Back up an ANBERNIC handheld in two layers: copy the game files and save data to a separate destination, then preserve any firmware-specific settings or identity archive you may need. There is no universal ANBERNIC save folder. The correct path depends on the exact model, operating system, firmware build, emulator and RetroArch core. Identify those first, exit the game cleanly, and verify a copied save before formatting, reflashing or changing cards.
What you need to know before copying anything
ANBERNIC devices are a hardware family rather than one software platform. A handheld may use stock firmware, a Linux distribution such as KNULLI, muOS, ROCKNIX or AmberELEC, RetroArch cores, standalone emulators, or a mixture of them. Each combination can place games, ordinary in-game saves and save states in different directories. A path that works on one RG35XX Pro installation is not evidence that it works on another model.

There are also two fundamentally different kinds of progress:
- Normal in-game saves are written by the game, as they were on the original console. They are usually the most portable form of progress when the same game and emulator can read them.
- Save states are snapshots created by an emulator. They depend on the emulator, core, settings and sometimes the exact game image. A state that loads on one installation may fail after a core or firmware change.
If both matter to you, copy both. Do not treat a save-state folder as a replacement for the game’s ordinary save file.

The safest general backup workflow
Use this sequence before replacing a card, reflashing firmware, moving to another handheld or making a large software change.
- Identify the installation. Write down the exact handheld model, operating system or firmware, and whether the title runs through RetroArch or a standalone emulator. Also note the RetroArch core if applicable.
- Finish saving in the game. Use the game’s own save command and wait for its confirmation. If you use a save state, create one after the ordinary save as well.
- Exit cleanly. Close the content and return to the emulator or RetroArch main menu before shutting down. This is particularly important for RetroArch Cloud Sync, which may not upload the latest data while a game is still running.
- Choose a copy method. Use the device’s file browser or network transfer if your firmware provides one, or remove the microSD card and connect it to a computer with a compatible USB card reader. Select a reader that matches the computer’s available port; USB-C and USB-A computers may require different adapters.
- Copy the complete material you need. Include ROMs or other game files, ordinary save files, save states, screenshots you want to keep, and any configuration or BIOS files required by your setup. If you are preparing for a reflash, copy the entire games or ROM partition rather than only a few visible folders.
- Keep the source untouched. Do not format or overwrite the original card until the copy has completed and you have checked that the expected files are present.
- Test a restoration. On the original handheld or a spare card, place one copied game and its save in the corresponding location, launch it with the same emulator or core and confirm that the save appears. Test a state separately if you intend to rely on it.
- Make a second copy before destructive work. A computer copy plus an untouched original card gives you a recovery path if the first copy is incomplete. A spare microSD card can be another destination when its capacity and format are supported by your device and reader.
Where saves usually live: why the model and firmware matter
Do not search for one folder called “saves” and assume it contains everything. RetroArch has separate save-file and save-state locations, while standalone emulators may use their own directories. Firmware can also move those locations between internal storage and a removable games partition.
The following paths are documented examples for an RG35XX Pro setup. They are not universal ANBERNIC paths, and firmware updates or customized directory settings can change them.
| RG35XX Pro software | Data type | Example path |
|---|---|---|
| Stock firmware, standalone emulator | Save files | mnt/mmc/save |
| Stock firmware, RetroArch | Save files | mnt/mmc/saves_RA |
| Stock firmware, RetroArch | Save states | mnt/mmc/states_RA |
| KNULLI | Save files | userdata/saves/[console] |
| muOS | Save files | MUOS/save/file/[core] |
| muOS | Save states | MUOS/save/state/[core] |
| ROCKNIX | Save files | /storage/roms/saves/ |
| ROCKNIX | Save states | /storage/roms/savestates |
Here, [console] and [core] represent the actual console or core directory on that installation; they are not literal folder names. Use the installed software’s documentation or its directory settings to confirm the destination. If you cannot find a file, search by the game’s filename and inspect the emulator’s configured save and state directories rather than moving random folders.

