Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said in November 2025 that the Steam Machine would be priced in line with the PC market, not sold at a deliberate loss to build market share. Valve had not announced a price then. It later announced US prices starting at $1,049 in June 2026—far above the $500 hopes and roughly $800 speculation circulating in 2025.
What Valve said about subsidizing the Steam Machine
In a Friends Per Second interview transcribed by TechRadar on November 24, 2025, Skill Up asked Griffais whether Valve would take a large loss on the hardware to grow its market share. Griffais answered: “No, it’s more in line with what you might expect from the current PC market. Obviously, our goal is for it to be a good deal at that level of performance.”
That was a pricing approach, not a price announcement. Griffais did not give a dollar figure, and “a good deal” was Valve’s aim relative to performance—not a promise to undercut consoles or every comparable PC.
What the 2025 price guesses got wrong
At the time, TechRadar described $500 as a hoped-for price and discussed roughly $800, or potentially more, as speculation based on a comparable self-build. Neither figure came from Valve. They were estimates made before the company announced its price, not confirmed launch prices.

- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The later announcement makes the gap plain: Valve’s announced US prices were substantially higher than those early hopes and estimates. The explanation reported at the time was that component costs—especially RAM and storage—had changed significantly, and some parts were unavailable at any price. Valve said the prices reflected component costs it had secured over the preceding six months, according to PC Gamer’s June 22, 2026 report.

- RYZEN 7 H 255 CPU - The Ryzen 7 H 255 is a chip from the Hawk Point family and is an upgraded version of the older Ryzen 7 8745H and has 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) that run at up to 4.9 GHz, together with the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU. Unlike Zen 3, Zen 4 offers AVX512 support along with other improvements such as larger caches/registers/buffers across the board.
- GAMING PC - The Radeon 780M (12 CUs / 768 shaders, up to 2,600 MHz) can drive multiple displays simultaneously with a resolution of up to 8K. Hardware encoding and hardware decoding of the most common video codecs (AV1, AVC, HEVC) is also no problem; playing the latest games on FSR settings without issues.
- WHY CHOOSE DDR5 5600MHz DUAL CHANNEL (2×16GB): With a 5600MHz clock—a 17% frequency uplift over 4800MHz—this kit delivers massive bandwidth gains that elevate real-world performance. Gamers enjoy higher minimum FPS and less stutter in open-world and sim titles for a smoother competitive experience. Video editors and 3D creators benefit from faster 4K/8K timeline scrubbing, quicker renders in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and swifter asset loading. For AI/LLM workloads, the superior throughput reduces I/O bottlenecks, cuts token generation latency, and accelerates model fine-tuning by keeping processing cores fed with data—so you wait less and create more.
- 32GB DDR5 RAM + 512GB SSD - The K12 mini computer is equipped with Dual 16GB (Total 32GB) SO-DIMM DDR5 5600MHz memory sticks. 512GB PCIE 4.0 SSD Drive with 3x M.2 2280 Expansion slots. Each slot capable of reading up to 8TB. (24TB MAX)
- QUAD SCREEN 4K DISPLAY SUPPORT - K12 Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and USB Type-C Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
| Configuration | Announced US price |

| 512 GB Steam Machine | $1,049 |
| 2 TB Steam Machine | $1,349 |
| 512 GB Steam Machine with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| 2 TB Steam Machine with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
The Steam Controller is included only in the two listed bundles; it is not a required accessory. These figures are announced US prices, not a guarantee of the price or availability elsewhere.
What Valve says is part of the value
Griffais argued that the Machine’s value is not just a parts list. He pointed to its small form factor, quiet operation, HDMI CEC integration, wireless design, and four antennas intended to provide a good experience with four Bluetooth controllers. He also described the goal of delivering a good deal at the system’s performance level.

These are Valve’s stated design and value points, not independent test results. The interview does not quantify how much they are worth, and it does not supply an independently tested parts list showing what a comparable self-built PC would cost. That makes a precise value verdict against a DIY PC difficult to support from these figures alone.
The comparison Griffais described was with the current PC market. Without current, like-for-like pricing and performance evidence, the interview does not establish that the Steam Machine is a better deal than a console or a self-built PC.

How to interpret the reservation queue
Valve’s Steam Machine Limited Drop Program terms described registration from June 22 to June 25, 2026, with randomized selection into a reservation queue. A reservation is not the same as a confirmed purchase opportunity. PC Gamer reported on July 29, 2026 that Valve was fulfilling orders daily and expected to offer purchase opportunities to people in the queue by the end of 2026; that was an expectation, not a guarantee for every person waiting.
For a live purchase decision, check the product page and the current reservation or ordering information for your region. The terms say prices may change and vary by location; queue updates do not establish that a particular buyer can order now.
What the price means for buyers
The key change is from uncertainty to a concrete announced US price: the 2025 interview established that Valve was not planning a console-style subsidy, while the 2026 announcement set the 512 GB model at $1,049. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the value a buyer places on the compact design and living-room-oriented integration, weighed against comparable PC options available at the time of purchase. The available reporting does not prove that the Steam Machine beats those alternatives on price.
