Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest way to move an indie game to a new device is to treat the save as a separate piece of data. First confirm that the particular game supports the platform’s cloud service, then let the old device finish syncing. Where possible, keep an independent copy of the known save files, and do not erase or trade in the old device until the new installation opens the expected progress.
Installing the game again, moving a cartridge, or copying a general game library does not guarantee that its save will follow. Save support is decided title by title, and a cloud service may synchronize only one current state rather than create a permanent archive.

What actually moves when you change devices?
A game installation contains program data. A save contains your progress, settings, profiles, or other user-specific data. They are often stored separately, sometimes in a platform-managed cloud location and sometimes in a folder chosen by the game developer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction matters most with small or independently published games. A title may support a storefront’s cloud system, use its own account, save only locally, or support different features on different platforms. There is no universal save format that lets a Windows file be dropped onto a console, or a Switch save be copied to a PC.

- Cloud synchronization can move a supported save after you sign in on the replacement device, but it depends on the individual game and can involve conflicts.
- Nearby console transfer can move a compatible console save directly when both consoles and the required account conditions are available.
- Manual file copy gives a PC player a separate copy of known files, but only the game’s own instructions can establish which files are valid and portable.
Use the method that matches the game, platform, and account. If any of those are unknown, find the game’s official support instructions before deleting the old installation.
Choose a transfer method before you switch
| Method | Does the game need explicit support? | Account or subscription requirement | Must the old device be available? | Creates a separate recoverable copy? | Main overwrite or compatibility risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform cloud sync | Yes. The title must support the service. | The relevant platform account; Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud also requires Nintendo Switch Online. | Usually yes, to make and verify the latest sync. | Not necessarily. It may synchronize one cloud state. | A conflict can present different local and cloud versions; restoring a console backup can replace the destination save. |
| Nintendo nearby-console transfer | Use the Nintendo transfer flow and check title compatibility. | The same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on both consoles; Nintendo Switch Online is not required. | Yes, both consoles must be present and near each other. | It is a device-to-device move, not an independent archive. | The destination state is governed by the transfer; both consoles need internet access. |
| Manual PC file copy | You must identify the game’s real save folder and format. | No platform subscription is inherently required. | Yes, to locate and copy the newest files. | Yes, if you retain the external copy and do not overwrite it. | The wrong folder, an open game, encryption, version differences, or cross-platform incompatibility can make the copy unusable. |
These methods are not interchangeable. A cloud icon in a storefront does not prove that every title in the library is covered, and a USB drive is not a way to back up Nintendo Switch save data.
Do this on the old device before touching the replacement
- List the games that matter. Record the platform and storefront for each title. An indie game bought on PC may use a different save system from the same game on a console.
- Launch each game once. Load the latest progress, make a normal save if the game uses manual saves, and return to its main menu. This gives the platform a current file to synchronize.
- Connect to the relevant account and network. Sign in to the storefront or console account that owns the game. Do not assume that being online automatically means synchronization has finished.
- Wait for the service to report completion. Check the game’s cloud or backup status and resolve any conflict before shutting down. If a conflict asks whether to use local or cloud data, inspect dates and playtime rather than choosing at random.
- Make an independent copy where the platform permits it. For PC, copy the game’s verified save folder to external storage. For Switch, use Nintendo’s supported cloud or console-transfer options; Nintendo does not support making a local save-data backup on the console.
- Keep the old device intact. Do not factory-reset it, uninstall the game, or overwrite its storage until the replacement has opened the expected save successfully.
Steam and other PC games: use cloud saves carefully
Check the individual game
Steam Cloud is opt-in and game-dependent. Steam says it may store save games, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but that does not mean every game uses it or that every save-related file is included. Check the game’s store information, support page, and the Steam client’s sync status for that specific title.
- On the old PC, open Steam while connected to the account that owns the game.
- Start the game, load the newest progress, save normally, and exit cleanly.
- Wait for Steam to finish syncing. Do not power off while the client is still processing a cloud update.
- On the replacement PC, install the same game, sign in to the same Steam account, and allow the first launch to complete its cloud check.
- Open the game and verify a recent save, character, world, or settings state before making new progress.
If Steam displays a local-versus-cloud conflict, stop and compare the dates or play sessions represented by each option. Choosing the wrong side can replace the copy you intended to keep. If the game has its own account or cross-progression system, follow that developer’s instructions in addition to Steam’s.

Where Steam keeps cloud files
Steam documents these default locations for Steam Cloud files:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
These paths describe Steam’s cloud-related data, not a guarantee that a particular game’s usable save is there. Many games store saves elsewhere, such as a developer-selected folder in your user profile or a game-specific directory. Confirm the exact path in the game’s official support material. Copying an arbitrary folder under userdata can produce a backup that looks plausible but cannot be restored.
Keep a second PC copy
When the game’s save location is known, close the game before copying unless the developer explicitly documents live copying. Copy the complete relevant folder, including any companion files, to a USB flash drive or other external storage. Give the backup a clear folder name that includes the game and date, and retain the original folder on the old PC.
A small USB flash drive is practical for modest save folders, but it is optional offline storage, not a transfer service. The available guidance does not establish a particular capacity, brand, reliability rating, or price. Keep at least one untouched copy until the restored game has been opened and tested.