RetroArch: back up ordinary saves and states separately
RetroArch can keep ordinary battery-save files and save states in different directories. In RetroArch’s settings, inspect the save-file and save-state directory values and record them before copying. A core may also use a particular filename extension, such as an SRAM-style file, tied to the ROM name.
What to copy
- The ordinary save file for each game, commonly stored beside other core saves.
- The save-state files and any state-index metadata used by your configuration.
- The ROM or game file itself, because the state may expect the same filename and content.
- BIOS files and core configuration when the game requires them.
Keep the original filename and extension. Renaming a ROM without also matching the save filename can make the emulator appear to have lost progress. When moving to another device, use the same core and compatible settings first; only then investigate a core change.
AmberELEC hotkeys are an example, not a standard
AmberELEC’s getting-started documentation describes SELECT + R1 to save a state and SELECT + L1 to load one in its documented setup. Those combinations should not be presented as universal ANBERNIC controls. Another firmware, model or custom hotkey profile may use different buttons. Use the hotkey list shown by your installed firmware.

Backing up an AmberELEC card before a reflash
AmberELEC separates an identity backup from a games backup. Its Backup Identity function preserves EmulationStation settings, network details and core configurations, creating identity.tar.gz under /storage/roms/backup. That archive is useful for restoring settings, but it is not a complete copy of your games, saves or states.

Before reformatting an AmberELEC card:
- Run the system’s Backup Identity function and confirm that
/storage/roms/backup/identity.tar.gzexists. - Connect the card to a computer with a compatible reader.
- Copy the Games partition, including game files, saves and states, to a separate folder. Preserve the partition’s directory structure.
- Keep both the identity archive and the Games-partition copy in a safe location.
- Reflash or reformat only after checking that the computer copy opens and contains the expected folders.
- Boot the newly prepared card, then restore the Games partition as directed by the AmberELEC procedure.
- Restore identity settings only when the new installation is the same AmberELEC environment for which the archive was created.
Other operating systems need their own documented backup and restore sequence. Do not assume an AmberELEC identity archive can restore settings on stock firmware or a different Linux distribution.
Using a computer and card reader for a manual copy
A removable-card copy is usually the simplest, most transparent backup. Shut the handheld down rather than pulling a card while it is writing. Insert the card into a reader, wait for every partition to mount, and copy the relevant folders to a clearly named directory such as ANBERNIC-RG35XXPro-2026-10-13.
Some operating systems expose only one partition automatically. If your games or saves are on a second partition, use the firmware’s documented mounting method or a computer that can read that filesystem. Never initialize or “repair” a partition just because the desktop asks; an automatic repair can alter the only copy of your data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter copying, compare folder sizes and open several filenames. The strongest check is practical: put one game and its ordinary save on a test card, launch it with the original emulator or core, and load the save. If the save works, eject the card safely before removing it.

Cloud synchronization: convenient, but not a substitute for a first backup
RetroArch Cloud Sync can synchronize save files and save states through supported backends, including WebDAV, iCloud and iCloud Drive. Availability varies by platform and backend. It is a synchronization system, not a universal ANBERNIC feature, so your firmware must include a compatible RetroArch build and network configuration.
Prepare both devices consistently
- Use matching save-file and save-state directory organization.
- Use the same game filenames and, where possible, the same core and core version.
- Configure one device completely before adding another.
- Close the game and return to RetroArch’s main menu before quitting so the latest save can be uploaded.
RetroArch warns that mismatched sorting or directory settings can prevent correct merging. If two devices change the same file before either has finished syncing, the changes can conflict. Conflicts are logged rather than silently overwritten. With Destructive Cloud Sync disabled, files that would otherwise be deleted or overwritten are backed up locally, which provides an additional recovery option.
Avoid the most common sync mistake
Do not start a game on two devices, save on both and then expect the cloud to decide which progress is correct. Finish on one device, return to the menu, wait for synchronization, and only then open the game on the other. Keep a manual computer copy before enabling synchronization for the first time.
AmberELEC’s rclone option
AmberELEC separately documents an rclone-based tool for backing up and restoring saves, states, screenshots and device backups. Initial cloud authorization is performed on a computer, and the documentation describes the setup as intermediate to advanced. This option is specific to the AmberELEC workflow; it is not evidence that every ANBERNIC model has built-in cloud backup.

