Back up what the game stores on your device, confirm that the copy is current, and check the publisher’s shutdown notice for any separate export or transfer option. A platform cloud save does not necessarily include characters, items, rankings, or other progress held only on the game’s servers.
First, find out where your progress is stored
“Online game” can mean different things: a game may keep a save on your device and sync it, store some progress on publisher servers, or require those servers to run at all. A Steam or Nintendo cloud backup covers only eligible platform save data; it does not establish that server-held progress can be exported.
Before making a copy, check the game’s official shutdown announcement and support pages for an export, migration, account-transfer, or offline-play procedure. Availability is specific to the game. Do not assume that a local or platform-cloud copy will preserve server-only data or let the game run after shutdown.
Make a separate copy and verify it
- Check support for the exact game. Confirm that the game supports the platform’s cloud-save service, and identify whether the save is local, platform-cloud, or publisher-server data.
- Let the game and platform finish syncing. Check for a sync status or last-backup timestamp. A cloud feature being enabled does not prove that the latest session has uploaded.
- Preserve the current copy before restoring or replacing anything. If you can access a local save file, copy it to a separate location and leave the original untouched. A USB drive can store a locally accessible file, but cannot retrieve server-only progress or make a proprietary save usable after shutdown.
- Compare timestamps before resolving conflicts. Use the date and time shown by the platform alongside your own knowledge of the latest progress. Do not select or download a version until you know which one is newer; restoring can overwrite the other copy.
- Check the shutdown notice again for instructions and deadlines. If it provides an official export or migration tool, follow that title-specific process while the service is still available.
Steam on PC: check Steam Cloud and the local save
Confirm the game uses Steam Cloud
Check the game’s Steam Store page for the Steam Cloud indicator. Developers choose which files a game uploads, and many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves. Even when the feature is supported, it does not prove that every save or all online progress is included. Steam’s guidance on Steam Cloud explains its scope and limitations.

Wait for sync and handle conflicts carefully
Let synchronization finish before closing Steam or moving to another device. If Steam reports a cloud conflict, compare the dates shown and select the version that matches your latest actual progress. Launching without resolving a conflict can lose progress. Keep an independent copy of any accessible local save before changing versions.
Look for local save files

These folders can contain files indexed by your Steam account ID and the game’s AppID; finding a folder there does not prove it contains the complete save. Developers may store saves elsewhere. If the location is unclear, check the game’s official support information or contact its developer. Copy identified save files to a separate location and preserve the original.
Do not confuse an installation backup with a save backup
Steam’s “Backup game files” feature is not a universal save export. Steam says backups of Valve-created games omit saved games and custom content, while save locations for other developers vary. Some third-party-installer and third-party free-to-play or MMO-style games are incompatible with that installation-backup tool. See Steam’s backup guidance before relying on it.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: use Save Data Cloud for compatible games
Check eligibility and membership
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and works only with compatible software. Check the game’s software menu, eShop information, or Nintendo Store listing for the Save Data Cloud indicator. The availability and steps are title-specific; see Nintendo’s backup and restore instructions and compatibility information.
Back up the save
For a supported game, use either of these routes:
- On HOME, highlight the game and press + or −. Select Save Data Cloud, choose the user, then select Back Up Save Data.
- Alternatively, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, choose the user and title, then back up the save.
Save data is user-specific and cannot be transferred between users. Nintendo says compatible saves can be backed up or downloaded between Switch and Switch 2 using the same Nintendo Account.

Check the timestamp before downloading or restoring
Under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, check the last backup time before treating the cloud copy as current. Nintendo recommends checking the internet connection, automatic-backup settings, and whether the title supports cloud saves. If the console has a newer save, Nintendo says you can manually back it up by selecting Back Up Save Data. A cloud download can overwrite the console’s current save, and that overwritten data cannot be recovered, so compare versions first.
If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, access to cloud backups is unavailable. Nintendo says resubscribing within 180 days restores access. The official guidance cited here does not establish a general method to export Switch save files to microSD or USB; do not treat copied installation files or screenshots as save backups.

Choose a backup route that remains useful
When more than one option exists, compare what each one actually preserves and whether you can still use it after the game or platform service changes.
- Coverage: Does the game support this route, and does it cover local saves, platform-cloud files, or publisher-server data?
- Access: Does retrieving the copy depend on a platform account, subscription, or game service that may no longer be available?
- Usability: Can the save be restored or read without the original game service? A stored file is not a guarantee that the game will accept it after shutdown.
- Overwrite risk: Could restoring one version replace a newer local or cloud copy? Compare timestamps and make an independent copy first.
