How to Back Up PS5 Save Data Before Modifying Your Console

Back up before you modify, reset, repair, or replace anything on your PS5. The safest approach is to make a complete USB console backup using Sony’s documented backup tool, then verify that your important saves are also synchronized to PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you subscribe. These are different safeguards: a USB backup can contain saved data plus other selected console content, while cloud storage is for saved data.

Do not use the PS5 data-transfer screen as a substitute for a console backup. Sony’s transfer guide says PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB through that transfer method, but Sony separately supports saved data inside a full PS5 console backup. Follow the backup path below, leave the console powered on until it confirms completion, and check the limits and exclusions before changing hardware or software.

Choose the right backup before you change the console

Your choice depends on what you need to recover and what equipment or subscription you have.

Method What it protects What you need Recovery behavior
USB PS5 console backup Selected categories including saved data, games and apps stored on the console, screenshots and video clips, and settings A compatible USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT Restoring is a console-wide operation that erases data currently on the PS5
PlayStation Plus cloud storage PS5 and PS4 saved data stored in the cloud An active PlayStation Plus membership and an internet connection Upload or download saves individually through Saved Data and Game/App Settings

A USB backup is the broader safety net if you are about to modify the system, replace its internal storage, or perform a reset. Cloud storage is a useful second copy for saves and is convenient when you move between consoles, but it is not a full image of the console. Use both where possible rather than assuming either one replaces the other.

Prepare a USB drive for the PS5 backup

Use a supported file system

Sony’s backup guide lists USB drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The guide also warns that not every USB device works with the PS5, so compatibility is not guaranteed by the connector alone. Sony does not specify a universal capacity requirement or endorse a particular make or model; check that the drive has enough free space for the categories you select.

Do not confuse backup storage with extended game storage

A USB drive configured as PS5 USB extended storage uses a different format and cannot be used in that configuration to save a console backup. If the only drive you have is set up as extended storage for games, move or reinstall that content as necessary, then reformat the drive for the backup. Reformatting erases the drive, so copy anything you need from it first.

Make the console stable before starting

  • Connect the PS5 to reliable power and avoid starting the process when an outage or forced shutdown is likely.
  • Disconnect extra USB drives if you could select the wrong one; if multiple drives remain connected, the PS5 asks you to choose the intended destination.
  • Close games and applications and allow any pending system or game activity to finish.
  • Have your PlayStation account credentials available. Backup data is linked to the account used on the console.

How to create a complete PS5 USB console backup

Use Sony’s current menu path: Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive directly to the PS5.
  2. Open Settings from the home screen.
  3. Select System, then System Software.
  4. Open Back Up and Restore and select Back Up Your PS5.
  5. If more than one USB drive is connected, select the drive you intend to use.
  6. Choose the data categories to include. Sony lists games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings as backup categories.
  7. Select Next. Add a description if you want to identify this backup later, such as the date and the hardware state before your modification.
  8. Select Back Up and wait. The PS5 restarts while it creates the backup.
  9. Remain on power and do not remove the USB drive. Wait for the completion screen, then follow the prompt to return to the home screen.

Sony’s explicit warning is: “Don’t turn off your PS5® console while backing up or restoring data.” Interrupting the operation can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console or USB drive. If the console appears idle, give it time rather than forcing a restart.

Know exactly what the USB backup includes

Categories Sony says can be backed up

  • Saved data: game progress stored on the PS5.
  • Games and apps: content stored on the console itself.
  • Screenshots and video clips: captured media selected for backup.
  • Settings: the supported PS5 settings included by the backup tool.

Sony’s guide says all user data saved on the PS5 is included in the backup data, subject to the listed storage exclusions and categories. Select every category you need before confirming; a later restore cannot recover a category you left out.

Items that are not in the console backup

  • Games and apps on USB extended storage: they are not included.
  • Games and apps on an M.2 SSD: they are not included.
  • Trophies: trophies are excluded from the backup. Sony advises updating your game status before backing up.

Installed games can usually be downloaded or reinstalled later, but that is separate from protecting your progress. If a title is on an M.2 SSD or extended-storage drive, make a separate plan for that installation and do not assume the USB console backup contains it.

Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage as a second save copy

PlayStation Plus membership is required for cloud storage. Sony documents automatic synchronization when a game is closed or the console enters rest mode, provided automatic updates and the relevant rest-mode internet setting are enabled. Automatic behavior is not proof that your latest session uploaded, so check the save manually before modifying the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable the conditions for automatic synchronization

  1. Ensure the PS5 is connected to the internet.
  2. Keep automatic updates enabled.
  3. Enable the rest-mode setting that keeps the PS5 connected to the internet.
  4. Close the game normally or put the console into rest mode and allow synchronization to finish.

The exact automatic-sync controls can vary with account and system settings. If you are preparing for a modification, use the manual upload screen as the final confirmation instead of relying only on a previous rest-mode session.

