Make a separate copy of your Hytale save before opening it in a new chapter or patchline. First determine whether the save is a dedicated-server universe or a local player save, then copy the correct data while the game or server is closed. Hytale’s server updater can make a pre-update backup only when its backup directory is configured; local-player storage varies by launcher patchline, so server instructions should not be applied to a single-player installation.
This guide reflects the Chapter I: Out of the Breach update announced on October 12, 2026. Update behavior and folder locations can change, so confirm the paths shown by the launcher and the current official documentation before moving or replacing files.

A chapter update can change the game version, launcher data layout, or compatibility of mods and saved data. The safest sequence is to create and verify a separate copy first, and only then allow the save to open on the new version. Do not assume that an update automatically protects every local save: the documented automatic backup feature applies to dedicated servers and depends on configuration.
- Close Hytale and its launcher, or stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Identify the save type: a local player save or a dedicated-server installation.
- Identify the patchline that owns the save. Release and non-release patchlines may use different launcher directories.
- Copy the complete relevant save data to a different folder or an optional external hard drive for game backups.
- Label the copy with the date, game version or patchline, and world name.
- Confirm that the copy contains the expected files before launching the updated version.
Keep the original untouched until the updated game has loaded successfully. If troubleshooting becomes necessary, first make another copy of the current state so you can return to both the pre-update and post-update versions.

Identify which kind of Hytale save you have
Dedicated-server universe
For a dedicated server, Hypixel Studios’ Hytale Server Manual identifies the universe/ directory as the location for world and player save data. This is the data that must be preserved for the playable world and its player progress.
Local-player save
A local save is managed through the launcher’s user-data area rather than the dedicated-server layout. The official material does not provide a complete, universal single-player copy-and-restore recipe, so do not search for a server-style universe/ folder and assume it is your local world. Use the launcher’s current user-data location and the support instructions for the installed version.

Update 5 changed where launcher data is stored. Its official notes say Release continued using %HYTALE%/UserData/, while non-release patchlines moved into their own directories beneath %HYTALE%/data/. The migration duplicated existing non-release data. Consequently, two folders can look similar while belonging to different patchlines; copy the folder associated with the version you actually play.
Read the complete Hytale Patch Notes – Update 5 when your installation uses a non-release channel, and check the launcher’s displayed version before selecting a folder.

Dedicated-server backup methods
Use the updater’s pre-update backup when it is configured
The server manual documents a setting named RunBackupBeforeUpdate. It is shown as true by default, but it runs a full server backup before an update only when a backup directory has been configured. An enabled-looking setting without a usable destination is not proof that a backup was written.
| Setting or check | What it covers | Condition or limitation |
|---|---|---|
RunBackupBeforeUpdate |
Requests a full server backup before an update | Shown as true by default; requires a configured backup directory |
| Backup directory | Destination for the updater’s backup | Must be configured; the setting alone does not identify a usable destination |
BackupConfigBeforeUpdate |
Configuration files, including config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json |
Configuration backup is separate from world and player save data |
universe/ |
World and player save data | Must be present in the backup you intend to use for progress recovery |
Before relying on the automatic route, inspect the server configuration and determine the exact backup directory it uses. After a test or scheduled update, confirm that a new backup exists there and that it contains universe/, not only JSON configuration files. The manual establishes the option and its directory prerequisite, but it does not guarantee that every server installation has a correctly configured destination or that every run completes successfully.
Make an independent copy of the server data
A separate manual copy gives you an additional recovery point and does not depend on the updater’s job finishing. Perform it while the server process is stopped so files are not changing during the copy.
- Stop the server gracefully and wait until its process has exited.
- Open the server installation directory and locate
universe/. - Copy the entire
universe/directory, including its subfolders, to a destination outside the live server folder. - If you need to recreate server access rules after a failure, copy the configuration files separately as well. Include
config.json,permissions.json,bans.json, andwhitelist.jsonwhen they exist. - Give the copy a descriptive name such as the world name plus the date and pre-update version.
- Open the copied folder and verify that it is not empty and that the expected
universe/hierarchy is present. - Store a second copy on another volume, such as an external hard drive, if losing the primary computer would also lose the backup. An external drive is optional; no particular make, capacity, or performance is required by Hytale.
Do not copy only the configuration files when your goal is to preserve progress. They can restore administrative settings, but they are not a replacement for the world and player data in universe/.

