How to Back Up PS5 Game Saves and Reinstall Games from Your Library

PS5 saves and game installations are separate: back up saves through cloud storage or a full console backup, then reinstall owned games from Game Library.

To protect PS5 saves, sync them with PlayStation Plus cloud storage or make a full PS5 console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. To reinstall a game you own, download it from Game Library; that restores the game files, not its save. These are separate tasks, and restoring a full USB backup erases the data currently on the console.

Choose the right method: save backup or game reinstall

A game installation and its saved data are different. Deleting a game does not remove access to a purchase: Sony says you can download it again from Game Library. But downloading the game does not, by itself, restore your progress. Handle the save separately through cloud storage or a console backup.

What you want to do Use this method
Sync or transfer PS5 saves PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Copy PS4 saves to a USB drive PS4 saved-data USB copy; use an ordinary FAT or exFAT drive, not one formatted as USB extended storage
Back up broader PS5 console data Full console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive
Download a purchased game again Game Library

Sony documents cloud storage for PS5 saves and a separate USB-copy workflow for PS4 saves. A full console backup is broader than a save-only transfer, but it has important exclusions and restoring it replaces current console data. Back up PS5 saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage

Sony’s documented cloud-save workflow requires PlayStation Plus. For automatic PS5 save syncing, configure Auto-Sync Saved Data. Automatic syncing depends on internet connectivity and the console’s Rest Mode update settings when using Rest Mode.

Upload or download one game’s save manually

From Games home, highlight the game, press the Options button, then choose Upload/Download Saved Data. You can also use the relevant PS5 saved-data upload or download controls under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Check the displayed save and its date before selecting an action so you use the intended version.

PS4 saves on a PS5

PS4 cloud data is uploaded automatically when Auto-Upload is enabled, but Sony says it must be downloaded manually to the PS5 console. The setting is under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Auto-Upload. For a direct USB copy, follow the separate PS4 procedure below.

Copy PS4 saves to an ordinary USB drive

This procedure applies to PS4 saved data, not PS5 saves. Use an ordinary FAT- or exFAT-formatted USB drive; a drive formatted as USB extended storage for games is not the same thing.

Make a full PS5 console backup to USB

A full backup can include saved data, games and apps, screenshots and video clips, and settings. It includes user data saved on the console, but it does not cover everything: trophies and games or apps stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are excluded. Sony also cautions that not all USB drives work.

  1. Connect a USB storage drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Do not use a USB extended-storage game drive as the backup drive; Sony says it uses a different format and cannot store backup data.
  2. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
  3. Select the categories to include, choose Next, then choose Back Up.
  4. Wait for the completion message. Do not power off the console during backup or restore; an interruption can cause data loss, corruption, or damage.

Restore a full backup carefully

Restoring a full backup erases data currently saved on the PS5, and that erased data cannot be recovered. Make a separate copy of anything on the console that you still need before proceeding.

  1. Check the console’s system software. Sony requires the version to be the same as or newer than the version on the PS5 when the backup was made.
  2. Connect the USB drive containing the backup.
  3. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5.
  4. Choose the backup and data to restore, then confirm Restore.

The backup is linked to the PlayStation account used to create it. To restore it on another console, sign in with that same account. Sony says restoring a backup disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; enable those features again afterward if you want to use them.

Reinstall a purchased game from Game Library

  1. Open Game Library from the Games home screen.
  2. Find and select the game you want to install.
  3. Choose Download and wait for the installation to finish.
  4. If your progress is missing, handle the save separately: check cloud storage or restore the appropriate save backup.

Sony says deleting a game or application does not remove access to the purchase; it can be downloaded again from Game Library. A downloaded game is not a save restoration. Sony’s PS5 storage guidance explains the library download option.

“Reinstall system software” is not reinstalling a game

In Safe Mode, Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a console recovery option: Sony says it deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software. It is not how to download a purchased game from Game Library. Back up data before using any recovery option that can erase it. Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes this option.
