First confirm the correct save location for your game, platform, and edition; there is no single path that works for every PC game. Keep this copy independent of cloud sync, which can fail or leave you with an older version.
1. Find the right save location
Check the game publisher’s support page or documentation for the save location for your specific game and platform. Steam does not determine where third-party games store saves: the developer does. Steam lists several common locations across Windows, macOS, and Linux, but those are examples, not a universal path. On Windows, user folders such as Documents may also have been moved from their default locations.
If you cannot find official instructions, Steam Support recommends checking the game’s Steam community information, the developer’s website, or contacting the developer. Do not assume saves live inside the Steam installation folder.

2. Make a separate copy before modding
- Save your current progress, then close the game. Closing it before copying is a sensible precaution so files are less likely to change during the copy; it is not a universal vendor requirement.
- Open the save folder identified by the game’s official instructions and copy the relevant save files to a separate location. Give the copy a clear name, such as Game name – saves before mods – date.
- Keep the original files in place. Check that the copied files are present and readable before installing anything.
- Store the copy somewhere distinct from the active save folder. A different folder on the same drive may be enough for a basic recovery point; an external drive or a suitable cloud-storage service can provide another option. No particular brand, drive, or service is required.
Bethesda Support gives a concrete example for Fallout 4 on PC: the default save path is C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves. Its instructions recommend copying the desired saves into a separate folder, such as “Save backups,” and moving them back to the home directory to restore them. That path and folder name apply to this Fallout 4 example only, not to other games.

3. Check whether the mod affects more than saves
Read the game’s and mod’s instructions before deciding what else to copy. Depending on the game and mod, relevant files may include configuration settings, mod lists, or profiles. Back up these items only when the instructions identify them as important; save files alone may not capture every setting you would want to recover.
Steam’s Backup Feature is for compatible installed game files, not a complete backup of all player data. Steam says it works with games fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam. For Valve-created games, the feature does not include saves, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files; some third-party games are not compatible with it either. Keep a separate copy of relevant saves and other user files.

4. Keep cloud sync as an extra layer
Steam Cloud can store save games and other user data for games that support it, but it should not be your only pre-mod safety copy. Steam Support says recent progress may be missing if Steam could not sync before exit or if an older version was uploaded. Confirm that the game supports cloud saves and that synchronization has completed, then retain your separate copy. Steam Support also says it cannot recover lost saves.

5. Restore a backup carefully
- Close the game before restoring files.
- Use the game’s documentation to confirm the save location for your version and platform.
- Copy the selected backup files back to that location, following any game-specific restore instructions.
- Before replacing files, make a copy of the current saves too if you may want to keep them. Replacing a file can overwrite existing progress; Bethesda’s save-migration instructions explicitly warn that transferring a save can overwrite an existing save.
Bethesda’s Fallout 4 backup instructions describe moving the backed-up saves back into their home directory. For other games, use that game’s own documented restore process rather than assuming the Fallout 4 steps apply.

Save backup versus game-install backup
A save backup preserves player progress; a game-install backup copies compatible installed game files. They solve different problems. Steam’s Backup Feature does not necessarily include saves or other user files, so do not treat it as a substitute for copying the data your game or mod instructions identify.
If you are moving a Steam installation rather than protecting mod-sensitive data, Steam provides separate instructions for that process: Moving a Steam Installation and Games.