Backing up a local-player save
Find the current user-data directory
For Release, Update 5 notes retain %HYTALE%/UserData/ as the launcher data location. Non-release patchlines use separate directories below %HYTALE%/data/. The notes also describe duplication during migration, so an older copy may remain beside the active one.
| Launcher channel | Location described in Update 5 notes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Release | %HYTALE%/UserData/ |
Use the current Release user-data directory shown by your installation. |
| Non-release patchline | A patchline-specific directory under %HYTALE%/data/ |
Match the folder to the exact non-release version displayed by the launcher. |
| After migration | Existing non-release data was duplicated | Do not choose between similarly named copies by guesswork; verify the active patchline first. |
These locations describe launcher data storage, not a guaranteed single-player world subfolder name. The reviewed official sources do not establish a complete local restore walkthrough or a universal folder you can safely overwrite. If the launcher or current Hytale support page identifies a more specific save directory for your version, follow that version-specific guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Copy the local data without overwriting it
- In the launcher, note the active channel and version.
- Exit Hytale and the launcher completely so no save is being written.
- Open the corresponding Release or non-release user-data directory.
- Use modified dates, world names, and the launcher’s version information to identify the active save rather than selecting the newest-looking folder blindly.
- Copy the complete candidate save data to a separate location. Preserve the folder structure and do not move the original.
- Label the copy with the channel, version, world name, and date.
- Open the copy only to confirm that files and subfolders are present; do not edit or rename unknown files.
If you cannot establish which directory is active, stop before updating and consult the official support instructions for that installed version. A confidently copied wrong folder is still an unusable backup.
How to use a backup after an update problem
Server recovery
Preserve the failed server state before attempting recovery. Stop the server, make a copy of its current installation, and record which patchline produced the problem. This gives you a rollback point if the attempted restore is incomplete.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
- Stop the server and keep the failed installation unchanged as a diagnostic copy.
- Verify that the backup you selected contains
universe/and is labeled for the intended pre-update version. - Use the current Hytale server documentation for the supported restore procedure for your server version; the manual’s backup settings do not, by themselves, document every replacement step.
- Restore world and player data separately from administrative configuration when necessary. Do not mistake a copy of
config.jsonor the permissions files for a world backup. - Start the server on the matching patchline and check the intended world and player progress before allowing further updates.
If the restored world opens, stop and make a fresh backup of that known-good state before experimenting with mods, settings, or another update.

Local-player recovery
Because the official sources reviewed here do not specify a universal local overwrite procedure, do not paste a backup over an unknown live directory. Keep the current data as a separate copy, identify the exact active user-data path for your launcher version, and follow the version-specific Hytale support instructions. If support does not clearly identify the restore action, ask for guidance rather than deleting or renaming folders that may belong to another patchline.
Verify that a backup is usable
A backup is useful only if you can identify it and its contents. Use this checklist before launching the updated game:
- The copy is outside the live server or launcher directory.
- The label records the date, world, and game channel or version.
- A dedicated-server copy contains the complete
universe/directory. - Any configuration copy is clearly separate and includes only the files you intend to preserve.
- The copy has a plausible modification date and non-zero contents.
- You know which patchline created it and have not mixed Release and non-release folders.
- A second copy exists if the original computer is not a safe place to keep the only backup.
For a high-value world, periodically perform a test recovery in a separate server or data directory using the current official instructions. Do not test by replacing your only live save.

Common mistakes and fixes
| Problem | Why it happens | Safer fix |
|---|---|---|
| The updater setting is enabled but no backup appears | RunBackupBeforeUpdate needs a configured backup directory. |
Check the destination in the server configuration, then make and verify an independent copy before updating. |
| Only JSON files were saved | Configuration backup was confused with world backup. | Preserve the complete universe/ directory for server progress; retain configuration files separately. |
| The wrong local folder was copied | Release and non-release patchlines use different locations, and migration duplicated data. | Match the folder to the launcher’s active channel and version before copying. |
| The save was opened before a backup was made | The new version may write changes immediately. | Close the game, copy the current state now, and keep both the pre-update copy if available and the newly changed state. |
| A restore overwrote the only copy | The backup was pasted directly into the live directory. | Always preserve the live state first and restore into the documented location only after confirming the patchline. |
| A backup exists but cannot be identified | Folder names lack dates, versions, or world names. | Adopt a consistent label containing all three before making future updates. |
Manual copy or automatic updater backup?
Dedicated-server operators can use both methods, but they solve different risks.
| Criterion | Manual copy | Updater backup |
|---|---|---|
| Destination | You choose a separate folder or optional external drive. | Requires the server’s backup directory to be configured. |
| Timing | You control when the server is stopped and copied. | Runs before an update when the option and destination are working. |
| What to verify | Confirm the copied data includes universe/ and is labeled. |
Confirm a new backup was created and includes save data, not only configuration. |
| Extra recovery point | Can be retained independently of the updater’s files. | May be the only copy unless you make another one. |
The automatic option is convenient, but the documented prerequisite and the need to verify completion make an independent copy prudent before a major chapter transition.
Why Chapter I makes the timing important
Hytale’s official Chapter I: Out of the Breach announcement was published October 12, 2026. Chapter context does not itself provide a universal local backup procedure, and the announcement should not be read as a promise that every save or mod will be migrated identically. Treat the chapter launch as a version boundary: identify the active patchline, preserve the save first, and retain the old copy until the updated version has been checked.
Update 5 also documents launcher support for older versions, including returning to Update 4 when mods were incompatible. That support can help isolate a compatibility problem, but it does not remove the need to keep an untouched save copy. A rollback attempt should use the patchline associated with the backup rather than a merely similar folder.
Quick Recap
Quick pre-update checklist
- Is this a local save or a dedicated-server universe?
- Which launcher channel and exact version owns it?
- Has Hytale or the server been closed before copying?
- For a server, does the copy contain
universe/? - Is the updater backup directory configured if you rely on
RunBackupBeforeUpdate? - Are configuration files being kept separately from world data?
- Is the copy outside the live installation and labeled with date, world, and version?
- Do you have another copy before launching the chapter update?