What Steam can and cannot recover
Steam Support warns: “If any saves or other data have been lost, it is not likely that we will be able to recover them.” Treat cloud synchronization as something to verify, not as a guaranteed recovery system. Steam also notes that a game’s developer may be able to help locate and transfer files when the old machine is still available, so contact the developer before discarding that machine if the save is missing.
Manual save transfer on a Windows PC
Manual copying is useful when a game has no cloud support, when you want an independent archive, or when the developer documents a portable save folder. Microsoft’s external-storage instructions cover the general process of copying files to a drive and then to a new PC; they do not certify that every game save format is portable.
- Identify the save location. Use the game developer’s support page or in-game documentation. Do not guess based on a similarly named folder.
- Close the game and launcher. This prevents a live process from rewriting or locking the file while it is being copied.
- Copy the complete save folder. Preserve subfolders and file names. If the instructions identify several locations, copy each one.
- Keep the old folder untouched. Store the external copy separately from the replacement PC’s destination folder.
- Install the same game on the new PC. Launch it once if the developer’s instructions require it to create a destination folder, then exit.
- Replace only the documented destination files. Follow the game’s instructions for whether to merge, replace, or import. Do not overwrite unrelated saves.
- Launch and test. Open the expected profile or world, check recent progress, and make a new save. Only then should you consider the transfer complete.
Windows Backup is not an automatic game-save guarantee
Windows Backup can synchronize selected user folders through OneDrive, but that scope does not establish coverage for game saves stored in arbitrary locations. A save outside the selected folders may not be included. For a manual backup, explicitly copy the known save folder to external storage and inspect the copied files.

Save Data Cloud eligibility
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and supports most, but not all, Switch software. Eligibility is title-specific. Check the game’s eShop entry or the software menu’s Save Data Cloud option before relying on the backup.

- On the old console, open the game’s software options and inspect its Save Data Cloud status.
- Confirm the displayed backup date is newer than your last important session.
- Launch the game and save again if necessary, then return to the menu and wait for the backup to finish.
- On the replacement console, link the same Nintendo Account and install the compatible game edition.
- Inspect the cloud backup date before downloading it.
- Download only when you are certain the cloud copy is the one you want on the destination console.
- Open the game and verify the correct user, island, world, or campaign before continuing.
Downloading a cloud backup can overwrite the destination console’s existing save for that game. Nintendo says the overwritten data cannot be recovered. If the replacement console already contains newer progress, stop and decide which state must be preserved before selecting Download.
Nearby-console transfer without Nintendo Switch Online
If the old console is available, Nintendo provides a nearby-console save transfer that does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Both consoles need internet access, must be near one another, and must have the same Nintendo Account linked to a user on each console. Follow the transfer prompts on both systems and keep them powered on until the process reports completion.
This is separate from Save Data Cloud. It moves the save between consoles but is not a substitute for an independent archive, and it does not make an unsupported title transferable.

Switch and Switch 2 compatibility limits
Nintendo says cloud backup data for compatible Switch software can be shared between Switch and Switch 2 with the same Nintendo Account, subject to the game’s compatibility and edition-content rules. Check the specific title before assuming that a Switch save will work with its Switch 2 version. Nintendo also states that local save-data backups on Switch are not supported, so do not plan to connect a USB drive and copy console saves as you would on a PC.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Games on other platforms or with their own accounts
For a console, handheld, or PC storefront not covered above, use the game’s official support page as the authority for three questions:
- Does the exact edition support cloud saves or cross-progression?
- Which account must be linked, and is a subscription required?
- Where is the save stored, and can it be exported or restored?
Do not copy an unverified console directory, modify the console, or download a third-party save tool merely because a forum lists a path. A named indie game may use an unusual location, a server-side profile, or a save format that is tied to one platform. If the developer has no documented export path, preserve the old device and account rather than experimenting with the only copy.

Quick Recap
Verify the replacement before retiring the old device
- Disconnect any removable backup only after the copy or restore has completed.
- Launch the game with the intended account and confirm the profile name, latest level, inventory, world, or other unmistakable progress marker.
- Open a recent save and play long enough to confirm that it loads normally, not just that a file appears in a menu.
- Make a new save, exit, and reopen the game to verify that the replacement device can write and read the data.
- Only after this test should you erase, sell, trade in, or repurpose the old device.
Common failures and the safest response
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The game starts from the beginning on the new PC. | Cloud is unsupported, synchronization did not finish, or the save is stored outside Steam’s cloud set. | Keep the old PC, check the developer’s save path, and restore a verified manual copy if one exists. |
| Steam asks which save to use. | The local and cloud versions differ. | Compare dates and play sessions; select the version containing the intended progress, then verify after launch. |
| The copied PC folder is ignored. | The path, profile, edition, or file format is wrong, or the game was open during copying. | Consult the developer’s instructions, close the game, and repeat with the complete documented folder. |
| The Switch cloud date is old. | The latest session never backed up, the title is ineligible, or membership was unavailable. | Do not download it over newer local data. Use the old console’s current save or the nearby-console transfer when eligible. |
| The Switch destination loses its existing progress after a restore. | Cloud download replaced the destination save. | Nintendo says the overwritten data cannot be recovered; always inspect both the cloud date and destination state first. |
| The same game works on PC but not on a console. | Cross-platform save compatibility is not guaranteed. | Check the developer’s cross-progression documentation; do not assume a PC file can be imported. |
A compact checklist for moving a library
- Identify the exact platform, storefront, edition, and account for each game.
- Check title-specific cloud or transfer support.
- Launch and save on the old device while connected.
- Wait for a confirmed sync or backup and record its date.
- Copy documented PC save folders to separate external storage.
- Never use a USB drive as a Switch save-backup method.
- Resolve cloud conflicts by comparing dates, not by guessing.
- Keep the old device until the replacement save has loaded, played, saved, and reopened successfully.
- For unsupported or unclear games, ask the developer before attempting an unverified transfer.
