To back up a Nintendo Switch 2 save to Nintendo’s cloud, you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a game that supports Save Data Cloud. Open the game’s Save Data Cloud menu and choose Back Up Save Data. To restore, choose Download Save Data—but first check the timestamps, because downloading replaces that game’s current local save. If both consoles are available and you want to move a save without NSO, use Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer instead.

Back up a save to Nintendo’s cloud

Cloud saves require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and not every game supports Save Data Cloud. Nintendo says automatic backup is enabled for compatible software when membership begins. You can also back up a save manually:

  1. From the HOME Menu, highlight the game and press + or −.
  2. Select Save Data Cloud, then choose the user whose save you want to back up.
  3. Select Back Up Save Data.

You can reach the same option through System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud; select the user and game, then Back Up Save Data. Automatic backup can be adjusted for individual games and users. If the game’s menu reports that Save Data Cloud is unsupported, that game cannot use this cloud backup service. Check the game’s own menu rather than assuming support.

Restore a cloud save safely

Restoring downloads the cloud copy to the console. Before doing so, compare the most recent console and cloud save timestamps: choose the copy with the progress you intend to keep. Nintendo’s guidance is to back up manually if the console save is newer, or download if the cloud save is newer.

  1. From HOME, highlight the game and press + or −.
  2. Select Save Data Cloud, then choose the user.
  3. Select Download Save Data and follow the prompts.

Alternatively, use System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, choose the user and game, then select Download Save Data. Automatic download is also available when enabled. Nintendo says the console can download newer cloud data while in Sleep Mode; leave it in Sleep Mode until the download finishes.

Important: downloading replaces the existing local save for that game. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Do not download until you have confirmed which copy has the progress you want to preserve. Read Nintendo’s cloud-save download instructions.

Move a save directly between nearby consoles

If you have both consoles and want to move a save, Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Both consoles must be connected to the internet, near each other, and have users linked to the same Nintendo Account.

  1. On the source console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console.
  2. Choose the user and save data to send, then follow the prompts.
  3. On the target console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Receive Save Data.

This is a move, not a second backup: sending the save deletes it from the source console. If the target already has save data for that game, proceeding with the overwrite replaces it, and Nintendo says the overwritten save cannot be recovered. Use cloud backup when you want to retain a separate cloud copy or recover without the original console; use transfer when both consoles are present and moving the save is the goal. See Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer instructions.

Saves are tied to the user

Nintendo says cloud save data is unique to each user and cannot be transferred between users. For a nearby-console move, the same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on each console.

Switch and Switch 2 compatibility

Nintendo says Nintendo Switch software save backups can be shared between Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch when the same Nintendo Account is used. A Switch 2 Edition save may be accessed on a Nintendo Switch, but Switch 2-exclusive enhancements and content require a Switch 2. See Nintendo’s guidance on playing games across multiple consoles.

NSO expiration and access to backups

If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, access to cloud backups is blocked. Nintendo’s Switch 2 download guidance says previous backups can be accessed again if you resubscribe within 180 days. That is the stated recovery window; do not assume backups remain accessible indefinitely after membership lapses.