Use rclone only after you understand which local folders it will copy and where a restore will place them. A successful cloud login does not guarantee that the right partition or emulator directory is included.
What to do when a game will not save
First determine whether the failure affects the game’s normal save, the emulator’s save state or both. Confirm that the card is not full, that the game partition is writable and that the handheld was not powered off during a write. Try saving in the game, exit normally, and check whether a new or modified save file appears.
RG552 instant archive instruction
ANBERNIC’s RG552 support article gives a model-specific workaround for a saving failure: it says that when the emulator’s own archive method fails, the user should use instant archive, and it assigns F + R1 to that operation. This instruction applies to the RG552 article. It does not establish the same shortcut for an RG35XX, RG353, RG556 or any other model. Owners of another handheld should consult that model’s manual or support page instead of trying the RG552 combination.

- Check that the save filename matches the game filename exactly, including extension and capitalization where the filesystem is case-sensitive.
- Confirm that you placed it in the directory used by the active emulator or core, not a similarly named directory for another system.
- Launch the same core that created the file before testing a different one.
- Verify that the game image is the same revision or region when the emulator expects matching content.
- Keep the copied file unchanged and test a duplicate so troubleshooting cannot damage your only backup.
Moving saves to another card or handheld
Start with ordinary in-game saves because they are generally less dependent on emulator memory state. Copy the game file and save into the destination’s documented directories, launch the same emulator or core, and verify the save in-game. Treat save states as conditional: they can depend on core version, emulator settings, memory layout and the exact game file. The available documentation does not establish cross-core compatibility, so never delete the ordinary save merely because a state file copied successfully.
When moving between firmware families, recreate the directory structure expected by the destination rather than copying an entire source partition blindly. For example, an RG35XX Pro state in MUOS/save/state/[core] will not automatically become usable simply because it was placed in a ROCKNIX installation’s /storage/roms/savestates; the destination still needs the matching game, core and filename conventions.
Backup options compared
| Method | Scope | Setup effort | Main risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual card-to-computer copy | Games, saves, states and selected settings | Low; requires a compatible reader | Incomplete copy or accidental overwrite if not verified | Before reflashing, formatting or changing cards |
| Identity/settings archive | Firmware settings, network details and core configuration in the documented AmberELEC case | Low on AmberELEC | Not a games or saves backup | Restoring an AmberELEC environment |
| RetroArch Cloud Sync | RetroArch save files and states | Moderate; backend and matching directories required | Conflicts, incorrect merges or sync skipped while content is open | Keeping multiple compatible devices current |
| AmberELEC rclone workflow | AmberELEC saves, states, screenshots and device backup | Intermediate to advanced; computer authorization required | Wrong source or restore path | Automated or remote AmberELEC backups |
| Second microSD copy | Whatever you copy to it | Moderate; requires supported card and reader | Both copies can be lost if stored together | Offline fallback before risky changes |
A practical pre-reflash checklist
- Model, firmware and emulator/core identified.
- Game saves completed and the game exited normally.
- Ordinary saves copied.
- Save states copied separately.
- Game files and required BIOS/configuration copied.
- AmberELEC identity archive created, if applicable.
- Games partition copied separately, if applicable.
- At least one copy stored away from the original card.
- One copied game and ordinary save tested successfully.
- Original card left unchanged until the test passes.
Bottom line for ANBERNIC owners
The dependable method is deliberately unglamorous: identify your exact software, exit cleanly, copy the games and both kinds of saves with a card reader or verified file transfer, and test a restore before formatting anything. Add an identity archive for firmware that supports one, and use cloud synchronization only after directory settings, cores and conflict behavior are understood. Because paths and shortcuts are model-specific, treat every example as a documented starting point for that installation—not as a universal ANBERNIC rule.
