserves installed games. However, Steam also warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. Do not treat “uninstall and reinstall” as a casual next step: follow Steam’s current instructions for reinstalling to the same location and protect your game data before removing anything. See Steam’s update and installation guidance.