Manually upload PS5 saves

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  3. Choose Saved Data (PS5).
  4. Open the upload control for cloud storage and select the games or saves you want to upload.
  5. Wait until the upload reports completion before shutting down or disconnecting the console.

Download a save after the change

On the repaired or modified system, return to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5), choose the download control, and select the cloud save to restore. Download only after confirming that the cloud copy is newer or otherwise the version you intend to use; downloading can overwrite the local state for that game.

Cloud-storage limits

Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page currently lists 100 GB of PS5 saved data, 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. The page does not state a publication year for those figures, so treat them as the service limits shown on the current page and verify them again if your backup is unusually large: PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 consoles.

Cloud storage is for saved data. Do not describe it as a copy of screenshots, video clips, settings, trophies, or every other user file unless you have another specific backup for those items.

  • Confirm that the USB process reached its completion screen and that the drive remains readable when connected to the PS5.
  • Record the backup description and date so you can distinguish it from older copies.
  • Open the cloud-save screen and confirm that each important game shows a recent upload or synchronization time.
  • Check the games you actually played most recently; a cloud copy from an earlier session may be valid but incomplete for your needs.
  • Confirm that your screenshots, clips, settings, and locally installed content are covered by the USB category selections if you need them.
  • Remember that trophies are not in the USB backup. Update game status while signed in to PlayStation Network so trophy progress has the best chance of being recorded by the service.

For especially valuable saves, keep the USB drive disconnected from the console after the backup completes. That reduces the chance of accidentally reformatting or overwriting it during later troubleshooting.

What restoring a USB backup does

Restoration is not a small “pick one save” operation. Sony warns that restoring a PS5 from a backup erases all data currently saved on the console, and erased data cannot be restored. Use the restore function only when you have decided that the backup should replace the current console state.

Restore path

  1. Connect the USB drive containing the backup.
  2. Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
  3. Select Restore Your PS5.
  4. Choose the drive and backup data.
  5. Read the deletion warning and confirm only if you intend to replace the current console data.
  6. Leave the console powered on and connected to the drive until the process finishes.

The system software on the destination PS5 must be the same version or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. Sony’s wording is: “When restoring your PS5 console from a backup, the current system software version must be the same version or newer than the version on the PS5 console when the backup was made.” Update the destination console first if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account and console restrictions

Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account. If you have never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony says the backup can be restored only to the same console. A restore also disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; re-enable that feature afterward if you use the PS5 for offline access or share games with other users on the console.

Do not mistake data transfer for backup

Sony’s PS4/PS5 data-transfer guide says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 console to a USB drive using the transfer method described there. That statement concerns the transfer workflow, not the separate full-console backup tool.

The distinction is practical:

  • Transfer: moves supported data between consoles through Sony’s transfer process.
  • Console backup: packages selected PS5 data, including saved data, on a compatible USB drive for later restoration.

Do not generalize the PS4 save-transfer instructions to PS5 game saves. Follow the PS5 backup path in this guide when your objective is a recoverable copy before modification.

Troubleshoot common backup problems

The PS5 does not recognize the drive

  • Confirm that the drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
  • Check that it is not still configured as PS5 USB extended storage.
  • Disconnect other USB drives and try again.
  • Try another compatible device if the first one still fails; Sony cautions that not every USB device works.

The backup stops or appears frozen

Do not power off immediately. A large selection of games, clips, and other user data can take time. If the console displays an error, note it, restart only after the system permits it, and retry with the drive directly connected. If repeated attempts fail, make the cloud upload of critical saves before any modification and preserve the original drive and console state for further support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is not enough space

Reduce the selected categories only if you have deliberately decided what can be recovered another way. For example, you might exclude reinstallable games while retaining saved data, settings, and captures, but remember that content on M.2 or extended storage is already outside the backup. A larger compatible drive may be required; Sony does not publish one universal capacity recommendation in the backup guide.

A restored save is older than expected

Check whether the latest play session reached cloud storage and whether you selected the intended USB backup description. Automatic cloud synchronization depends on the internet and rest-mode settings, so an earlier upload may be the newest available copy. Avoid downloading an older cloud save over a newer local save until you have identified which version you want.

Pre-modification checklist

  1. Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the saves.
  2. Update game status and allow trophy information to synchronize; trophies are not part of the USB backup.
  3. Prepare a compatible FAT32 or exFAT USB drive that is not being used as extended game storage.
  4. Create the USB backup through Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
  5. Select every category you need and wait for the completion screen.
  6. Manually upload important saves through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) if you have PlayStation Plus.
  7. Check the cloud upload time and the USB backup description.
  8. Keep the USB backup safe and disconnected while you perform the modification.
  9. If restoration becomes necessary, remember that it erases current console data, requires the same or newer system software version, and may require you to re-enable Console Sharing and Offline Play.
